2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

Why in the fuck would we schedule an in-state game when our program is a burning turd wrapped in a diaper of tears? Holtman better have this program unfucked before this rolls around.
Why not? I would rather see us play Ohio schools including the aforementioned ones and the rest of the MAC schools rather than directional Texas or directional NC schools. I think it would help attendance and general interest. I`m good with Butler and Marquette and other regional schools that are decent as well. Step it up in scheduling IMHO.

Scheduling announcement for 2018-19 and 2019-20. Holtmann promised better non-conference games. This was a great place to start.

OHIO STATE COACH CHRIS HOLTMANN CREDITS FAN EXCITEMENT, GENE SMITH AS MAIN REASONS FOR FUTURE SERIES WITH CINCINNATI

http://youtu.be/N1KyFyvCy9U

It's no secret that Thad Matta avoided playing in-state opponents in non-conference games, especially those that could be a threat.

Before even coaching his first game in Columbus, Chris Holtmann is already taking a different approach, as it was announced Tuesday that the Buckeyes have scheduled a home-and-home with Cincinnati, starting with the season opener in 2018-19.

Holtmann, speaking for the first time since Ohio State opened full practice for the 2017-18 season, said the main factors for going ahead with the two-game series were Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith and desire from the fan base.

"I give Gene Smith a lot of credit, because I think he was certainly behind this idea of playing this and supporting a series like this. I think he deserves a lot of credit," Holtmann said. "I had to sign off on it. He wasn't going to tell me, 'You have to play it,' or maybe he was. Certainly we both had to be in agreement on that.

"Not only that, but there is no question the thirst from our fans has been – and I don't know that I really understood that until I had spent a few weeks to a few months here," Holtmann continued. "From a distance, I didn't understand the thirst for that from our fans. I think it was an education for me a little bit. The fact that they are a high-level program, a quality program makes even more sense."

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Big Ten announced on Thursday that it will expand the men's basketball conference schedule to 20 games beginning in the 2018-19 season.

The Big Ten women will play 18 games beginning next season.

Currently the men play 18 games, and the women play 16.

What does that mean for Ohio State? The Buckeyes will have fewer opportunities to add the marquee non-conference games new coach Chris Holtmann is hoping to add to future schedules.

Twenty Big Ten games means just 11 games in the non-conference slate. Ohio State is locked in to play in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge every year. It will play in the Gavitt Tip-Off Games against a Big East opponent in three of the next six seasons. And the Buckeyes will play in the neutral site CBS Sports Classic with North Carolina, UCLA and Kentucky through the 2019-20 season.

Holtmann knew this was a possibility when he took the job, which is why he's tried to temper expectations some when discussing his plans for future schedules. Ohio State is already locked into some future non-conference matchups, set before Holtmann was hired. Those aren't public yet, but if they were against major opponents, we would know.

Holtmann has added a home-and-home with Cincinnati to open the 2018-19, and 2019-20 seasons.

What this could really effect, at least until future game contracts are off the books, is Holtmann's desire to get the Buckeyes into one of the early-season tournaments. For instance, if Ohio State wanted to play in the Maui Invitational (three games), the ACC Challenge, the Gavitt Games and the CBS Sports Classic in the same year, that would leave four non-conference games to fill and make it more difficult to get a marquee game on Ohio State's home floor -- which is a major consideration in all of this.

I do not mind the Big Ten going to a 20 game schedule because it will at least guarantee us some quality games even though a couple of them will not be at home. We will not have to worry so much about playing a cupcake schedule early in the season. It will strengthen our schedule which will be beneficial when it comes to Selection Sunday.

Men’s basketball: Ohio State players offer NBA comparisons for themselves

IMG_4056-530x350.jpg

Coming off a disappointing 2016-2017 season, a coaching change and considerable roster turnover, it is fair to say there is uncertainty surrounding the Ohio State men’s basketball team. When asked to compare themselves to NBA players, the Buckeyes answered candidly, giving fans a better sense of what to expect from the roster.

Senior forward Jae’Sean Tate, redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop and sophomore forward/center Micah Potter quickly referenced NBA champions and All-Stars when asked for their comparisons.

Micah Potter

“[Cleveland Cavaliers forward] Kevin Love,” Potter responded without hesitation.

“I’m a big white guy that can shoot and I like to rebound,” Potter said. “I think that’s pretty self-explanatory.”

Potter added that he has the capability to throw full-court outlet passes like the ones Love has patented in his career. He said he will have to prove his ability in practice before throwing the long passes in a game, but he is confident in the athletic abilities of his teammates to run the floor, catch the ball and convert the exciting play.

Jae’Sean Tate

Although the big man from Cleveland proudly compared himself to a champion and four-time All-Star in Love, Tate reluctantly compared himself to a two-time NBA champion and All-Star.

“Everybody’s gonna say [Golden State Warriors forward] Draymond Green,” Tate said. “I mean, that’s an honor. It’s a great compliment, so I guess I got to go with him.”

The comparison to Green stems from the fact both he and Tate are undersized forwards whose versatility allows them to defend multiple positions and make plays all over the floor. Potter agreed wholeheartedly when asked about Tate’s comparison to Green, who earned 2017 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

“That one is 100 percent true,” Potter said.

Tate said he knows that comparison has accuracy, but prefers to think of himself otherwise.

“I would rather be a [Cleveland Cavaliers guard] Dwyane Wade, but I know I’m not there,” Tate said while flashing a smile.

Tate said he has been working on his jump shot and ball handling, but knows he has a long way to go to resemble Wade, a 12-time All-Star and three-time champion who many regard as one of the best to ever play.

Looks like Bill is using some fuzzy math. Teams are getting 12, 13, 14 nonconference games now. I believe Maui counts as one game. Add three other single game events, that makes 4. So you could have those 4 and have around 6-8 other OOC games to schedule even with the reduction. I could be wrong, but I am assuming the B1G will be smart enough to not schedule league games either in November or around holidays which is when most of the tourneys are played.

Considering every other program in the B1G has played in more multi-game neutral site nonconference tourneys than OSU over the last 7 years, creating excuses for OSU continuing to not play in them regularly with a new, healthy coach is asinine. The majority of the B1G plays in these tourneys almost every year. Pretty crap column by Bill altogether, I would say.

Wonder if anything will leak reguarding the xavier scrimmage?

OHIO STATE BASKETBALL DEFEATS XAVIER IN CLOSED SCRIMMAGE, PER REPORT

The Chris Holtmann era hasn't seen its first game yet, but behind closed doors, Ohio State is already off to a good start.

The Buckeyes made a trip to Cincinnati on Sunday to play a closed scrimmage against Xavier – a projected top-20 team – and came away with a victory, according to ESPN's Jeff Goodman.
