Maybe they are saving their adjustments to the defense being able to stop short yardage runs b/c they know the QB won't run? Meyer reiterated today this is why they are having trouble converting short yardage. What am I missing here? Having the threat of a running QB is not the only way to convert short yardage. The staff knew coming into the year they didn't have a running QB. Why are we going to week 8 with this problem?

Unfortunately kind of reminds me when teams played the bear front and there were seemingly no adjustments we could make. It was like oh well we are just SOL let's hope we execute our regular plays well

Unfortunately [this season's lack of a running game and lack of adjustments to defensive alignments) kind of reminds me when teams played the bear front [in 2014] and there were seemingly no adjustments we could make. It was like oh well we are just SOL let's hope we execute our regular plays well
That's not how I remember 2014. After the first two games (loss to VTech being in week 2, after a weak offensive performance against Navy in week 1) the offense, and especially the running game, was consistently dominant, regardless of the bear front that most opponents tried to use at times. The only exception was late October at Penn State, when Barrett was visibly limping. The thing holding that team back was defense, especially rushing defense, which was particularly bad in November. Once they brought the defense up in December to the level that the offense had been playing at for 2+ months, they were championship caliber.

Rewatched the game...

1. RBs do not run downhill enough and IMO we could use a little DAVE in our approach. There was a lot of missed opportunity for another 2-3 yards that they just straight up passed on hoping for a bigger play.

2. Our red zone struggles stem specifically from not being able to run the ball. You fix the run to be serviceable (150-175 a game) and we also become better in the red zone.

3. Prince needs to shake it off. He's been great all year but everything snow balled on him again last Saturday. Beat for 2 sacks and also had a holding on what would have been a sack. Then he pops off on twitter after the game to make it all worse. Settle down big guy you've been great so just shake things off.

4. I turned away on that long field goal and said "i cant watch he misses everything over 50". My wife assured me we would make it and go figure he made it. Well come to find out it was Blake kicking all game and not Sean. Blake should be given a shot to take over because hitting a 47 yarder is huge.

Overall amazing job from Haskins and the WRs. If we just can get back to 150 yards or more rushing we will be just fine. Fix the run game and it fixes more or less all our other issues. Every issue we have on offense stems from the lack of a run game. Confident we will get it figured out.

Edited: watching the end of the game and running downhill with Weber looked like what this offense needs from its rush game. Go figure it also allowed us to go play action for our last TD to Hill. Coincidence? I think not.

I have been meaning to ask this question of someone who knows something about pass protection by a OT. When I was watching the game, it seemed like the guy across from Prince was just speed rushing past him and not going directly at Haskins. It almost looked like Haskins was moving up into trouble to get away from the guy Prince was trying to block past him. It looked bad for Prince but I do not think it was entirely all his fault. It also would have been nice if they would have helped him with a TE next to him or at least a man in motion to the right side. I really have no idea but I felt bad for Prince the way the announcers were bad mouthing him and I do not think it was entirely his fault but really have no idea.

I watched it again as well and the speed rush was coming from way outside all afternoon. Prince was just struggling to get out that far. Prince did an ok job most of the game just pushing him a little wider and if he does get his hands on him and manage to push him wider, I think it's DH's job to step up in the pocket and the pass rush goes right by. Prince recovered well once beaten (most plays) just looked really bad on back to back plays (sack and holding). Big fella just needs to keep his cool. Haskins had an excessively deep drop on many of those passing plays and had room to step up, bye some time, go through his progressions, reset his feet, and still make an accurate throw. Pass pro hasn't been an issue this year, it's been the lack of success in short yardage run situations and the inability to blow DL's off the ball and dominate the line of scrimmage, like in years past. And let's face it, DH's ability to avoid the rush and get out of trouble has not been stellar thus far. I think we over-valued his ability to run/scramble.

If an OT is having problems with a speed rusher you can run a screen which didnt happen. Or you can give him some help by bringing over a TE or sending a RB to chip him. I don't believe those things happened either.

As for Prince's struggles... Dwayne needs to feel that and step up more too though. If an end is going to take that sort of wide route to the QB then Dwayne has to step up more into the pocket.

Or we need to chip him or screen him.

Prince needs to slow him down more but Haskins could have helped him out more too

especially as wide as he was pulling Prince out. That is difficult for any OT if the QB doesn't step up. DH doesn't have to step directly up into the pocket and into more bodies. I don't know the proper QB footwork terminology but a step up and a slide step and he avoids that speed rush altogether. Due to the defenders angle and speed, a little push wider and he should essentially take himself right out of the play if DH recognizes it. DH needs to feel that and adjust if they continue to attack Prince that way the entire game and if teams continue to attack him the same way going forward. Seems like a simple fix and one they could exploit with the DE leaving such a gaping hole behind.

Ohio State Running Game Needs a Change in Attitude

J.K.-Dobbins-Running-Minnesota.jpg

In Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Buckeyes did something they haven’t done in a decade — they won a game while averaging fewer than three yards per rush.

It was only the seventh time it has happened in the last 10 years. And their record now improves to 1-6 in such games.

That isn’t the only rarity the Ohio State running game has accomplished this season. They have been held under 200 yards rushing five games in a row now, which hasn’t happened since 2004 when the Buckeyes were starting Lydell Ross in the backfield.

So what’s the problem this year? With two 1,000-yard tailbacks carrying the load, it isn’t a talent issue. Losing J.T. Barrett’s ability to run is apparently very significant, but according to offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson there are more pertinent problems at the moment.

“Staying on blocks,” Wilson said after the Minnesota game. “You can scheme it up and you can talk about pressures, movements, and you can talk about being outnumbered, but still running the ball is a little bit of an attitude. So I think to be as good as we need to be, we’ve got to find what we’re going to hang our hat on.

“We keep doing a lot of formations, so we get a lot of plays and we get a little bit of pop in here and there, versus getting some rhythm and getting some consistency. It’s a talented group of linemen. We’ve got some backs. And we’ve got to tighten it up to be the team we want to be.”

Even though the Buckeyes are leading the Big Ten in total offense (556.9 yards) by nearly 50 yards, it’s the OSU passing game that is carrying the bulk of the workload. Ohio State has passed for 2,600 yards and rushed for 1,298 this season, which puts them No. 1 overall in passing, but No. 7 in rushing.

There is a concern that perhaps the offensive line has become passive both literally and figuratively.

“I don’t know if that’s the mentality, but the concern always is on the really good teams no matter if you run the ball or throw the ball, is physical,” Wilson said. “And if you’re going to be a throw team – and I knew from years and years and years ago and we’d go against Texas Tech every year and everyone thought Mike Leach threw the ball a lot – and he did, but his really, really good teams were very, very, very physical. And as we go, whether we’re running first or whatever, we have to maintain a physical presence as an offense to be a high-end championship type of team.”

The OC (I mean not OC) is placing the lack of running back production directly on the offensive line.

And for good reason.

Not sure how we got here. I know how we ended up where we were in 2016. It was Warinner project after Warinner project that left Ohio’s state with one quasi-serviceable backup against Clemson. Inherited mess. Studrawa was supposed to fix the numbers problem and talent problem, and he has. But they’ve definitely lost skill and ability.

The NFL isn’t calling up and asking for Ohio State offensive lineman outside of the highly regarded center position. Who’s the last guard or tackle to get a high draft grade? Taylor Decker? That was 2015. Jamarcus Jones went 5th round. We’ve constantly shuffled our best guards to center.

Is it the guys? Is it their positions? I hate to ask questions that we asked when Bollman was in charge of the line, but these are relevant questions. Highly rated guys not developing and lower rated guys winning the jobs, but why?

There’s some talented backs on this team. I do think partial responsibility falls on the RBs for not fighting for yardage like they had in years past, but can you blame them after 7 games of not getting space? It would be one thing if Weber was at 6 ypc and Dobbins was at 3. I think Dobbins is NFL talent after next year, and I think Weber is borderline. You have a star at QB, stars at RB, and a veteran receiver group. There’s an area to be concerned about.

Hopefully BGSU is keeping an eye on Studrawa. Coaching changes don’t always work out (see:Beck) but they usually work themselves out (see:Wilson).

I don't think this is it at all. Most of the positive yards we do get is because Webber or Dobbins made someone miss or they just ran someone over. I've seen maybe a handful of free holes for them to run through this year. Not sure if it's scheme or the o-line, probably a little of both, but the backs are the last place I'd lay blame on. Webber fighting for that 4th and 2 he probably didn't get was a microcosm of what the backs have had to put up with all year.
