2018 QB Battle Discussion

I hate this kind of flip-flopping w/ QBs. Just watch the Michigan series on Amazon to see how that plays out.
Or our own season in 2015.
It also divides the locker room ... how many incompletions are too many? How many interceptions? There's already so much pressure on QBs to perform or get replaced within the sport... having their own coaches hang that swinging axe above a player's head is setting them up for failure.
Pick a dude and ride him. I've stated my slight personal preference, but respect coaches' decision and hope they stick with whoever they chose. Only caveat is if we start losing games attributable to QB play... and then you make the switch decisively during/after that game.
If Urban makes a change on performance during the season.. then he blew it and the season is in disarray.

I watched it work out pretty well one time when Tressel finally realized Zwick wasn't the guy and gave Troy Smith a shot.

True but the lack of separation in camp/practice that only sorted itself out in the heat of battle is what it feels like we are seeing again in '18.

Overall I do not have a good feeling about this. If you have two, you don't have one kind of thing.
To me it feels like Haskins should be the guy but hasn't seized control, which is a problem when he has such a giant weakness in the running game (and Burrow is a B+ or better performer in all disciplines).

The single most sobering thing to me was seeing how far Martell is from being an effective passer (at least in the spring game).

I was led to believe he possessed much more arm talent than what I saw on Saturday.

I agree. Because Haskins started out with such a huge head start due to his winning the game for us against scUM (and rightly so), I think it's pretty telling as to the Burrow vs. Haskins winner this spring that Urban hasn't declared an overall winner.

This battle does have a bit of Barrett vs Cardale type feel to it. Barrett was the heady and consistent QB, while Cardale was the big arm and higher ceiling type. Although Burrow and Haskins lack the leadership threshold that JTB had. Both are well equipped to lead the offense.

This team has enough parts to win the B1G with either QB. It's up to Meyer and the O staff to decide if they want to go with an A student across the board or someone with A+'s and a few B's.

Besides the 'give and take' attributes of JB and DH, I am more concerned about some opining that one of the guys has more locker room support than the other. If this is true, would it be within the realm of possibility that the one lacking support opts to transfer ahead of UFM's decision? JB has options, maybe he doesn't want to play for a coach (and/or team) unconvinced he is the best fit.

The "sample size" for whoever gets the job is small. And a full season with a new starter and WRs who are still dropping too many balls will be an "adventure" at times. But I believe either guy would lead this team very, very well. One of them will leave and I'm fine with that because we don't need a "divided" clubhouse. I "worry" more about Martel as a backup because we know Urban likes to run the QB and that leads to injuries. But we know it takes some luck to get to the playoffs. So, let's hope for being very good and very lucky! As always recently, our "ace in the hole" will be our depth across the whole team.

Purely looking at the past two spring games, I'd give the nod to Burrow. But those are spring games. Haskins has under his belt a comeback win on the road against Michigan, which is basically all you can want out of your OSU QB. That's what I think Urban is struggling with, and I think it's why Haskins will ultimately win the job.
