2018 tOSU Offense Discussion

Which is why I'd like to see us go 4 wide with very wide splits. No need to do the whole "what don't you get" either this is all just fun and an opinion.

My whole thing is put 4 WRs and spread them out wide forcing them to go smaller and forcing them OUT OF THE BOX
I understand this is for fun but 4 WRs forces no one out of the box. Why would it? Just because a player is shorter and a little faster does not mean you take people out of the box.

Rather run into a base defense? Or a team in nickel? Or with four DB's on the field?

Would love to see the wide receivers tape wide splits, put four receivers on the field, and let the defense decide if they still want to stack the box.

Haskins is just so good and I really think if we put more receivers on the field it will either enhance Dwayne even more or it will help the running game.

I know it won't happen... but its fun to imagine!

Edited: also when you stretch your formation out I firmly believe it allows the QB to see where the pressure is going to come from. With our tight splits and tight bunch IMO it allows a defense to "hover" near the LOS and disguise their blitzes

The defense only needs to bring down one safety to stack the box, regardless of offensive formation.

You can re-equate the numbers with a running QB, but we don't have that.

There are things you can do to get numbers at the point of attack, but then you need a tighter formation and more blockers to move around.

4 wide sets AND a traditional QB really limits playcalling diversity in the run game. It turns us into an air raid offense.

If you want to empty the box, you have to be good enough at other things to make the opponent think they have a better chance of winning with 2 deep safeties vs 1.

My concern mostly revolves around our short yardage run game. We just can't seem to get a consistent push. If we can take care of of our short yardage struggles I'll be happy.

My other concern is penalties. Way to many penalties. They are stalling drives and hamstringing the Offense.

Having said that, this is a prolific Offense. The passing game is the best I've seen in over 50 years of Buckeye football. Enjoy it while you can because it probably won't be that way for years to come, unless DH returns.

If teams don't match the formation itll be easy pitch and catch out wide that's why.

You cant load the box then also successfully have numbers out wide too.

Paris and KJ can catch 8/game for all I care. Love having the ball in their hands.

It’s different from 70 years of Ohio State football (running), but it works in my book. I love this passing O.

It's the original premise behind teams going to the spread really.

Lower level teams didn't have the talent to bang away in the trenches with an OSU so they found a way to make the running game happen outside of the box between 2-3 blockers and 2-3 defenders while a skilled athlete had the ball in space. All you really need is 1 skilled guy and 2-3 WR body types who are good blockers. Damn near anyone could find those.

It accomplished three things:
  1. It leveled the playing field for the smaller schools and changed the way CFB is played (no more I formation)
  2. It made WR screens just an extension of the running game
  3. It gave Herbie a go to catch phrase he's been beating to death since the mid 90's.

My Herbie opinion is this Ohio State side does very well in space and we should enjoy it.

(Because they’re probably buttoning it right back up to Martell keepers next year- which Urban has also won with).

The run threat QB that can pass just a smidge better than JT Barrett is/would be lethal.

My full opinion is I love Haskins at QB. I haven’t seen this offensive style in my lifetime. It fits what I’ve always wanted- 20 athletes on the roster, lets have an accurate distributor that gets them the ball until the other team quits.

Modern football and the Buckeyes are elite at it. Finally.

Like say, shred them with quick WR screens?
I loved going to BWI after we screened them to death in the 2nd half and hearing them complain about their coaching staff not being able to stop the screens.....as if it would be possible to blitz from all over the field at a 70% rate and also cover screen passes.

For those of you who can stomach it I'm sure it was entertaining.

To be fair though, we have our share of people with about that level of X-and-O understanding of the game, and in a few cases they talk about Xs and Os as much as anyone.
