2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

So, we're playing Fredo(OH) next year. Looks like they'll be catching the worst Ohio State team since Randy Ayers imploded the program in the 90s. If they pull off an upset, the one single lining will be that it will absolutely melt the juggalos' minds.

I agree with you (and the stats) about Thompson. I even saw some leadership characteristics from him. He obviously wants to win. I was speaking about actual wins/losses contrasted with talent. He has talent. He has potential. I would even say we could expect a senior-year Terrence Dials type of performance out of him, but I'm just not ready to ascribe any leaps to him just yet.
sure, but that's kind of a far cry from "I just don't think he makes us that much better either way." i get that it doesn't feel like any player made the 17-15 buckeyes "that much better." however, i sure as heck think that if thompson hadn't played last year, the team would have been far worse.

I'm done projecting what they can be. I'm going to wait and see with all of them, Thompson included.
this is why i like per-possession, tempo-free stats. it's easier to forecast progress when the player has already proven to be highly efficient for the minutes he's played. no other ohio state player was remotely as efficient as thompson was. trevor doesn't need to improve in the areas that define the role of a center: shooting percentage, rebounding percentage, block percentage, offensive rating, and defensive rating. he just needs to play more. that is, he just needs to foul less.

so basically for:

2017 we are looking at 2 possible Grad Transfers (James Daniel and Cam Johnson) and 1 2017 recruit (mark Smith)

and

2018 we are looking at 1 regular transfer (Carlton Bragg)

I read that Bragg supposedly has a top 5, and that there isnt a mutual interest between him and OSU... supposedly.

If Matta some how pulls a rabbit out of the hat and closes with Smith and Johnson, that could be a life saver for him. Throw in Daniel for the one year.

Add Smith, Johnson, K Wesson, Beverly and Funderburk to the core there now, it's certainly a NCAA team.

TT's tOSU career is over. He signed with an agent.

As odd as it sounds, that might be a blessing in disguise for the long term health of the program. Now they have to depend on a pair of freshmen (one redshirt) for any kind of inside presence. TT probably made them a bubble tourney team next year. Without him, I don't see much improvement on last season. If they snuck into the tourney, IMO that prompts Smith to retain Matta again. Long term, I don't think that's what's best for the on court product.

I feel for Thad....he's Steve Kerr without the professional net underneath him. He's the easiest target alive amongst competition and his recent results aren't great.....so do the math.

At least in the NBA, your talent is your talent. In college basketball, recruiting is massive. Thad just can't recruit like he used to....part of that is health and a lot of that is results.....

This will not end well...and I'm still a bit bitter our head coach is now at Indiana.

@billmac91 - I agree, although I wouldn't leave out his staff selections which contribute to the recruiting woes.
I think has staff selections have torpedoed the on court product, which has led to the lousy recruiting. But, yeah, ultimately his staff selections have been very poor since about 2011-12. Sure as shit isn't anybody beating down the door to hire away Dickerson and Paulus. That and I think him losing some of his vigor because of his health has landed us where we are.
