"Who?" - most recruits

He'll be 60 next year, has no head coaching experience*, and isn't a name recognizable to fans outside of Buckeyenation. I respect what he's done as a Buckeye, but he's not the man for this job at this time.


* was interim coach of the Knicks in 2004-5 (17-27 record).

Well, I gotta think Sean Miller is a bit "pie in the sky."

Shaka has come down to earth in Austin. He's been pretty bad there.

I've never been overly impressed with Cronin. He seems like a decent enough coach, but I don't see him as a guy that can lead a major program.

I like Mack, but I don't think his ceiling is as high as Matta's was when he left Xavier.

Buzz Williams is a helluva coach and an interesting name.

Holtmann might be my favorite on that list. Good coach, would love to have him, but is tOSU really an upgrade at this point? Maybe if he's holding out for a big Midwest job, but it doesn't look like any of the other heartland majors are opening up anytime soon with IU now filled.

"The Mayor" would be an interesting option. Good coach, but I'm not sure how he'd operate here. His success was built on a lot of "questionable" and "second chance" kids in Aames.

The timing is odd/frustrating to say the least. Frustrating in that if they were more decisive, maybe we have Archie right now, though I'm not 100% sold he comes here over IU. Would have been a tough pill to swallow if he straight up picked IU over us. It does finally give me some optimism for the first time in years about this program. Hope springs eternal and all that. Maybe I didn't see it, but are they looking to fill the position before the season? I would think they would want to, but they could always go the interim route to allow more time. I've said for a while that I'm not sure how attractive the tOSU job is right now. Lotta powers in the area to go up against, Maybe THE football school in the country, luke warm fan support. BUT, we do have a ton of resources, and Matta proved it can be done here...even if his success was really in a different time than now.

Anybody mentioning Donovan and/or Stevens needs to check their delusion at the door.

Should be a very interesting few weeks.

Article mirrors Thamel's tweet, but adds Gregg Marshall.

Marshall would be the homerun, IMO; but he has things pretty cozy in Wichita right now...

At the risk of being repetitive here, the timing is awful for Marshall. He returns a preseason top-10 team that’s poised to debut in the American Athletic Conference. There are few better pure coaches in the country. But Marshall is drastically different than Matta, as he relishes the spotlight and attention nearly as much as Matta shunned it. Hard to imagine someone like that thriving in the shadow of Big Football at Ohio State. His hiring would certainly make a splash.

Yep. That's why the timing is so frustrating. Why wait 3 months? Poor planning, and if they don't land a good/great coach, somebody gonna have a lot of 'splainin' to do. My only real hope is that they will have the $$$ to throw around to open some eyes and overcome the stupid timing.

If this is a case of Matta being suggestively forced out, which it definitely seems like, they better know something we don't and have a plan already in the works. There definitely would be no excuse for not letting him go months ago if they were going to push him out anyways.

POTENTIAL REPLACEMENTS FOR THAD MATTA AS OHIO STATE'S NEXT HEAD COACH

For the first time in 13 years, Ohio State needs a new head basketball coach.

Athletic director Gene Smith announced Monday that Thad Matta was out and that a national search would begin immediately. Matta was the winningest coach in school history, so this is no small task.

Of course, the timing of the change is less than ideal. Smith said there weren't any plans for any of the Buckeyes' current assistants to take on an interim role this season, so Ohio State fully intends to hire another coach from a different program.

Here are some potential options for Smith:

CHRIS MACK — XAVIER
An obvious name since he coaches at a school right down the road — at the same one Ohio State hired Matta from — but there's many out there who believe Mack is a Xavier lifer. He is an alum, after all.

Mack has been the head coach of the Musketeers since 2009-10 and has a career coaching record of 187-91 (.673). He's led Xavier to the NCAA tournament seven times in eight seasons and been to the Sweet 16 four times with an Elite Eight appearance coming this past season.

CHRIS HOLTMANN — BUTLER
Another hot young coach from one of Matta's former employers, Holtmann is another option for Ohio State. He's been the head coach of the Bulldogs for the last three seasons after three years at Gardner-Webb.

Holtmann has compiled a 70-31 mark in three years at Butler and has been to the NCAA tournament in all three seasons.

MICK CRONIN — CINCINNATI
Another longtime head coach at an Ohio school, Cronin just finished his 11th season as the head coach at Cincinnati. The Bearcats have been to the NCAA tournament each of the last seven seasons but have only advanced past the first weekend once in that stretch.

Cronin is 237–135 (.637) in his 11 years at Cincinnati.

SEAN MILLER — ARIZONA
A former Matta disciple who has coaching experience at Ohio State, Miller is one of the top coaches in the profession. The big question here, obviously, is whether or not he'd want to leave Arizona, which is widely considered a better job than Ohio State.

Anything is possible, I guess. I bet Miller would answer Ohio State's phone call, though.

GREGG MARSHALL — WICHITA STATE
His name comes up for just about every coaching vacancy in the country so why not just include it here. Fact is, Marshall makes roughly the same amount of money that Matta did at Ohio State, so it's hard to envision him leaving his current situation.

TOM CREAN — FORMER INDIANA HEAD COACH
The only coach on this list not currently employed is Crean. Maybe he gets a phone call considering the wild timing of Matta's departure.

A lot of what Hoiberg did as far transfers and character was because recruiting at Ames was tough. Easier to build a program that way there than relying on 4 year guys. At Ohio State he might have a chance to build a program the more conventional way.

That reminds me a lot of our old pal, DickRod. We all said he'd struggle at a bigger program when he couldn't rely heavily on "questionable" recruits. We all know how that turned out. Not saying Hoiberg would bring the same results, but it's a big question mark.
