2019-2020 College Basketball Discussion (Official Thread)

Florida Senate proclaims Florida State national champion

The Florida State Seminoles are the national champions -- at least in the eyes of the state Senate.

The coronavirus outbreak put an end to the NCAA men's basketball tournament before it could begin, prompting state Sen. Joe Gruters to introduce a resolution Thursday proclaiming the Noles "champions by default."

Lawmakers voted 37-2 to pass the resolution late Friday.

Florida State went 26-5 and won the first Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title in school history. The Seminoles were No. 4 in the most recent AP and coaches polls.

Gruters, a Republican who represents Sarasota County and part of Charlotte County, received his bachelor's degree from FSU in 1999 and served on the university's board of trustees from 2011 to 2016.

He wrote in the resolution that the Seminoles "were favored to challenge the top seeds in the national tournament and take home the national title" and highlighted the "tremendous skill on the court and the heart and spirit shown by the players and coaches."

I really question why the NCAA thought it necessary to cancel the NCAAT altogether. Why couldn't it simply be postponed for, say, two months until May? By then the pandemic may well be under control.

Hell, if it happened in July or August there would still be plenty of interest. Just don't understand their logic.

multiple programs canceled all practices before the ncaa even put its foot down. multiple athletic departments canceled all sports through the end of the academic year. there is just no way that you can run a 68-team tournament a couple months from now when everything is in flux like this.

anyway, i think we're going to understand quite soon what so many doctors and epidemiologists have warned is on the way. we'll then understand that the cancellation was the only sensible decision.

on one hand, it would be nice to see where we would have ended up and what our path would have been. on the other hand, it's already painful enough that we lost the tournament. the coulda/shoulda/wouldas would only make it worse.

anyway, i think the best reason for releasing a bracket is to give teams like rutgers, dayton, and the qualifying low-majors something concrete to celebrate.

I posted about that the other day. Dayton was about to be a one-seed. When is that going to happen again?

What could've been an historic season for the Flyers got flushed away, and that opportunity - for those players - is lost forever.

This whole thing sucks.
