MSU deserves to be considered as the clear favorite. After that then you have some arguments that can be made.
there are no good arguments for ttun, though. not as things stand right now. of course, preseason futures are mostly for shits and giggles. doubt the money that can be put down is over $100, even $50. regardless...

1. beilein... out.
2. yaklich... out.
3. #1 scorer... out.
4. #2 scorer... out.
5. #3 scorer... out.
6. new coach with no college or head-coaching experience... in.

just way too many unknowns. simpson, livers, and teske should form a solid trio, though i think simpson and teske are going to struggle unless multiple players step up as offensive generators. after those three, lots of question marks. think not having yaklich is going to have a much bigger impact than most are considering.

I wouldn't argue for UM, don't believe in betting them to win the B1G this year at all, but they were either the #2 or #3 team in the B1G last season. It looks like these odds are heavily biased towards last season. At this point, if I did a season-ending B1G power ranking for 2019, I would have ranked Purdue #1, MSU #2, and UM #3. Now obviously Purdue lost a ton and MSU is much more clearly able to pick up where they left off. UM is in a somewhat similar position to Purdue. Ever since they joined the B1G, Maryland has been a pretender when it comes to playing the big boys. OSU has to prove they can beat a team on the level of MSU before I will completely buy them as a B1G contender - a Kentucky win would certainly do that.

Personally if I wasn't betting MSU, I would opt for Purdue at 10-1 odds because they still have a lot of good players and many of those guys are experienced at performing at the highest level of college basketball & they have proven they can be a part of an excellent team. Purdue is in a better position this season compared to UM, due to more pieces to the puzzle coming back and some with clear potential to expand their role and production. But MSU is the obvious team to bet in this race.

you really think purdue at 10-1 is that much of a better play than, say, osu at 8-1? i certainly don't.

first, purdue loses so much, especially from the perspective of general schematics. they'll look nothing like last year's team. completely different identity. between edwards, cline, and eifert, purdue loses 75% of their 3-point attempts, which is saying a lot since the team was at the 90th percentile in 3-point attempts.

second, look at their schedule. most consider msu, maryland, and osu to be the 3 top teams heading into the season. purdue plays each team only once, with no home game versus maryland or osu.

third, purdue lost assistant coach greg gary, who served under painter for almost a decade. ask any purdue basketball fan and he'll tell you that this is a major loss. he was the mastermind behind their offense. gary was pretty much painter's version of beilein's yaklich, except on the other side of the court.

finally, i'm reminded of the 6 seasons prior to carsen edwards:

edit: the funny thing is, if painter instead coached at osu and had that record, he would have been fired after the 2013-14 season.

The Buckeyes were picked third in the Big Ten, behind Michigan State and Maryland, in the unofficial preseason Big Ten poll compiled by The Athletic and the Columbus Dispatch. The voters also picked point guard DJ Carton to become the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and center Kaleb Wesson as a first-team All-Big Ten honoree.

Michigan State earned 27 of the 28 possible first-place votes, with Maryland picking up the straggling first-place vote. Per The Athletic, Ohio State was voted to finish as high as second and as low as fifth in the Big Ten. Purdue and Michigan rounded out the top five at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

no postseason first-teamers from the same team last season.

edit: or 2018.

It is very hard to get multiple first-teamers in a 14-team conference. It was a lot easier with 11 league teams. I would say MSU is most likely to end up with 2. Winston is practically a lock, and people in the media are going to respect Tillman more now that he is not sharing the frontcourt spotlight with Ward at all.

between winston, tillman, and a healthy langford, it's very easy to see msu getting two players on the first team.

lots of good interior players this year. wesson, tillman, trevion williams, jalen smith, teske, garza, and giorgi. think cockburn is also going to impress. jackson-davis will get every opportunity to prove himself.

keeping it close to home, my (very) dark horse for first team is muhammad. definitely think second or third team is in his sights.
