2018 tOSU Defense Discussion

I think he comes back because his season has been a slight disappointment. He hasn't been a known commodity like Baker and is quite undersized for NFL DTs. Crazier things have happened and he may say "screw it, I'm ready" and leave. But I just see him returning for another year. And that would be a great for this DL

I think we put way too much stock into stats, quality of play, etc. when it comes to the NFL Draft. The draft is about 1 thing...potential, and Jones is, as you've said, is through the roof.

At this point I expect Jones to leave and be a Top 60 pick. Baker I think leaves as well and he should be a 2nd day pick. Yes, I completely agree his play has been less than expected, but his athleticism jumps off the screen and scouts and teams will fall in love with that. Every team believes 100% they can change players, "coach them up", etc.

IMO - Jones would be a much bigger loss.

Agreed. Losing Jones on a defensive line with few proven stars or guys we're familiar with hurts. LB should be fine even if Baker were to leave

Which would be stupid.
I’m not familiar with his family situation or other motivations...just commenting o

This.

And for all the talk about “costing themselves money”-there are many examples going both ways. Cardale cost himself MILLIONS by coming back....as did Doss.

And as has been pointed out-we often don’t look at the biggest factor. I didn’t grow up dirt poor or in a horrible neighborhood..I can only imagine what it would be like to have grown up that way and have family still living in it, and have the opportunity to change that completely with one choice when I was 21.

I have to admit that if we don't get Jones to come back I'm a little worried about this DL... We probably should've hit DL a little harder last year in recruiting because wow if Jones goes we don't have a ton of depth.

I think Jerome should go because I don't know if his head is in the right place and I'm not sure another year would be healthy for either side. If he balls out again next month vs usc, his stock will be fine
If is head is indeed not in the right place, then it may be best for him to leave. Talent and potential mean squat if your heart isn't into it. I still think a full season without any aberrations, and with performances like against Bucky, could put him as a first-round lock...

Last year's recruiting on the DL was superb. The nation's best DE, two high end DTs and a pretty good third one in Cage.

They're just striking out this year. If they landed Cox and Oweh to go with their current DTs, it would be another monster class. They may still get two studs.

And with Bosa and Young already here, they don't need home runs (like Michigan needs from Oxford). They need good players and one guy who can contribute part time. That's where Cox hurts the most because he was a tank.

Not to mention Cooper is no slouch either. Color me not worried about the Dline.

I heard this on BN radio 5 this AM and I agree with it...

I'd love to see Booker moved to DE because he has the height and he can probably add another 10-15 pounds easily in one off season. His speed would be huge and when you factor in Booker being lost at LB I think you have a good candidate to step up at DE.

I'd rather see Berry move back and have a four man rotation of Bosa, Young, Coop, Berry.
