2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Anyone look up carries per game in Deshaun Watsons and Jalen Hurts careers and the NC game? Makes you think a little bit about the QB run being part of the package.

Regardless, Urb needs to totally step away and give Wilson the reigns because I doubt he relies on it so much as a crutch.

Saw a VERY telling stat the other day. I'm sure it's been mentioned on this thread. Of Urbs 7 losses at tOSU, 5 of them saw the QB lead the team in carries. And we have seen that with all of his OCs so he is the common element.

Obviously we have major offensive issues. But if you don't think a big factor in the Big-12's high scoring offenses has been their atrocious defense, you haven't been paying attention the last 10 years
Even bad defenses don't give up 700 yards throwing in one game... It does take some skill to do what they do and that's what I'm interested in. Yeah big 12 struggles with defense but you have to give them some credit for having systems in place to expose people on offense.

Just as we demand from big 12 folks regarding our defensive performances in the big ten

We shouldn't have to study any team? Screw that we should study the best offensive staffs in America because UFM is not a top offensive mind. He's an excellent motivator and knows how to pull everything together to get great results but we should always be willing to take an idea and make it our own.

I'm not saying scratch everything we do and run OU's offense but rather see why their passing games are so good and see if we can implement features of it to [Zeke] off our strong run game. We know we can run the ball and I think that's why we try to force the issue throwing the ball because frankly it's boring to call 4 of 5 plays as runs and we have this urge to be balanced.

I have no doubt our WRs are as physically gifted as OUs or Okie Lite who go for 300-400 yards passing per game. So we should be figuring out why can they do it and why can't we.

Spare me the big 12 defense talk because Tech Texas went for what 700 yards passing while we went for like 150? I realize we won and TT didn't but it should merit figuring out why they found so much success and why we struggled.

Again I'm not saying kill our offense and get TTs offense in here and start throwing for 400 yards... I'm saying figure out why they have so much space when they throw and figure out how they structure the throw game in hopes we can easily throw for 200+ per game against quality opponents
The problem with what youre saying is that you're not getting, that OSU isn't a strong passing team. Our run game is what has always set up our passing games. People can go crazy for Cardale's arm for throwing over the top of defenses, but if it wasn't for Zeke, that wouldn't have been possible. The Big 12 offenses you're talking about have leaking sieve defenses which allow for their offenses to get the ball back and play a game of "who has it last" in order to win games. That's what I'd never want to study. Like I clearly stated, we have an OC who has clear and profound success in a spread power running scheme that our team is built to run right now with JT or any of the other QBs on our roster. We don't have 6 competent WRs like Urban keep sayings, we have 3-4 tops, and 2 very good RBs. No, we don't know that we can run the ball, we did it in one game this year and then scratched it, so essentially we haven't shown that we can do much of anything on offense but run our QB. If we knew how to run the ball then we probably would've beaten OU(and probably MSU in 2015). OSU has no clue what they want to be on offense at this point, they want to run when its convenient, and then all of the sudden stop using their RBs and run JT, and all of the sudden heave the ball
And that's great that Texas Tech goes for 700yds, how many NCs and conference championships do they have again? That's like after losing 1 game Bill Belichek should start studying the Chargers or the Saints...

EFFICIENCY, BALANCE ON OFFENSE LEADS OHIO STATE TO 38-7 WIN AGAINST ARMY

85513_h.jpg

While Army possessed the ball for nearly 14 minutes more than Ohio State in Saturday’s game at Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes were still able to dominate the scoreboard thanks to their efficiency on the offensive side of the ball.

The Buckeyes scored on six of their first eight offensive possessions in Saturday’s game – and drove 75 yards before kneeling to run out the clock on their ninth and final possession – in their 38-7 win over the Black Knights in the Horseshoe.

That was a big improvement over last week, when the Buckeyes scored on only four of their 12 possessions in their 31-16 loss to Oklahoma.

Considering the competition in Saturday’s game – Army isn’t nearly as talented as Oklahoma, nor the teams the Buckeyes will have to beat to make a College Football Playoff – it shouldn’t be said that the Buckeyes’ offensive issues are fixed. That’s something that will have to be proved in time. But Ohio State’s offensive efficiency was more than enough for the Buckeyes to win comfortably on Saturday, and the Buckeyes believe they made the steps they needed to move in the right direction.

"You have to be very balanced," said Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. "And I thought we were very balanced today."

RUN-PASS OPTION PLAYS IGNITE OHIO STATE OFFENSE IN BLOWOUT VICTORY OVER ARMY

85512_h.jpg

One of the greatest strengths of Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is, and always has been his ability to run the zone read to near perfection.

So it only made sense for the Buckeyes to add one more element to Barrett's progression to help get its anemic pass offense back on track. With teams dropping as many as eight defenders into coverage against Ohio State's offense in its first two games, the Buckeyes finally adapted against Army in a 38-7 victory on Saturday.

Running a variety of run-pass option plays - the majority of which resulted in short completions to wide receivers - the Ohio State offense exploded for 586 total yards with Barrett being responsible for 302.

Head coach Urban Meyer, who said he wasn't happy with the way Ohio State called plays in a loss to Oklahoma, praised the Buckeyes' effort following the Army win, making a point to mention his two offensive coordinators.

"I thought Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day did a nice job mixing and matching. It's all how you play, how they're playing – if they're starting to pack it in there, you get outside," Meyer said. "Our RPOs were good. The run-pass options a lot of times (are) where you see J.T. pull the ball and kick it out there and get really plus yards."
