2018 tOSU Offense Discussion

Something I've wondered about is what Dwayne is responsible for regarding changing plays at the line. Is that something they've put on him or is that more from the sidelines? Just wondering if perhaps he isn't as good at recognizing defenses and making the proper changes?

I think Dwayne makes things more challenging, but I think the 2013 OL would have this offense resembling Bama 2018.

Yup. We had rushing problems early in 2015 too with Cardale. Going back to JT was a bandaid for that more than anything. The receivers and Haskins have covered it up this year, but now that the weather is turning we're going to have to find a way to run the football if we want to accomplish anything.

almost any QB that can count to 6, at any level of play, has the ability to change the play based on what he sees pre snap

When Haskins came in for Barrett in the Michigan game last year the line was blowing open massive holes for dobbins and then Weber had that run he bounced to the outside and scored. Honestly this line doesn’t play with the same chip on there shoulder as last year! Losing Price and Jones, moving Jordan to center, and still not having Bowen back have all been set backs to this offensive line unit!

I think this is very similar to what is going on with parts of the defense, at a place like OSU the mantra is next man up/reload. Well that is all fine and good but sometimes the next man up just isn't as good as the guy who left. They can't all be 1st team All American/first round draft picks.

In general I think that is what we are seeing with this 2018 team. For the first time in the Meyer era the attrition has really worn them down to the point where they are going into battle with several guys who just aren't ready yet or aren't where the coaches would like them to be at least.

The offensive line has 3 seniors and a junior who is a 3 year starter. Either that's bad coaching or bad recruiting because those guys should be ready

I understand the line isn't winning the line of scrimmage in the run game but I don't understand the lack of commitment and creativity in the run game. Dobbins and Weber never see the field together. They have abandon the hybrids as runners, Campbell and Kj Hill are basically pure receivers. It seems like only the run strategy is to run it up the middle.

I've been waiting for the bolded, and I can't believe we've not seen that. It doesn't really knock you down a receiver, because Dobbins has proven he has good hands and goes out wide and inside for short routes fairly often, and both are a threat when the ball is handed off.

What I do not like on both sides of the ball is the lack of imagination from week to week. You can't just line up and do the exact same fucking thing week in and week out, you are going to get out schemed and coached as we have seen. And what do we see the teams doing, SOMETHING A LITTLE different from what they have done. Every good coach throws in a new wrinkle each week. Tressel used to save a bunch of it for TTUN every damn year. I loved it. We might come out 5 wide, we might come out with two TEs, you never knew exactly but it was a wrinkle.

We see nothing new ever on either side of the ball. No new plays, no new defensive blitzes, nothing new. Same ole shit that teams save all of their own wrinkles for and they come out and kick our asses while out coaching the shit out of our guys.

The OC (I mean not OC) is placing the lack of running back production directly on the offensive line.

And for good reason.

Not sure how we got here. I know how we ended up where we were in 2016. It was Warinner project after Warinner project that left Ohio’s state with one quasi-serviceable backup against Clemson. Inherited mess. Studrawa was supposed to fix the numbers problem and talent problem, and he has. But they’ve definitely lost skill and ability.

The NFL isn’t calling up and asking for Ohio State offensive lineman outside of the highly regarded center position. Who’s the last guard or tackle to get a high draft grade? Taylor Decker? That was 2015. Jamarcus Jones went 5th round. We’ve constantly shuffled our best guards to center.

Is it the guys? Is it their positions? I hate to ask questions that we asked when Bollman was in charge of the line, but these are relevant questions. Highly rated guys not developing and lower rated guys winning the jobs, but why?

There’s some talented backs on this team. I do think partial responsibility falls on the RBs for not fighting for yardage like they had in years past, but can you blame them after 7 games of not getting space? It would be one thing if Weber was at 6 ypc and Dobbins was at 3. I think Dobbins is NFL talent after next year, and I think Weber is borderline. You have a star at QB, stars at RB, and a veteran receiver group. There’s an area to be concerned about.

Hopefully BGSU is keeping an eye on Studrawa. Coaching changes don’t always work out (see:Beck) but they usually work themselves out (see:Wilson).

Bumping this because I addressed my concerns earlier in the week, and those concerns were exacerbated yesterday.

At one point while this game was competitive, Ohio State was averaging 1.8 ypc.

The most frustrating thing to me is listening to Meyer talk about how they have to establish a run game... it’s exactly the same as when we would lose with Barrett having 25 carries and the RB having 8 carries and he’d say we need to get the RBs the ball more.

If you want to do something than deemphasize the “read” aspect of the offense and just hand the fucking ball off to your running back... how is it possible that he can’t figure that out.

You can keep the “read” aspect of the offense (read option with Barrett, RPOs with Haskins), just flip it so instead of 75% of plays being read based, 25% are and you can actually set a tone with your play calling.

Everyone wants to blame Studrawa and the OL - they are obviously not performing well, but I feel like we don’t even give them a chance to set a tone and establish the run game by focusing so much on RPOs that the OL literally doesn’t even know where the ball is going on most plays.

I think it has something to do with the over commitment to the WRs. It's crazy that we rotate 7 WRs. 2 of them are considered "hybrids" but they don't have any characteristics of a normal hybrid.

If we move towards a more balanced attack the staff would have to make some hard choices with the WR group and it doesn't seem like they are willing to do that. Demario McCall seems like he is perfectly built to be one of the hybrids. Dobbins could easily be used like Curtis Samuel was when Zeke was here.
