2018 QB Battle Discussion

This

We have seen the QB's with the extreme skill sets (Miller, Jones) and we have seen JT Barrett be no worse than "above average" in any skill category.

My gut tells me Haskins ends up giving way to Martel because from what limited playing time I have seen his lack of running ability (both zone read and actual running) is alarming.

The other part of me thinks Wilson/day can design the offense around a one dimensional passing QB if need be so we shall see
Sam Bradford approves of this post.

EDIT: @AuTX Buckeye for beating me to the punch

I think the offensive coordinators can make all the difference.
As proof of concept I give you most of Wilson's QBs. Including 2 Heisman winners who weren't gifted runners.
"Kevin Wilson began his rise up the college football ranks in 2002 when he took over as the co-offensive coordinator of the Oklahoma Sooners. From 2002-2010, five of Wilson’s Sooners offenses rank in the top 10 of Oklahoma scoring offenses of all-time. His scheme produced Heisman Trophy winners in Sam Bradford and Jason White."

Of the three QB's, Martell is probably the most prototypical of Urban QB's (Tebow, Braxton, and JT levels of running.) Burrow is strikingly similar to Alex Smith (though Alex Smith did have 284 rushes in two years at Utah!). Haskins is more along the lines of Troy Smith, with less leg ability. I have no idea what the point of this post is, but those are my hot takes!

I'll trust the coaches.

What are the odds on Haskins vs. Martell starting next year?
First game 100% Haskins vs Martell.

I mentioned it in the Barrett thread but Urban will not name Martell the smarter outside of something drastic until at least mid season if at all. Urban will not destroy his QB depth by naming Martell and having Haskins and Burrow transfer leaving only a true freshman as the ONLY scholarship backup.

I agree. The real question is who will be the starter in game 5. I say Martell.
