Game Thread 2017 Cotton Bowl: OSU vs. USC - 12/29/17 @ 8:30 ET (ESPN)

Yeah how dare I have high hopes for a program with the 2nd best coach in NCAAF, top 5 recruiting every year, and NFL talent littered across the board... to be in the top 4 teams at years end. Especially when your QB has been around for so long and yet got worse.

I am proud of the team for beating Michigan and winning the conference no question, but for a team that had all the talent in the world to be a top 4 team, not being so is slightly disappointing. If that makes me entitled then sign me up.

The minute you stop having high hopes and being slightly disappointed for not at least having games to win a title is the minute you become a fan of a non-elite program.
You would have loved the 90s. . .

I recall 97 onward well so I have experienced it somewhat.

Not really sure why any other time period matters though. My hopes and aspirations are for this OSU players and staff. There is a difference between being irate anytime my team doesn't make the playoffs, and being slightly disappointed. I am still very proud of this group of players. I just know that if we could have put it all together we would have easily been a top 4 team, such is football though.

Friend of mine, she is from and lives in Bakersfield. HUGE SC and Bolts fan. This is how the texts just went -

Me: Cotton Bowl. It's on.
Her: I hope Darnold stays one more year.
Me: Can't blame him, who would 'want' to come to Cleveland?
Her: LOL At least Bosa is playing for the good guys now but I'm sure he'll be on your sideline cheering.
Me: Oh don't worry about that, we'll have another one of those on the field too.

Haven't heard back since...
Little does darnold know but Cleveland will have the number one pick in 2019 as well.

I think there are only a handful of coaches that can put The Ohio State Buckeyes in position to be playing for the national championship, less than a dozen, I know this. I am 100% certain that UFM is one of those special few coaches and we are damn fortunate to have him. I also know this. I know that in that state up north they're paying MORE than what Ohio State is paying and they have not come close to where this program is, not even close. I've been a fan since Woody was coaching, yeah I'm old, and I can say this much, I am not upset at all that we're not playing for the championship, it's just not our year. I am happy as hell we beat Wisconsin because they would have been an embarrassment to the B10 and we would have had to hear that crap the rest of the year. I look forward to the Cotton Bowl, I hope like hell our Buckeyes beat USC. I look forward to the Buckeyes learning from this year, improving, getting better, stronger and beating that team up north. . .AGAIN!

GO BUCKS!!!

It's one thing to have high hopes. It's another to come off as though you're owed something. 99% of college football fans would kill for the last six seasons we've had as Buckeyes.

I never saw a Buckeye team lose fewer than 3 games in a season my entire time at tOSU, so I'm enjoying this run.

You've tempered it quite a bit. Earlier you said that you expect Ohio State to be in the top 4 every year which is an entitled and unrealistic expectation. Shit happens and believe it or not there are other great programs out there. Ohio State has been in the conversation every year of the playoff era which is amazing but apparently that isn't good enough for you.

And most of the '80s, so what's your point?

University admins obviously accepted mediocrity for most of the '60s/'70s/'80s/'90s and now it's nice that the university obviously no longer accepts mediocrity. Indeed, as well as Tressel did in the early 21st century, to replace him they hired a coach who clocked Tressel's team 41-14 in 2006. Lucky for the Buckeyes he was available at the time or they might have regressed back into mediocrity.

And if not for the previous mediocrity Ohio State would currently be leading in all-time wins.

I digress, something Urban says he tries not to do nowadays.

I don't want any messages saying 'I'm holding my position.' We're not holding a goddamned thing. We're advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding anything except the enemy's balls. We're going to hold him by his balls and we're going to kick him in the ass; twist his balls and kick the living shit out of him all the time. Our plan of operation is to advance and keep on advancing. We're going to go through the enemy like shit through a tinhorn.

da fuq? If it weren't for the scUM games in the late 80s/thru the 90s, Cooper's era was every bit as good. Hell without Cooper Ohio State wouldn't have been in the position it was for the early JT era. And calling Woody's years mediocre is dumb...they were anything but mediocre....

Every coach as an expiration date. JT was nearing his, Cooper hit his as did Bruce and Woody. One day UFM will as well. That's not accepting mediocrity, it's reality. Accepting mediocrity would have been extending Fickell in 2011 or hiring Glen Mason instead of Tressel in 2001....

Getting really excited about this game now. I assume it's going to be a virtual home game for OSU. Other than Sam Darnold I don't know too much about USC and how good they are. Defense seems to be mediocre but their offense is definitely dangerous. How's everyone feeling about this matchup?

So, I like the matchup. But...I find very little reason to be excited about playing in the fucking Cotton Bowl. Maybe I understand not getting into the playoffs, but playing us on December 29th and shunning us from a New Years Bowl seems like a giant middle finger unless I have missed the memo that the Cotton Bowl is now the best bowl game that doesn't get you into the playoffs.

Don't get me wrong, I want to win this game bad and I love getting to play USC. I just can't fathom why we are playing in the Cotton Bowl against them.
Cotton and peach weaseled their way into being New Years 6 bowls. Fiesta, sugar, rose and orange are historically the top bowls, but we needed 6 so there we go. A traditionalist will say WTf. Future generations will see cotton as great.
