We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 89 JOHN FRANK
Thirty-five years removed from the end of his Ohio State career, John Frank remains the Buckeyes' all-time leader in both receptions and receiving yards for a tight end.

99 WARRIORS: NO. 88, TWO-TIME ALL-AMERICAN DEFENSIVE END VAN DECREE

93538_h.jpg

We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 88 VAN DECREE
After a standout prep career at Warren Western Reserve, Van DeCree joined the Ohio State football team in 1971.

DE VAN DECREE
1971-74
b. Sept. 24, 1953 (Warren, OH)
  • All-American (1973, '74)
  • All-Big Ten (1972, '73, '74)
  • Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (1990)
  • Ohio State Football All-Century Team (1999)
Standing 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, DeCree compiled 128 total tackles, eight tackles for a loss and one defensive touchdown over two All-American seasons in 1973 and 1974. He was a three-time all-Big Ten selection; won three conference titles and a Rose Bowl; and never lost to Michigan — though a 10-10 tie kept the program from winning the national title during his junior season.

DeCree was not drafted by the National Football League, but played professionally for the World Football League’s Chicago Winds and Birmingham Vulcans. The league ceased operations halfway through its second season for financial reasons, and the Vulcans were declared champions by virtue of having the best record.

99 WARRIORS: NO. 87, FORMER TEAM CAPTAIN AND MAYOR OF COLUMBUS GREG LASHUTKA

93576_h.jpg

We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 87 GREG LASHUTKA
Anytime you can be named a captain for a Woody Hayes-coached team, chances are you are going to be one of the best in Ohio State history to wear your number.

TE GREG LASHUTKA
1963-65
b. March 28, 1944 (New York, NY)
  • Three-year starter (1963-65)
  • Team Captain (1965)
Greg Lashutka was a three-year letterman and starter for Ohio State from 1963-65 as a tight end. In 1963, he caught one of his two career touchdowns against Indiana, in what was just his second career game. The Buckeyes finished the 1963 season with a 5-3-1 record and a second-place finish in the Big Ten. OSU concluded the season with a 14-10 win over Michigan in Ann Arbor in front of just 36,424 fans, the least-attended game at the Big House in 20 years.

99 WARRIORS: NO. 86, FORMER TEAM CAPTAIN AND ROSE BOWL HERO JAKE BALLARD

93601_h.png

We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 86 JAKE BALLARD
Though he spent his four seasons as a block-first tight end in a Jim Bollman offense, the most iconic play in Jake Ballard's career was a catch in traffic.

TE JAKE BALLARD
2006-2010
b. Dec. 2, 1987 (Springboro, OH)
  • Team Captain (2009)
  • Big Ten Champion (2006, '07, '08, '09)
  • Super Bowl XLVI champion
Ballard had just 34 catches for 377 yards and three touchdowns during his four-year career, but one of those catches came late in the fourth during the 2010 Rose Bowl against Oregon, when the senior captain out-jumped a number of Duck defenders to haul in a long third-down reception, allowing the Buckeyes to score and put the game away.

Ballard won a Big Ten title every season at Ohio State and went a perfect 4-0 against Michigan. He went on to play a short career in the NFL where he won Super Bowl XLVI with the New York Giants over the New England Patriots. He had two catches for 10 yards in the game.

99 WARRIORS: NO. 85, NATIONAL CHAMPION, CAPTAIN AND LOU GROZA WINNER MIKE NUGENT

93616_h.jpg

We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 85 MIKE NUGENT
Our selection for No. 85 was one of easiest on our ballot. Mike Nugent, the most accurate kicker in Ohio State history is the best Buckeye to ever wear his number.

K MIKE NUGENT
2001-04
b. March 2, 1982 (Centerville, OH)
  • National Champion (2002)
  • Team Captain, MVP (2004)
  • Lou Groza Winner (2004)
  • OSU Career Points Leader
Nugent came to Ohio State in 2001, the same year Jim Tressel took the reigns in Columbus. After beating out Josh Huston for the kicking job his freshman season, Nugent helped Ohio State win a national title in 2002, leading the team in scoring (120 points) by converting on 25 of 28 field goal attempts and 45 of 46 extra points. For his efforts during the title season, Nugent was a runner-up for the Lou Groza Award, losing out to Iowa's Nate Kaeding.

In 2003, Nugent again led the Buckeyes in scoring, converting on 16 of 19 field goal attempts and converted on all 38 extra point attempts, finishing with 86 points.

Nugent's senior year wasn't as productive as his 2002 season, but it was perhaps more memorable. The Centerville, Ohio native tied the school record for the longest field goal in Ohio Stadium, nailing a 55-yard field goal to beat Marshall in the second game of the 2004 season. His four field goals and two extra points in the 2004 Alamo Bowl against Oklahoma State gave him the school record for points scored (356), passing Pete Johnson (348). He went on to win the Lou Groza Award as a senior before being drafted in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

93595_h.png

We're counting down the days to kickoff with “99 Warriors,” the greatest Ohio State Buckeyes by jersey number, as voted by the staff of Eleven Warriors.

NO. 84 JIM HOUSTON
A star in an era where college football players routinely lined up on both sides of the ball, Jim Houston has a resume that still ranks him among Ohio State's all-time player greats.

DE JIM HOUSTON
1957-1959
b. Nov. 3, 1937 (Massillon, Ohio)
  • National Champion (1957)
  • First-Team All-American (1958, 1959)
  • Team MVP (1958, 1959)
  • Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame (1979)
  • Ohio State All-Century Team (2000)
  • College Football Hall of Fame (2005)
After helping the Buckeyes win a national championship in 1957, Houston was a first-team All-American in both 1958 and 1959. He was also named Ohio State's team MVP for both of those years, making him one of just seven Buckeyes to earn that honor twice (Gomer Jones, Ralph Wolfe, Vic Janowicz, Hopalong Cassady, Archie Griffin and Beanie Wells).

In an era where college football teams ran the ball far more than they threw, Houston spent most of his time in Woody Hayes' offense as a run blocker, but also caught 19 career passes for 467 yards and seven touchdowns, including 11 catches for a team-high 214 yards and four touchdowns in 1959.

Also a defensive standout for the Buckeyes, Houston was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 8 overall pick in the 1960 NFL draft and became a four-time Pro Bowler at linebacker, playing 13 total seasons for the team.

Houston was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
