Tate Martell, Dwayne Haskins: Frustrating Balance At Quarterback

There’s an old saying in business that a good compromise leaves everyone angry.

So perhaps it’s also true in football that a good quarterback rotation leaves everyone frustrated. If so, the Buckeyes are definitely on to something.

In the last week, head coach Urban Meyer has used the word “frustrated” to describe backup Tate Martell’s mood, and Dwayne Haskins said “it’s a little frustrating” to have to come off the field in certain situations and have Martell replace him.

It’s always a delicate juggling act to keep multiple quarterbacks happy with playing time, especially when both think they belong on the field in big moments.

Martell hasn’t spoken with the media since September, but back in the spring, he was very open about his expectations.

“I didn’t come here to sit on the bench,” he told reporters back in April.

And Martell isn’t the only one who thinks Martell should be playing more.

The Buckeyes have struggled in the red zone this season, ranking 122nd in FBS in the percentage of red zone possessions that end in points.

They’ve been inside the opponent’s 20 on 46 occasions this year. Of those, 13 have ended with rushing touchdowns, 14 with passing scores, 8 with field goals, and 12 with nothing.

For all his passing prowess, Haskins is not a serious threat to run in the red zone, which has made OSU’s offense bog down in those close quarters.

The solution seemed obvious to many: if you can’t run in the red zone without a running quarterback, then put in your running quarterback.

Saturday against Michigan State, Martell came in with the Buckeyes facing 1st-and-goal at the 6, and immediately picked up 5 yards on a counter play. Then, he jogged off the field and Haskins came back in.

The 2nd down rushing play got stuffed, but Haskins hit Parris Campbell on a little touch pass to score on the next play.

On the FOX broadcast, analyst Joel Klatt said there was a good case for the redshirt freshman to play more in the red zone.

“If you’re going to run it down there, you might as well do it with Martell. He doesn’t have to carry the ball, but watch this: you just get crashes from the outside because there’s no threat of the quarterback pulling the ball and running it on the outside (with Haskins). At least if that was Martell on the handoff, they would have to account for him in the run game,” Klatt said.

been saying what Klatt said in that last paragraph for weeks now. The running plays they run in this offense work when there is a threat of the QB pulling it and taking off.

There is no threat of that with Haskins so there is no one accounting for the QB. This leaves an unblocked man to crash down to make a play. It doesn't allow time for RB's to be patient to wait for holes, and there are no cut-back lanes bc the middle is all clogged up.

The O-line finished a lot more blocks against MSU this past weekend but it was still a sledge hammer game and took some crazy effort by the RB's just to pick up 3 yards sometimes. I understand that's football but I can't fathom how the coaches can't come up with a scheme to get guys at full speed, down hill, before they have defenders hanging on them. Not used to not seeing guys getting to the 2nd level with space to run, make a move, and chunk yards to be had.

They have... he's just on the sidelines most of the time (Tate).

No secret that our running game looked better with him.

Use each QBs strengths and play off of them. Let Tate surprise a defense by throwing the ball and also more draws/power runs on 2nd and long would work too.

IMO too many 2nd and longs turn into 3rd and longs. We arent staying ahead of the sticks.

Yeah, too many 3rd and 8's and 3rd and 11's coming up 1-2 yards short. Like BukIpower eluded to, if they don't fall behind the sticks so much on early downs, they wouldn't find themselves in 3rd and longs and obvious pass situations so frequently. You could open up the playbook with 3rd and 3-5 most years, but we are so pass heavy even those are obvious pass situations, in this offense, with a QB that isn't comfortable running the football.

No need for Tate if DH is going to keep like he did and run with a purpose. Only reason I was hoping to see him more was DH wasn't keeping enough.

His keeps really helped Dobbins IMO eventually.

Also maybe we should consider going to less of a rotation at RB? You could tell Dobbins got in a groove.
Dobbins was Gassed at the end. I don't mind one guy getting 20-25 but 38/39 is a bit much. Also finally got the deep ball going

Yeah 39 is a bit much lol... which I'm shocked we still ran the ball so much considering we were down.

You're right though... maybe 25 carries and then 10 for the back up.

I miss having a bell cow like Zeke and even Mike in 2016.

Btw didn't realize DH went for 400... thats his 4th of the season isnt it? I know its at least the third.
