2018 tOSU Offense Discussion

Didn't want to muck up Haskins thread but felt the need to make a point.

Dobbins is currently averaging 4.7YPC
Webbs is currently averaging 5.7 YPC

We currently have 882 yards rushing between the two. Keep in mind we are at the half way point of the season.
If that was one running back doing all the damage on pace for nearly 1800 yards, not a single soul here would be claiming that our running game needs to "get going".

To arrive at said point. The running game is fine. It is exactly what it needs to be - effective. We aren't relying solely on our backs to carry the offense ala Zeke' at times. Right now, if anything, the offense
is running (and humming) through Haskins and the ground attack is the great compliment to his passing that we require. This is the type of offensive output from the QB position we expected from Pryor most of his
career. Instead even throughout his junior year (2010) we were a team that based everything off hanging our hat on the running game. That doesn't appear to be the case right now. Sure, I have no doubt we could line up and pound the ball 40+ times a game. But the QB'ing we're getting this season allows us to open up things in a way we haven't had since 2006.

You know what his also helps with? Future QB recruiting. Want to land some elite passing prospects? Be a team that develops elite passers and sends a few to the NFL like Haskins will be doing eventually.
Great post and I never looked at it that way so I'll shut up about it.

Even better point about the recruiting... IMO we won't win it all with a run first QB and we've got to be able to throw the ball well to win it all. So what Dwayne is doing will really go a long ways in helping us secure that next QB who can throw the ball.

OHIO STATE HELD UNDER 100 YARDS RUSHING FOR JUST THE THIRD TIME IN THE URBAN MEYER ERA AS RUNNING GAME TRENDS DOWNWARD

97650_h.jpg

Ohio State moved to 7–0 today after beating Minnesota, 30-14, and has a passing attack that Buckeye fans have long pined for, but it may be time to sound the alarm on the team's running game.

With just 92 yards on 32 attempts, the Bucks finished under 100 yards rushing in a game for the first time since losing 31-0 to Clemson in the 2017 College Football Playoff semifinal.

The 92 yards against Minnesota today marked only the third time an Ohio State team under Urban Meyer did not crack 100-yards on the ground. In 2015, the Buckeyes rushed for just 86 yards on the way to a 17-14 loss to No. 9 Michigan State, ending a perfect year. A season later, Clemson would hold the Buckeyes to just 88 yards.

Ohio State got the win today, but the rushing attack has been on a downward trend all season long.

After running for 782 yards on 5.02 yards per carry in the first three games of the season, Ohio State has struggled in the last month, rushing 155 times for just 516 yards in wins over Tulane, Penn State, Indiana and Minnesota.

Amazingly, the team's yards per attempt has gone down in each game, from the high of 7.08 yards per carry against Oregon State in the opener to just 2.88 per tote against the Golden Gophers Saturday.

Give me the interior of UW and Iowa our interior looks like three left tackles playing guard and center.
At this point, it wouldn't matter who's OL we replace ours with. Our OL is every bit as talented as there's, it may come down to coaching, determination and hunger, IMO

And I wonder how far off Taylor is from getting back on the field, because it doesn't seem like the Jordan experiment is working, and neither has the Pridgeon experiment. No matter how much we thought he'd be good since he was a high rated JUCO, he just isn't very good at all, and is a backup at best. And Jordan at C just shows how valuable Elflein and Price were, as he's not a good C, and his best position is at G(LG). Hell, I wonder how bad Myers could be at C at this point...
And I also wonder how far along Bowen is, because I would much rather him at RG than Knox at this point, IDK how many more penalties Knox can continue to hurt this team with. He's not very disciplined, and has continually cost this team valuable yards at inopportune times
And my heart goes out to Prince, as the guy isn't good at smaller, faster DEs. A 3-4 team with blitzing LBs will destroy him, he's a big lumbering guy. Though he's athletic, he just can't keep up with the smaller pass rushers

2nd Quarter. Stuffed on 4th & 1

who could have seen this coming?

OSU: 7 blockers + man in motion = 8 and a runner
Miny: 9 defenders within 3 yards of the LOS

Individuals can always block better but 9>8

IMO, Meyer is trying to force the running game too much. The reality of the situation this year is that the odds are better with no backs and throwing/scramble for the yard.

P.S. Haskins needs to learn how to actually fucking slide or he is going to break an arm/wrist on a non contact play. It's just like little kids who are afraid to slide in little league baseball, they end of getting hurt because the slide is so bad.

First run of the 2nd half. People start booing of course.

Count 'em up and tell me what you expected.

7 > 5

a play action slant to either of those slot receivers after the LB's come flying in to stop the run is wide open and an easy pitch and catch.

I am seriously starting to wonder if Meyer is getting back involved in the playcalling and making them run in situations like this?

Shit just run 4 vert.... those LBs stand no chance. 4dbs vs 4 wrs.... no respect.

I do wonder whats happened to playcalling since Urban returned. But it's a conversation that has no easy answers.
Please just give the keys to Wilson and Day.

Probably. Wouldn't be surprised unfortunately. Glad you pointed this out because it's easy to miss in-game. This kills drives and if teams are willing to give us the slant they should have to option to audible into it.

No way to know for sure, but Meyer is probably so uncomfortable with the idea of not rushing for 200 ypg that he doesn't know what to do and is trying to force it into existence. It's really mucking up drives though.

Its interesting to see what's been mentioned in the previous few posts about forcing the run. I believe last year and the one before, we FORCED the long ball, but everyone knew that that was Barrett's weakness, but Meyer wanted to do something to balance out the offense, even if that was the weakest part of his QB's game. It seems like in his quest to have the most balanced offense in CFB, he sometimes forces the issue instead of letting his offense play to their strengths. The OSU offense in 2018 is a spread pass first team, who should occasionally run. Its just the facts, teams are literally putting their entire defense up front to stop the run, and yet we still try and run, and bad teams are able to sniff that out. In all of the examples provided by @Jaxbuck , a simple slant or screen pass would yield big yards, yet our offense runs right into the defense's strength. Haskins is clearly one of the(if not the) best QBs in the country, and we should relish that, make the pass dictate the run. Force teams to back off the LOS, and if they don't, then let Haskins continue to throw for 400+yds and multiple TDs. I don't think anyone would have a problem with an undefeated OSU team who is top 3 in the nation in passing yards, TDs, and completion %, at the sake of losing a lot in the rushing department, if they know that that was the offense' identity. If that means that OSU resembles a Big 12 offense for a year, than so be it. I rather that, than a half as$ attempt at forcing a running game that isn't effective and everyone sees coming.

nobody would have a problem with running it 70% of the time if opponents couldn't stop it

You make the conscious decision to start a zero run threat QB so why be so concerned when his generational passing talent can give you a 70% success rate when he passes?

Pick something and do it excellently, ruthlessly. Quit worrying about what can go wrong.Make things go wrong for your opponent.

Well, if I recollect, and one famous Ohio State coach said, "only three things happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad". OK, taking that in context, that is a 33% "Good" factor. Given that Haskins is at a 70+%, that is over twice the original assertion. That's pretty darn good in my book...….Go Buckeyes. Please work things out before the Michigan game.....Go Bucks!
