2018 QB Battle Discussion

Personally, I don't want a QB that can do what Urban wants to do. The quarterback needs to make good decisions and distribute the ball. Urban wants the quarterback to be the running back. It's stupid, as evidenced by the QB having the most carries in all his losses and several of his needlessly close games

It's not stupid, its very sound as a concept because you have more guys on offense to block and move the chains. Problem is, it shouldn't be your centerpiece really unless you have a Lamar Jackson back there and even he has gotten way better at throwing and he has no RBs near as good as Weber or Dobbins. When you have skill players like OSU does, you dont need the QB to run so much. Keeping the defense honest and occasionally demoralizing them yes, but not leading rusher.

I get the conceptual numbers part, but there's another factor that is the QB taking a LOT of extra hits. Those extra hits take a toll. They slow the QB down and weaken his throws. There's a reason that good boxers throw plenty of body blows. At the end of the game, I want my QB to have the cleanest jersey possible. That doesn't mean he doesn't have to be tough, but it means that I'm not having him take extra hits. The Ohio State consistently has NFL caliber running backs. They need to carry the ball, not the QB.

Edit: 15 carries in two and a half quarters is insane. It's probably ten too many. A keeper once in a while is plenty to keep the defense honest. A QB as your leader in rushing attempts is fucking retarded when you have two guys in the backfield that will play on Sunday. JT had more rushing attempts than JK and Mike COMBINED before he got hurt. That ratio changed once Haskins came in.

I am 100% certain that the Buckeyes would have lost The Game if JT didn't get injured. He was ineffective running the offense, he was ineffective throwing the ball, he was ineffective in getting the snaps off in a timely manner. He flat out stunk up the joint. The rushing TD was damn lucky since the Blew dropped a perfectly thrown interception the play before. The TD pass to Baugh was not a good throw.

I think it will be a battle in the Spring between Haskins and Burrow. I think Martel has to still wait his "turn". They each bring different skills to the table.

I'm pretty sure we'll see Martel on the field next year, not just in garbage time either, especially if Haskins is the starter. Look for some special packages involving Martel, especially near the goal line.

I think I remember Meyer being in a similar situation some time in the past. Don't remember who the mobile QB was, but if feel like I'm a better person just thinking about him.

What’s In a Nickname?

If the OSU running back room is crowded, then consider the quarterback room confusing.

This spring, the Buckeyes will return quarterbacks named John, Ross, and Chuck.

“John,” of course, is the name given to Joe Burrow by J.T. Barrett because Barrett’s first name is Joe and he couldn’t allow a second Joe at quarterback. “Ross” is Dwayne Haskins, who was given the name by Burrow because, to paraphrase, it was the worst name that Burrow could think of. “Chuck” is Tate Martell and he got his name last winter by strength coach Mick Marotti for some reason.

11W had their tweets of the week and I thought the mindsets of the quarterbacks were interesting.

Haskins tweeted about learning from failure and Martel tweeted about being successful.

To me that shows the difference between the two. It is hard not to want the person who has a hunger to be successful over someone talking about failure.

Far too deep of a read into that I know... but some kids know what it takes to be successful. Some kids just don't even think about failure because it's simply not an option for them.

It's really hard for me to not look at Tate and see that Baker Mayfield confidence with a refuse to lose attitude.

Which is why I wouldn't be overly shocked to see him find a way to start by years end. He's just a different guy it seems and all the kid does is win.

You honestly learn more from failure than you ever do from success. Any great men(or women) have been quoted as saying the same. IMO, that speaks higher about Haskins than it does about Martell. Anyone can easily talk about their and a team's success, it takes a certain type of person with leadership qualities to admit their failures and learn from them...

Can easily say it takes someone even more special to never think of failure because it's NEVER an option.

Missing the point but sure...

I'm not saying you can't be successful by learning from your mistakes because everyone makes them and everyone learns from them.

To me though Tates mindset just seems more intense, focused, and driven that's all.
