2019-2020 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

carton's transfer was understandable.

gaffney's transfer was mostly understandable.

muhammad's transfer reeks of an underlying problem.

The problem is he wants a role that can't be guaranteed. He saw it getting harder, not easier, for him to showcase offense with the additions of Sueing and Towns and possibly the staff might be closing on one of their transfer guard targets. And we know there was some issue with Luther and Duane when they got suspended. This is not totally out of the blue, though it is surprising.

Honestly, we have to get used to this new reality with college ball. I think Luther might already have some expectancy on his part that the sit one rule is getting axed this summer.

I am thankful that our staff seems adept at shopping the transfer market because that is becoming more and more necessary, every off-season. I said it before, but how a staff recruits transfers is going to become at least as important as how they recruit HS players.

I disagree.

Muhammad is looking for a role that his skill set doesn't justify his getting here at Ohio State. I'm not convinced that the degree of turnover we're seeing is, overall, particularly negative. Certainly I've seen no evidence of a lack of chemistry or esprit de corps during Holtmann's tenure, and that's the proof in the pudding IMO.

The only potential issue I see is perhaps mediocre skill development, but I'm not ready to draw a conclusion on that one yet.

my wording could have been better. what i was referring to is that loading the roster and over-signing can create turbulence. ho1tmann stressed this very point immediately after being hired. he stated that having 11 or 12 players on scholarship is conducive to positive morale and fewer internal issues.

would muhammad have transferred if the wing position weren't so congested? maybe. maybe not. i'm not saying that having all these wings has been a poor decision by ho1tmann, but coach's owns words might have portended today's announcement.

That is certainly a fair point, Buckguy. I think the reality has been that Holt has not been happy enough with his roster projection as it stood and felt the need to add guys with certain skills that were missing or would be missing. And every season we see why Holt felt that way.

All in all, I am glad Holt added Sueing and Towns because it seems to have helped Luther realize he wasn't going to get the type of focal offensive role that, frankly, I don't think he is capable of having at this level. But I am glad he can pursue that now somewhere else instead of being disgruntled here another year or two and trying to force things.

Seems strange or maybe it is just a coincidence but Muhammed announces that he is leaving the program and the very next day Sotos commits to the program. Coincidence:huh:
Sotos didn't announce that he had made his decision until this morning - after Luther's entry into the transfer portal. I would say Luther's departure made OSU more attractive to Sotos for sure.

And that brings us to Muhammad. When news broke that he, too, was leaving, Ohio State fans’ collective heads all went like this:

Muhammad played in a combined 64 games between his freshman and sophomore years, 56 of them as a starter. With very little guard depth on the team next season, Muhammad had a path to end up as a potential four-year starter at Ohio State, something you don’t see all that often in college.
