2018 NFL Draft Talk Thread

Some of this depends how likely they are to win any of the big DB free agents (Butler, Joyner, Melvin) combined with backing themselves into a corner with previous bad decisions. We can't get everything this year and Gregg Williams already fucked up taking Peppers. The CB situation goes back to Haden salary fuckup and some retard thinking Gilbert was any good. I'm betting Butler costs a lot more than $11mil too -_-
It's very frustrating to think we could still have Haden and drafted Hooker last year. Our secondary would have a great basis... it keeps coming back that this team is awful because of awful draft picks more than anything else. And now we're talking ourselves out of the most NFL ready QB we'll see anytime soon.

Similar story with pass rushers. Garrett, Ogbah, Nassib, Shelton are all recent 1/2/3 picks. Can we keep throwing picks at the DLine? Or could they be made serviceable while expending picks in areas even worse off? Though it's a similar story with WR too. After spending 9000 picks on aspiring journeyman WRs and another big fat miss on an extremely over-rated BXII athlete... it's another shitfest. Our only weapon is a pothead that can't help himself.

If we're taking a QB, we also need to preempt OL attrition sooner than later. Joe Thomas isn't immortal.
My guess is, it takes at least 3 decent drafts to make a team competitive. Not every pick needs to be a homerun, but can't recover from complete flops like Manziel, Gabriel, Coleman, Peppers, etc. either.

@kujirakira why do you think Darnold is NFL ready? I just can’t see the Browns throwing another rookie qb to the wolves and expecting different results.
Rosen is NFL ready, Darnold...not even close. Dude was a turnover machine last year and has a lot of mechanical issues that he needs to iron out. Throw him out there from day one and you can start looking for his replacement in early November.

If their rookie qb is starting week 1, then you know nothing has changed. Whoever they draft shouldn't see the field in 2018.
Whether it is Rosen, Darnold or Allen is there a reason to draft any of these guys if the Browns bring in a semi decent veteran? Is there any hope for Kizer in the future with time in a backup/learning role?

I'm a Steelers fan, and I just sit back and shake my head at the Browns front office.
IMO, trade the #1 pick for a few more picks in the draft, like a late 1st, 2nd and future 1st or 2nd(maybe the last pick is a bit much, but at least try). Get Barkley at #4, pick an OL at the end of round 1, in round 2(if you're able to then get an additional 2nd round pick) with your 2 picks, get another OL and either a LB or DB. In free agency, go after a veteran like Kirk Cousins or even McCarron. I think that Kizer is still a talented QB, but getting thrown to the wolves by arguably the worst team in the NFL didn't do him any favors, and sorry, if Tom Brady was even the Browns QB, you're still not winning more than 4 games, maybe 5. Guys like Cousins and McCarron could offer leadership qualities, but also push him on the field. The Browns have some young pieces, and regardless of him being a scum alum, Peppers could be an asset if used properly as a S/LB hybrid, but more in the flats against RBs and slot WRs. There's too much OL reliance on Thomas and I'd use multiple picks on the OL to solidify it because no matter whos at QB or RB, if the line continues to be this bad, you'll never see success. Barkley and Johnson would provide a great 1-2 punch at RB, Coleman needs to step up his consistency but has the tools, and taking a flyer on a middle round WR wouldn't be a bad idea, but more of a possession WR. Njoku is very talented.
This team is a few pieces from going from putrid to below average, and that progression should be what fans are looking for. And as long as there's a steady uptick in progress, that should be seen with positivity.

- Great plan, especially with a good looking prospect like Rosen just sitting there. After all, we sure don't want that.

Get Barkley at #4

- The last time a Cleveland FO believed a RB was their savior worked out really well.

In free agency, go after a veteran like Kirk Cousins or even McCarron.

- Cousins isn't happening, point blank.

I think that Kizer is still a talented QB, but getting thrown to the wolves by arguably the worst team in the NFL didn't do him any favors

- Kizer's talent was always in question. The only thing that kept me from burning what is left of my Browns gear is that we held off until the 2nd at least.

Tom Brady was even the Browns QB, you're still not winning more than 4 games, maybe 5.

- This shit fest lost 5 games by a TD or less all on their own. Give them a HoF and they'll probably be Wildcard.

Guys like Cousins and McCarron could offer leadership qualities, but also push him on the field.

- Push... Kizer? I'm not dropping 100mil on Cousins to "push" a 2nd year QB.

The Browns have some young pieces, and regardless of him being a scum alum, Peppers could be an asset if used properly as a S/LB hybrid

- You must have missed his entire scUM career and all of last year too.

There's too much OL reliance on Thomas and I'd use multiple picks on the OL to solidify it because no matter whos at QB or RB if the line continues to be this bad,

- Bito, Tretter and Zietler form one of the better trios of interior in the NFL. The line isn't bad at all.

Coleman needs to step up his consistency but has the tools

- Did he have new hands and eyeballs surgically attached? No? Then the only tool he has is great initial burst.

Njoku is very talented.

- Only accurate thing you posted there aside from the Steelers fan part.

I assumed you meant Darnold when you were talking most NFL ready? Rosen?

Yeah, throwing the towel in on Rosen b/c he doesnt want to play for the Browns is some epic fail from multiple angles. I mean we're so bad top prospects can openly say they don't want to play for us... and everyone in the NFL is like "yeah, good choice"... even the Browns are like "you're right"

New GM needs to be on that. Seems like he's the only guy worth taking 1 in this draft but we're trying to talk ourselves into Allen (raw project) or Darnold (turnover machine that could be made serviceable - but #1 overall ? Hell no). We either need to take Rosen ... or hold him ransom at #1 and take one of those other guys at #4 ... and still need a McCarron or Foles or Taylor or whatever to keep the heir apparent on the bench for a year. I mean fuckit, draft Rosen 1, next QB available at 4, and buy McCarron for all I care. Somebody will come calling... and hold leverage on Rosen if he really refuses to play. That locks up 2 QBs we can trade in the future (McCarron + 1 draft pick), assuming this team isn't so awful that neither of them ever turns out decent. Which would be very Cleveland Browns.

I wouldn't touch Barkley in top 5 either; esp with serviceable Duke on the roster. It'd be one thing if he played like his size but I've become a broken record on Barkley.

The problem with taking Rosen isn't necessarily that he would refuse to play. You take a QB that high with the hope and expectation that they'll be your guy for the next 15 years. Even if he signs, starts day one, develops into a good or very good player...he'll more than likely be on the first plane out right as he's entering his prime. If he doesn't want to be there now, I doubt 5-6 years in the AFC North is going to change his mind.

The best case scenario there is you tag him a couple times and hope there's a team that's not only desperate enough to give you a king's ransom to get him before he hits FA, but also has a ton of cap space because unless he totally shits the bed, he'll probably be next QB in line to be the highest paid player in the league.

That's a bridge we cross later. Right now this team has won 1 game in 2 years.
Having a QB playing to leave in FA and getting franchised sounds like a great problem to have.
I think it's a foregone conclusion that Browns are taking a QB with 1 or 4... if that guy, whoever it is, is starting in 2018... then it's business as usual for the Browns.
