Football: Ohio State offense performs as needed in sloppy win against Michigan State

If any game described Ohio State’s history with Michigan State, it was this one.

“We knew exactly what this would be, and it was, I mean that was November football at Michigan State,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said.

From the 11 straight scoreless drives to start the game to the 24 combined rushing yards to the five total fumbles, the Buckeyes and Spartans played as scrappy a game as one could imagine.

The result was a 7-6 Ohio State lead at halftime, and from there, the No. 10 Buckeyes scored 19 unanswered to to win handedly against No. 18 Michigan State 26-6.

Meyer said this win felt different than previous ones.

“That was a big win, and we’re very satisfied, and I agree with you, the other ones you kind of have, people didn’t feel like they won,” Meyer said. “That was a great locker room, that’s the way it’s supposed to be, enjoy the win and get ready for the next one.”

But the 26 points were not the result of an Ohio State offense that had all the gears turning. Instead, it was the Buckeyes’ defense. No, even more than that, it was the Spartans’ lack of productive offense that allowed Ohio State to pull away late.

Michigan State turned the ball over three times, while also giving up a safety in the second half. The two fumbles both came on costly unforced errors, and the interception occurred when redshirt junior quarterback Brian Lewerke was hit hard as he threw. The safety was an intentional move by Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio to avoid a blocked punt in his endzone.

These turnovers gave Ohio State 12 of its 26 points, and seven more came on a garbage-time run by redshirt junior running back Mike Weber with the game already in the balance.

On offense, the Buckeyes were a mixed bag.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Dwayne Haskins completed 24-of-39 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown. Haskins hit on most of his short throws, but was unable to find any of his receivers deep.

Haskins said the wind cost him on a throw to junior wide receiver K.J. Hill, and that he put too much air on deep ball to redshirt senior wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

“I let that one go, probably should have took a little bit off of that one,” Haskins said. “But otherwise than that I thought I was pretty accurate all day.”

After rushing for only 14 yards total in the first half, Ohio State got the running game going late, with 106 yards in the second half against the No. 1 rush defense in the country.

While sophomore running back J.K. Dobbins failed to gain momentum, rushing for 28 yards on 14 carries, Weber found his stride for the second-straight game, carrying the ball 22 times for 104 yards and a touchdown.

“Mike Weber ran for over 100 yards and I would have to say that, 75 percent of those are post-contact yards,” Meyer said. “He ran really, really hard, everything about that was really hard against that defense.”

SLOGGING OHIO STATE-MICHIGAN STATE GAME PROVIDES NO ANSWERS FOR BUCKEYE OFFENSE

98719_h.jpg

Ohio State knew what kind of game Saturday afternoon’s tilt against Michigan State could turn into.

Last year’s 48-3 blowout victory was an outlier. The prior six matchups between the two teams were decided by fewer than two touchdowns, and four games had a margin of victory of three or fewer points.

The 2015 game knocked the Buckeyes out of College Football Playoff contention. Ohio State beat the Spartans in 2014, then won the national championship. In 2013, Michigan State beat the Buckeyes to win the Big Ten championship. In Urban Meyer’s first game against the Spartans as Ohio State head coach, his team eked out a one-point win.

“We know exactly what this would be, and it was,” Urban Meyer said after the game. “That was November football at Michigan State.”

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins added: “They're the No. 1 rush defense in the country, 16 points per game. They gave us a tough time, but it wasn't supposed to be easy.”

The Buckeyes might have expected – and won – a 26-6 game that could be described as “November football at Michigan State,” but it’s not what they needed. They needed to get a win, of course, but they also needed to finally pair their aerial attack and run game together after months of offensive issues.

With just two regular-season games remaining and just 14 days until Ohio State takes on Michigan, time is running out.

Putting together lengthy drives and marching down the field wasn’t top of mind for the offense, though. Against a stout defense in chilly, windy conditions, Meyer focused on winning the battle for field position, while trying to score when possible.

“We always talk about the offense's job in a game like this,” Meyer said. “Get two first downs, get the ball in the midfield and let's get the ball downed inside the 10-yard line.”

I have all the answers if they wanted them....

1. Play. Tate.

Not start but at least give him 15 plays. He gives our run game a major boost.

I know you love you some Tate and think he is the answer. What you're really saying is that tOSU coaches can't devise a scheme to run when we have a prolific passing QB. Other teams can do it, but not us. We absolutely have to have a running QB to be successful at running the ball? I call bullshit. Wilson has done it wherever he has been but not here? What are we going to do with all of the passing QBs we are bringing in, always make sure we have a running QB to offset them?

I think the answer is clear that UFM needs to get out of the way of Wilson and Day, but just like you they aren't asking me.......

The much maligned running game....look at this:

#1 pre snap, it's going to be an RPO and you have a reasonable box count

upload_2018-11-11_13-1-4.png

#2 Guy in black forces run hard which is exactly what you want him to do. Superior athlete is circled in red and waiting for the ball to do some damage. His blocking is in gray out in front. Haskins should be able to see what's right in front of his face, pull it out and do said damage.

upload_2018-11-11_13-4-24.png

#3 Haskins makes an indefensibly bad read and gives the ball to the RB (red). It plays right into what the defense did (black) and ignores the haymaker (gray).

I've seen Haskins auto-give so many times this year I want to puke. When the dust settles and we get into some good off season drain circling, Haskins inability to make reads like this shouldn't get overlooked.

As near as I can tell, the coaches put the offense in a great position to succeed here and the player fucked it up.

Here is another one. MSU DL jumped off side so it was a first down anyway but you can see what the OSU coaches called and why it failed (not because of offsides).

1) Pre snap, Klatt is going on and on (rightfully so) about OSU coaches needing to be able to find a way to convert 3rd and 2 without a running QB. They dial up another RPO.

OSU slot WR in motion (red). MSU defense outnumbers you in the box 7-6 (black)

upload_2018-11-11_13-41-13.png

#2 OSU uses TE as RPO guy (red), blocking is set up 2 on 2 (gray), Haskins can clearly see and should be reading the MSU defense collapsing on the RB (black)

upload_2018-11-11_13-43-45.png

He gives it to the RB who gets tackled for a loss.

This is maddening. I have no explanation for what Haskins can possibly be seeing or thinking here.

If people want to question a pocket passer in Urbans offense maybe they should be asking the right question; can you have a non running QB who can't make the read to execute an RPO? Answer is no. You are simply fucked on any kind of short yardage play where the QB can't make this read and execute accordingly.

Still in the first half

Haskins decides to keep this one (red arrow), the read defender in black is clearly feathering and not crashing on RB (black), opportunity for RB is in gray

Hasn't made the right read to keep on a bootleg or anything else all season but he's going to keep this one??

Tells me they aren't all pre called by coaches. He is just that bad at the read.

This one looks like it's just blown up across the board. He pulls it and there are 2 guys running free a likely sack also the linebacker is on the TE and has a play. I'm not sure any of the options were getting it.

3rd is questionable cause Dobbins should be able to beat them around the corner but I think he wasn't sure there and thought he'd surprise them by pulling and running rather then pulling to throw.

It isn't blown up across the board. One defender jumped early, it's an easy read. Pull it, quick pop to TE and let the athletes do their thing with even blocking numbers. These are stills, watch it at full speed and there is no way that LB is going to keep up with that TE given the obvious 5 yard cushion.

3rd one is only questionable if you think a DE is going to catch Dobbins in that space.

This is the play after Maretll takes it to the 1. RB is stuffed for no gain. Haskins pulls it and he walks in. Neither edge defender gives him a second look.
Was screaming at the TV to leave Tate in at that point. No reason to bring Haskins back in. Could also go jumbo there....

UFM isn't staying out of the way either... so that's why I think they need to expand Tates role.
