2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
College football bowl prediction season is always fun. With the start of the regular season nearing, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm made his projections.

Palm came up with matchups for all bowl games. In the College Football Playoff, Palm predicted Alabama and Florida State would meet in one semifinal, Ohio State and Southern Cal in the other.

Palm is big on the Big Ten. He projected Penn State would meet defending national champion Clemson in the Orange Bowl and Wisconsin would face Washington in the Fiesta Bowl. The Badgers’ potential foe reached the CFP a season ago.

Big Ten bowl predictions
  • Ohio State: Rose Bowl (CFP semifinal) vs. Southern Cal
  • Wisconsin: Fiesta Bowl vs. Washington
  • Penn State: Orange Bowl vs. Clemson
  • Nebraska: Outback Bowl vs. Georgia
  • Northwestern: Music City Bowl vs. Kentucky
  • Michigan: Holiday Bowl vs. Oregon
  • Iowa: Pinstripe Bowl vs. Notre Dame
  • Minnesota: Foster Farms Bowl vs. UCLA
  • Indiana: Quick Lane Bowl vs. Old Dominion
  • Michigan State: Armed Forces Bowl vs. Army

Interesting that they have Army (one of Ohio State's opponents this year) as a "bowl caliber" team.

Man, I'd hate to play USC in the Rose Bowl in a semi-final. That program is fucking kryptonite to Ohio State. If we get to pick, I know that the administration and B1G will push us that way out of stupid tradition, but I'd love to have USC in the other bracket and hopefully get taken out before the championship game. First preference is that they're over-hyped and don't get in at all.

The Sporting News has the same 4 teams; but different match ups (i.e. with Ohio State getting beat by Alabama in the Sugar Bowl):

FOX Sports’ Colin Cowherd says Ohio State will win the 2018 national championship

A big reason Cowherd said Ohio State will win it all next year is the talent they have on their defense. Specifically, the Buckeyes’ defensive line.

“Greg Schiano called the current Ohio State defensive line the ‘most talented’ he’s coached,” Cowherd said on The Herd. “This is actually one of the reasons I chose Ohio State to win the national championship this year.”

Cowherd then sized up Ohio State against the three other teams he believes are among the best in the nation. The biggest difference between the Buckeyes and his other top teams is Ohio State’s strength trumps the other team’s weaknesses.

“The four best teams in my opinion are Alabama, USC, Florida State and Ohio State,” Cowherd said on The Herd. “The strength of Ohio State is their defensive line. The weakness of USC, Florida State and Alabama is their offensive lines. So, I think Ohio State would beat USC, Florida State and Alabama head-to-head.”

FIVETHIRTYEIGHT'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREDICTION MODEL REALLY LIKES OHIO STATE'S CHANCES TO MAKE THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF SHOULD THEY WIN OUT

87273_h.jpg

Should Ohio State win out, they're a virtual lock to make the College Football Playoff, with their chances jumping to 97% in the FiveThirtyEight model. Things look great for Ohio State under various permutations of other teams also winning out with the exception of Oklahoma, where the model sees OSU's chance to make the CFP fall to 91%.

If the domers beat Miami and win out, they'll get the unofficial ACC spot. Unless the committee really wants to stand up to the press and espn and make a "join the damned conference" statement to ND, it's going to happen.

Assuming no upsets, it's going to go down like this.

Bama-UGA winner
Ohio State-Wiscy winner
Domers
Okie

PAC is getting left out, and Clemson needs either Miami to beat the domers or OU & Washington to get a second loss.

Ain't nobody in the tv industry that isn't hoping ND gets in and since tv foots the bill for most of CFB there'll be no push to force them into a conference.
