2019 Spring Practices, Game, and Tidbits

Thoughts on the Spring Game:
Once again Crisman was the star of the game.
Wilson is the real deal.
Gardiner showed flashes.
Crowley looked good.
Gill knows how to get open and has really good hands.
Victor could be our deep threat this season.
Glad to see Bowen out there. Our most versatile OL.
Impressed with Wint's play. Pleasantly surprised.
Riep also made a nice INT.
Mitchell caused a fumble, broke up a pass and did a good job.
Good to see Jackson out there making some plays.
Both QB's have a long way to go.
I know its early but QB is a concern. 4 for 12 isn't going to get it done.
Baldwin did just OK but did show some mobility.
Patch work OL didn't help much.

Overall it was great to see the men in Scarlett & Grey playing some FOOTBALL!!
GO BUCKS!!
Yeah after thinking a little more on it I am also a little more concerned with QB. I think though we just have to accept that we won't be seeing 400 yard passing games this season.

We also didn't have the majority of our OL and we were going against a very good back 7 with our defense.

For fields he had a few throws batted which may be an issue for him due to his low release. Also, they went deep too much yesterday and obviously those are low percentage plays too.

It's undeniable how good fields is running and what I hope is that they give him some early confidence throws each game.

A little confused why they gave Baldwin 30+ throws and Fields only 12?

Yeah, a lot of vertical passing.Very few crossing routes, no bubble screens, etc. Some throws were spot on but way to many were way off the mark. Receivers did a great job though getting open and catching the ball. Again, this is Spring Ball and both JF and MB are very young and raw at this point in their careers. They just need more reps and experience and that will come in time.

If I'm an opposing defense, I'm going to to approach this Buckeye team like teams did with JT...stack the box against the run and dare Fields to throw it. It will be interesting to see how fast #1 can get up to speed with reading a D. Obviously that was a strength for JT, but JT didn't throw a great deep ball which limited the offense. Fields has a bigger arm but expecting him to make all the right reads right off the bat in game 1 is unrealistic. Even if he's a great student of the game, it will take time for him to get comfortable and make those reads. Hopefully the defense steps up early in the season and allows the offense some grace.

All said, I'm incredibly excited to watch this team develop. I suspect this year's Buckeyes will look way different on both sides of the ball. But I'm expecting a lot of growing pains early on.

Is it too soon to be concerned about Coach Fickell coming into Ohio Stadium against a young QB in week 2?

Was it too soon for people to worry about playing TCU's defense on the road with a young QB last year?

When it comes to Buckeye Nation and their Woody-given right to worry, there is no such thing as "too soon, too far fetched or too much."

A defense stacking the box against a group of receivers like that and a QB with a better arm that JT? Yes, please. I’m confident that he’ll pick up reading a D pretty quickly.

My guess is that we’ll see as much RPO as RO this year.
