2018 NCAA Baseball Tourney (Official Thread)

Hey yall remember back in April when Ohio St was top 10 nationally in runs per game? Good times

8-11 in May/June and hit .204 w/risp

April showers bring May flounders?

May/June 2018: (8-11)
May 2017: (5-8)
May/June 2016: (17-6)
May 2015: (4-10)
May 2014: (5-8)
May 2013: (7-9)
May 2012: (9-7)
May 2011: (7-9)

Not a good look for Beals. A couple of at large bids were blown in those May collapses.

Unfortunately, they made the NCAA tournament so he probably will be back again next year. I think he needs to take a good look at his pitching coach.

Yeah Beals ain’t goin anywhere. I, too, have soured on Stafford a bit but he ain’t going anywhere either. Stafford and Beals have been together since Ball St so it would take a lot for Beals to cut him loose or maybe some sorta of mandate from above, but i don’t think anybody at OSU cares enough about baseball to be bothered.

The worst two staffs of the Beals era have been the last two and that’s troubling for sure. I was just thinking how I bet Beals regrets redshirting Jahn and those other pitchers. I don’t blame him for that move. I mean, who could have anticipated the pen would regress so much as the year progressed? Pav, Michalik, Irving, Smith, Waning, etc just got worse and worse with each outing . Seriously, Woodby and Kinker were all we had by the end. Nobody else could be counted on to throw strikes. Well, Michalik could throw strikes but his 80 mph center cut fastballs were easy pickings. Bleh...enough of that...

Some good news? we got a lot of promising arms coming in. Next years team will have plenty of new faces but I absolutely believe they can be better than this years team.

Edit: Jahn didn't redshirt. Duermit and Theis did. I honestly don't know what happened to Jahn. Highly rated HS prospect transferred in from South Carolina. Pitched an inning and disappeared . He's still on the roster so maybe he was injured?

The Florida Gators earned a spot in the College World Series with a steal of home and a wild walk-off homer

Pitchers are not allowed to "deceive the runner." If the umpiring crew determines that the pitcher was, in fact, deceiving a runner with a throw over to first base, for example, it's a balk.

Runners, on the other hand, don't have to follow this rule. They're free to try to be as distracting or aggressive as they'd like.

This includes executing perfectly crafted maneuvers that catch the pitcher off-guard and allow the runner on third to steal home, as the Florida Gators' Blake Reese (on third base) and Nick Horvath (on first base) pulled off in their Super Regionals matchup with the Auburn Tigers on Monday night:

Horvath totally faked a fall-down between first and second, buying enough time for Reese to scamper home. That's treachery!

The deceptive Horvath was eventually thrown out at third after trying to take advantage of the chaos and advance an extra base, but no matter.

Job well done with this one.

That sneaky run would prove important in the game, as the teams battled into the 11th inning, when the Gators won in especially dramatic fashion to punch a ticket to the College World Series for the 12th time:
