2017 tOSU Offense Discussion

Urban talking in his presser about "they took JK away in the read option" and I'm going NO [Mark May]! I've been saying it a while now.

It isn't really tough to decide how to defend the read option vs Ohio State - do I want the tailback running at me or JT Barrett? Overplay Dobbins, make JT read "keep" and tackle him. Yeah, he'll get a few good runs. But he won't kill you, you'll wear him down - matters when it's time for him to throw - and Dobbins becomes a non factor.

Anyone who thinks we won't keep seeing that is kidding themselves. "JT had more carries than any back - fire Tim Beck!" Beck is gone. It's the read option. Like every other "OMG this is awesome!" offense, defenses eventually figure it out. You need to be able to deal with that, not keep trying it and thinking THIS week it'll work.
Exactly... I'm just amazed we don't really learn from losses.

Losses= jt out rushing the backs and linebacker unable to cover underneath

We had a bash tag on our runs that I'm sure is still there, where the RB and QB switch play responsibilities. The QB keeps and goes play side if the the optioned player plays contain, or hands off if he crashes. We used it in 2014 when teams were trying to force Cardale to keep.

With the way everyone plays us, it'd be guaranteed carries for Dobbins with favorable numbers.

Pro style was most likely used because we didn't have a QB in Cardale to run the read option effectively, and his skill set was more pro style oriented. When they tried to integrate him into the read option, it didn't work for him. You don't just completely change your entire offense more than halfway through the season, this isn't a video game. And the pro style offense that Cardale ran was so simplified that it would have minimal effect for an entire season. And changing an offense doesn't just change the QB, but also the blocking scheme as well, can you imagine trying to install a completely new offense and blocking scheme against a hungry and rabid MSU team? I wouldn't want to.
Bama has been a pro style run oriented smash you in the mouth team for years. They implement a few spread options at times, but their offense is what it is at the end of the day and that's its identity. Any good team has an identity on offense to be successful. This year ND is a run oriented team, Clemson has always been a spread quick strike offense, MSU/Wisky/Iowa are pro style run oriented, etc, they are what they are and recruit accordingly.
Do you think the offensive struggles more recently have more to do with the system we run in general or the players we have? I probably shouldn’t include Iowa because that felt more like it was more on the offensive players plus the entire defense not showing up than the scheme.

Its hard to answer that because OSU has had 4 losses in the past 2 seasons, and all for different reasons, and I wouldn't put the players talent as a reason for any of them.
2016:
Ped St: coaching let off the gas, and a fluke special teams error essentially cost the game
Clemson: tOSU flat out got outplayed and out coached by a better team and an inefficient one dimensional offense put OSU dead to rights immediately

2017:
Urban/Wilson: played too conservative and didnt seem to believe in JT and his arm nor the WRs
Iowa: team was exhausted emotionally from the Ped St win and a little too cocky from the press and fans fawning over them all week, and they lost their hunger, IMO

My finger would be pointed at them men making millions of dollars and not putting the players in positions to succeed to be honest. The zone read can be ran to perfection and win championships, but its up to the coaches to find ways to get the ball in the best players hands

Repeatedly running into a brick wall didn't work in 2015 and I doubt it works tomorrow afternoon.
Running predictably with the QB on every play won't work(like in 2015). If we can get the ball in the hands of Dobbins and Weber(heck, even Campbell) and actually make in game adjustments, we can beat Sparty(like we could've/should've beaten Iowa). We must be the team imposing their wills

Just so tough to stop when we can bludgeon teams with the running game.

JT needs to stay away from the INTS but this kind of running game is what won us the title in 2014 and will be what wins it for us next time we win it too.

I know scum won't have an answer for our backs either. However are we going line up and get physical or will we buy into the inevitable hype that will surround scum leading into that game.

We can go for 300 against scum if we want to. Same goes for Alabama or any team in the country for that matter. As I told a buddy yesterday the only people I've ever seen stop our run game is our coaching staff.
