OHIO STATE'S RUSHING ATTACK NEEDS TO FIND ITS WAY FOR BUCKEYES TO HIT THE NEXT LEVEL

Ohio State's rushing attack is slumping.

J.K. Dobbins, Mike Weber and the Buckeyes have had their moments, of course. Through five games this year, they rank No. 33 nationally with 210.3 yards per game. But that number is a significant drop off from years past, as Ohio State has ranked 11th or better in every previous season under Meyer.

That 210-yard average is also bolstered by the 375 rushing yards Ohio State piled up against Oregon State, which boasts the third-worst run defense in the country. In every week since then, the running output has dipped.

Looked up the numbers for Dobbins & Webber through 5 games last year and this year. Last year they had 137 rushes for 825 yards. This year they have 730 yards on 134 carries. So nothing there to worry about imo, especially when you consider the competition has been better this year.

One thing that was surprising was through 5 games last year we were throwing for 316 yards a game, only 30 less than this year.

First 5 last year, one competent defense
First 5 this year, two

I am absolutely unbothered

Yards per carry is down
Yards per pass attempt are up

Much of that is because most opponents are focusing on the run

As DH and company continue to shred, defenses will adjust

Or not

I really don’t care which poison they pick

Dead is dead

How many yards did OSU just rack up off screen passes?

Those are zero sum, you take one thing away-they exploit what you leave vulnerable yards.

If anyone is wringing their hands over rushing yards just add the short passing yardage to it and see if it makes you feel any better (because it's the same thing).

My only concern, as I have said all summer, is if/when they get into a game where the weather does what the defense cannot and takes away the pass. In that scenario OSU is in trouble because they cannot run when it's 10 v 11.

And as we saw in the CFP, calling OU's defense last year competent was being generous.

Honestly the passing stats are inaccurate because Haskins didn't see the 2nd half in 3 of those games. OSU had 2 tough opponents in 18 as opposed to 1 in 17 through 5 games. Barrett was in the entire game on 4 of those games. If you leave Haskins in the 2nd half of some of these games with the running game not performing as well as last year he'd have 450+ passing yards in a couple of those games.

Alright football heads- I get the numbers problem in the run game. I'm happy to trust Haskins accuracy and ball placement to continue terrorizing the quick screens and mesh routes against 1 on 1 coverage, it's just as good as a run really.

But, is there absolutely nothing that can be done in the run game? If there are numbers in the box, they almost have to be unbalanced somewhere (doubt we're seeing 4-4 stuff). My question/suggestion are counters and pulls that get lineman or a TE coming across to run away from the numbers. I almost wonder how McCall/scat back would do here. The QB Read/RB dive play is dead this year. The Bucks are not running straight up the middle for any success- hard to accept but I get it. I'm in love with this passing offense and not ready to see it go so soon anyway.

I'd just like some comfort in the Buckeye run offense should they need to slow a game down or win a game. Hopeful there's something that can be evolved to get some success.

There is plenty you can do and they were doing them.

Keeping things in perspective, OSU converted at least 2-3 short runs on 3rd/4th down prior to the back to back plays where they were stuffed.

On both of those runs that were stuffed, Jordan missed a block. It happens, it wasn't a great game for lots of guys.

There is no, imo, lack of talent or consistent execution by this OL. Can they always be getting better? Of Course. Will every coach in the history of football always want more push or challenge his OL to be tough? Undoubtedly.

OSU does not have a systemic OL problem in my opinion.
