2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

But that's my point. Didn't Clemson and Alabama ride their starters into the ground during the ENTIRE season? Hence their players breaking down so much in the NFL. I much prefer the OSU method, but this year will truly be the year we see how it works out. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. The depth and rotation sounds great, but if say Jalyn Holmes or Sam Hubbard are having monster, do you still substitute them out to keep them fresh if they're having amazing games, same goes Damon Arnette and Kendall Sheffield and Ward? Or do you ride the hot hand like what the other teams have done? It's an interesting scenario on both accounts.

I'm in the camp of pick your best guys and let's roll.

I see the LB group as not really changing much year to year - been very solid with little drop off year to year. 2017/18 should be no different. In fact, if Booker stays healthy I can see the unit being every bit is a solid as last year. Baker is a major star, Booker has the talent to be and Worley is just a stud and a leader who is no slouch himself.

Everyone knows the crazy run we have had in the secondary. It's foolish to expect it to be the exact same in 2017/18 but it's also foolish to forget Coombs is still a great coach who clearly gets his unit ready. I expect a fairly significant drop off but not to the level to cause panic. I see the D Line helping out the secondary a lot and I see the unit being very dependable by week 6 or 7.

The D Line being the best in the country is typical preseason hyperbole but it clearly should be one of the deepest. I think a lot rides on the interior - if Sprinkle can get close his level against ND by mid sesaon and D Jones and Landers can reach up another level it will be huge. I expect Bosa to make his own name for himself and the casual fan to know the names Jonathan Cooper and Chase Young by years end.

I was going to say this about the D Line but I think it applies to the entire defense really - quality depth makes a huge difference towards the meat of the schedule and post season. The teams that can 'next man up' due to injury or just keep guys somewhat fresh by that point by substituting a lot early mid season have a HUGE advantage. It's not just true within each game but almost more so when viewed by the grind of a season - the team that can stay fresh and/or replace injured players has a major leg up.

More-so than any year in the Meyer era I expect this season to fully showcase the year after year of great recruiting classes.
The defensive line has got to win the Penn State game for us. If we are forced to blitz (which I doubt we will need to) then the deep ball will be there for them down the field, and I'm telling you McSorley will hit the deep ball if we give him time. How the 2nd corner plays IMO will define if we are a top 5 defense or a top 20

I honestly think our LB group this year will be much better then last year. We essentially return 3 returning starters and get more athletic by putting a former safety as MLB. My only concern is teams would want to go power on us but we honestly won't see that much this year other then scum. When that happens though I really hope we put 5 dlineman out there to compensate

And most likely when/if we make the CFP. Saban is waiting and salivating to throw those big uglies at Worley and Baker...

I think it depends on the opponent. If it's Oklahoma/Penn State/scUM you obviously keep the starters who have a hot hand in the game. If it's the lower part of the Big 10 and UNLV I like the idea of going with regular reps and giving the backups more reps when it starts getting out of hand. The fresher the main guys are for the better opponents the better.
But then again, on the other spectrum, we've recruited well enough to where there shouldn't be a drop off from Lewis to Bosa or Hubbard to Holmes, etc. Wouldn't the staff want to rotate backups in against OU/Ped St/scum?

Top 5 or top 20? Is there any chance w/o horrble luck with injuries they'll not be top 3 in overall defense. Returning talent, schedule, and obvious trajectory make first in that category likely this year.

Yeah there's a big chance. We lost 3 first round DBs and while I'm confident in our corners I'm anxious to see what the safety do.

We were a top 5 defense last year and losing 3 players the caliber of our DBs may prove tougher then we think.

I think personally we end up with a top 10 defense that has a few more missed assignments then we would like but it won't be anything that'll cost us games.

However we need the dline to win us that PSU game IMO. if they enable us to dominate with only 4 up front so we can drop and defend the hail Mary BS they pull off then I like us in that game big.

Malik's ability to erase potential big plays with his anticipation and absurd range is likely irreplaceable. I agree with whoever said he's likely a generational talent even at the NFL level. Otherwise I'm in trust the coaches and the talent mode.

I hope the defense and the D Line in particular isn't reading their own pre season press clippings. The best D Line in football? That's a way too optimistic view at this point despite the ridiculous depth. What I need to see before anointing the group with any accolades in that ball park is the ability to dominate a game the way Big Bear and crew did against the Domers and Clemson did to us last year. There's a lot of talent there but they need to shut some good teams down before I'm convinced they are elite.

Point is, I hope they are hungry to show something. At this point the core group along the D Line has a lot to prove still IMO.

No one knew anything about Malik before the Spring game and balled out last season. I thought Gareon would have a,drop off from Eli. I thought Marshawn would leave osu as an Afterthought due to injuries. Coombs and Schiano have shown that they can develop talent. I'm not too worried about the DBs.

I want to see us hold teams to 50 yards rushing or less this season. Constantly keeping teams in long passing downs will do nothing but let the defense feast and these young guys will get a ton of opportunities.

To @jwinslow 's point, the offense will have more to do with that than anything else.

Meyers game philosophy is the opposite of Tress. He believes in being aggressive on offense with tempo, scoring often and having a defense built to force turnovers/ make big plays when the other team is predictable (i.e. always throwing).

If he is back to having a 40+ point a game offense then opponents can kiss the baby.

Seriously.
