Interesting article....

EVEN THOUGH THE OUTCOME WAS A HOLTMANN HOME RUN, OHIO STATE FANS GOT TO SEE THE UGLY SIDE OF A COACHING SEARCH THIS WEEK

82809_h.jpg,qitok=cytvCXjc.pagespeed.ce.bBEUumIv1e.jpg

Chris Holtmann is the new head coach of the Ohio State men's basketball team. That is cool and good, because Holtmann seems cool and good, and if everything goes well Ohio State fans will forget that the first half of this coaching search, the one in which we spent the middle of this week furious that the decidedly uncool Greg McDermott from Creighton might become the next head coach.

Which caused us to spend several hours Wednesday night griping on Twitter about something that didn't end up happening. It was dumb and ridiculous and you would really hope that in the two months that Gene Smith had to think about this, he would've come up with a better plan than "let's wing it!" It seems to have all worked out in the end, but in more of a Wacky Races kind of way instead of a Mission: Impossible kind of way.

Which is exactly my point.

A decade ago, then-Michigan athletic director Bill Martin was chilling on a boat in the Atlantic ocean as the city of Ann Arbor was about to burn to the ground in a righteous fury because the AD of one of the most important collegiate institutions in America was seemingly unconcerned that because Lloyd Carr had recently left, he was without a head football coach for a damn month. I'll let The BIG HOUSE Blog (yes, that's how they prefer to write it) summarize:

I am deep in the middle of reading John Bacon's 3 and Out, which clearly details how Sailboat Bill completely screwed up the coaching search, which alienated pretty much every group associated with the University including; Alumni, former players, President Mary Sue Coleman, the media, and all Michigan fans. If you think about it, being able to piss off so many people was quite an accomplishment.

The Sailboat weekend pretty much went as we thought.
  • Les Miles wants the job and tries to contact Bill.
  • Bill doesn't return the messages and takes off for a long weekend (side note: when you are in the middle of the most important thing you do in your job, it's probably not the best time to take a long weekend)
  • Bill gets a new cell phone and doesn't know how to use it. Really? How do you not know how to answer a phone?
  • Herbie breaks the Miles to Michigan story
  • All hell breaks loose and Bill is on his sailboat and listening to a Kansas CD.
  • Bill doesn't realize what has happen until he gets home from Florida.
  • Complete disaster
You can read a less bullet-pointy version of this narrative from MLive.com, but the ultimate result of this is that Les Miles was never going to become the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. In part because there are a lot of old angry boosters who hate Les Miles for some reason, but also in part because Bill Martin completely borked one of the most important responsibilities of his career.

To commemorate Michigan screwing this up so unbelievably badly, I made a really excellent photoshop that I'm very proud of to this day. Michigan fans have commemorated it by editing Bill Martin's Wikipedia page.

The thing is though, even after all of this, (most reasonable) Michigan fans didn't think the search was a failure. After all, their eventual hire of Rich Rodriguez meant that they were bringing in one of the hottest young coaching talents in the country on to campus. Hiring Rich Rod was the equivalent of Texas going out and getting Tom Herman; the excitement was real and justified. And then, as Rodriguez failed to produce anything resembling a competent football team, it all kind of blew up in their faces.

The whole cycle then repeats itself with Brady Hoke, who has one good year followed by increasingly bad years, and then the manna that is Jim Harbaugh falls from the heavens somehow and all is okay. For now.

And really don't forget that you could always be a Butler fan, sitting back and wondering just what the hell just happened.

Uh no considering he just took South Carolina to the Final Four and has been successful everywhere

The guy's been at South Carolina for 5 years and his record in conference is well south of .500. And the SEC isn't exactly a basketball powerhouse conference. His career record (213-128) is nothing stellar either. So I would disagree with your notion that he's "been successful everywhere." And that doesn't even get into the off-the-court stuff, which I suggest you look into.

ONE OF CHRIS HOLTMANN'S TOP PRIORITIES WILL BE TO HIT THE GROUND RUNNING IN THE CLASS OF 2018

82849_h.jpg,qitok=6qkYAim-.pagespeed.ce.hMr9KYPGGX.jpg

And when Holtmann was officially announced, there was a statement from Smith that featured a key phrase.

“Chris is focused on academics, is a high-integrity person, a relentless recruiter with Midwestern ties and a proven winner,” it said.

And perhaps no class is as important to the Ohio State program than 2018.

With only nine scholarship players on the roster for 2017–18 — two of whom are seniors in Jae'Sean Tate and Kam Williams — the Buckeyes have the potential to bring in a monster class in the 2018 cycle. Ohio State only has one current commitment in four-star guard Dane Goodwin and though Goodwin said recently he remains solid in his pledge to the Buckeyes despite the coaching change he and his family will still meet with Holtmann to discuss the future and figure out what's best.

So, that's the first order of business: keeping Goodwin in this class. Next would be building a strong group around him, and Holtmann can do just that within the state of Ohio.

Scout.com recently released its updated top-100 prospects for the 2018 class and five — Goodwin included — are from Ohio. Holtmann and Ohio State need to land several of these talents.

The good news? He and his staff already have relationships established with some of them. Jerome Hunter, arguably the best player in the state, had an offer from Holtmann and Co. at Butler. So too did Dwayne Cohill, a four-star guard from Cleveland who would be a big-time land if he ended up at Ohio State.

GENE SMITH DISPELS RUMORS SURROUNDING OHIO STATE'S BASKETBALL COACHING SEARCH

That search pointed them to Chris Holtmann, who Smith says was his No. 1 target from the beginning. He didn't get him at first, though.

"He was my target. He was my target from the very beginning from Monday night. Then we offered him a job on Tuesday. He had trepidation."

The hesitancy caused Smith to up the ante.

"It was initially a seven-year contract [offer]. I did go to eight hopefully to push his wife over the edge.

"I didn't care about him. I cared about Lori," Smith joked. "I was trying to push her over the edge. [A six-year contract offer] was never on the table at all."

While Holtmann pondered his future, Smith checked over some other candidates.

The Columbus Dispatch reported Smith targeted Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams, West Virginia's Bob Huggins, and Providence's Ed Cooley after Arizona's Sean Miller and Xavier's Chris Mack rejected overtures. In a follow-up, it said Smith flew to Roanoke, Virginia to do so.

Though Smith didn't contend talks with other candidates, he denied flying to Roanoke—with a noted caveat.

"I was not in Roanoke. The plane was in Roanoke, but I wasn't on it. The reality is Tuesday and Wednesday I was traveling a lot. I spoke to a number of people. I met with a few people. But fortunately [Holtmann] and I agreed to meet Thursday morning."

That meeting occurred at an "unbelievable place" in Dayton.

"I was able to wake up and get my wife up after three hours of sleep to drive with me to Dayton. He did the same thing. He and Lori met me in Dayton. It was an unbelievable place. We sat and had a great conversation and got to know one another. He accepted the job. I called Eddie and said, 'We're done. Release everybody else. We got our guy.'"
