2018 tOSU Offense Discussion

Ah not sure Alabama is quite as unbalanced as Georgia but yes like Bama too..

I just don't like hearing about having a goal in mind for 250 and 250. Just do what works and then work off that.

Do what we do well and it'll normally work out. Stray from it and we will struggle

So, what happens if “what we do well” all of a sudden is a crap-ton of passing?

For those watching the NC, the Bama offense looks eerily like the osu offense the past few years. I feel like Hurts has slipped on a #16 jersey

Georgia has 126 yards passing and 97 yards rushing at halftime. Seems pretty effective and balanced to me.
QB scramble was one of their biggest runs, the others were third down runs. I don't know how you can watch that game and think UGA is not throwing the ball more than running it, especially on first down. They are not lining up trying to run off tackle.

OHIO STATE'S 2018 OFFENSE SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF PLAYMAKERS

90236_h.jpg

We don’t yet know who Ohio State’s starting quarterback will be in 2018, but we do know that he should have plenty of talent around him to work with.

With Mike Weber, Parris Campbell and Johnnie Dixon all indicating in the past week that they will be staying in Columbus instead of declaring for the 2018 NFL draft, Ohio State is set to return its entire stable of running backs and at least four of its top six receivers from last season.

And while Ohio State might need more from its returning runners and pass-catchers this season for its offense to operate at a truly elite level, the 2018 Buckeyes will also have plenty of young up-and-coming talent ready to push the returning players for playing time.

While Weber was surpassed on the depth chart this past season by J.K. Dobbins, forcing him to play second fiddle to the Buckeyes’ breakout star running back, the return of Weber for 2018 is still a big coup for Ohio State’s offense. When Weber was at his best this past season – notably against Michigan State and Illinois, when he ripped off back-to-back games with 100 or more rushing yards and two touchdowns each, including three total touchdowns of 40-plus yards – the Buckeyes had a true two-headed monster at the running back position.

Dobbins, who the Buckeyes have the luxury of having for at least two more years, has already emerged as the team’s best offensive playmaker. Having already proven himself to be an electric and consistent runner, carrying the ball for 1,403 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman, Dobbins could truly emerge as one of college football’s best running backs in 2018 if he can become more of a difference-maker as a receiver out of the backfield.

The breakaway speed that Weber showed on his big-play runs in 2017, however, shows the kind of weapon he could be in tandem with Dobbins if he can stay fully healthy after being plagued by a hamstring injury for the first half of this past season.

The return of Mike Weber, in tandem with J.K. Dobbins, gives Ohio State a strong one-two punch at running back.

Campbell and Dixon, meanwhile, return as Ohio State’s top two big-play threats in the receiving game this past season. While the Buckeyes will be looking for more consistency from both as downfield receivers, both showed plenty of ability to make game-changing plays in their redshirt junior years.

Off-season excitement is already overflowing. While we are often left simply throwing out empty names, this off-season talk actually has production to their credit. We know how good these guys are, have been and could/should be. Not even entertaining what any freshman may bring (Gill?).

Dobbins, Weber, McCall
Mack, Victor, KJ Hill, McLaurin, Campbell, Dixon
Berry

I'm of the opinion Haskins is the run-away starter, but each passing day and story about Martell makes me believe he will be a factor on the field in some capacity. However, it would be criminal if this offense stays in first-gear wasting any number of QB carries over, say 5-10? This will/should not be the JT Barrett offense. Whole off-season should be developing a plan to run as many plays as possible to distribute touches to this talent. I want to see Wilson's offense unleashed.

Some minor questions at QB, TE and a couple OL spots, but nothing alarming in my opinion. This offense should go supernova on everyone.

Georgia!? Saban and Bama have built a dynasty doing just that. And Wisconsin has done a poor man's version of it for years. Wisconsin is like a Toyota Camry and Bama is the Lexus LS. Osu can certainly fit their offense to the same strengths, and honestly should've done that this year after the OU loss. I'd put Dobbins and Weber up against any tandem of RBs in the country, and I'd put this year's O line in the same vein. Next year's shouldn't fall off much in the run game and that should only help the next QB starter (I'm personally hoping for Haskins)

So they're slow, rarely win races, and only implement technology 5 years after everyone else ? I mean that car is like 80k and still can't get to 60 under 5 seconds.
I guess in a way that describes 3yds and a cloud of dust mentality... but doesn't sound like a winner.

Zone6 hasn't produced last 2 years... this article sums it up pretty well, and nothing has changed with the absence of Noah Brown.
I guess we'll find out if it was a JT thing or a Zone6 thing. But as much as people are excited to turn over a new leaf at QB, can't lie... I was hoping we'd seen seniority in WR room go to guys like Mack, Victor, Hill, and Jaylen... I suppose with loss of Grimes it helps in depth though.

If the O Line can gel and the QB can orchestrate an up tempo pace we could see an offense that puts a hurting on some people. A true 50/50 run pass split solid in each. If Haskins wins the job and JK and Mikey step up as they should coupled with various options at the H...........wow.

Rather than relying on JT's legs to keep the D honest I hope we see the team speed just flat wear some teams out.

I can't stress enough how much a QB consistently hitting the down field passes will open up the run game and create more space for H centered plays. If it all comes together...........look out.

That car sure looked like a winner the other night... And they don't need to implement technology when their quality never wavers and is always at the top. We can even substitute cars, but Bama is the big luxury vehicle, not a flashy sports car. And it works

Wilson had teams like that in 2007 and 2008 but the QB barely ran the ball. I doubt that Urban will ever run an offense that doesn't utilize the legs of the QB to an extent. But the strength of the offense should be the legs of Dobbins, Weber and the list of guys at HB. Too much talent on this team to have to rely solely on the QB, or any 1 player for that matter.

That's how I see it too... The thing about spreading the ball out and not relying on the QB run is eventually it just makes everyone better. If Dobbins/Weber gets going it'll only help the throwing game as teams start to creep up, and likewise if teams back off it'll open up everything underneath.
