Having the #1 scoring offense (51.00 ppg) and the #1 scoring defense (8.56 ppg) means we have the best scoring margin in the country, winning games by over 42 ppg (42.44). I haven't run all the figures, but I think no other team has a scoring margin over 40...
After today's games, Ohio State has jumped to the top spot in national scoring offense (was #3):

Despite the second and third teamers giving up two TDs in the second half, we remain #1 in the nation in scoring defense at 8.56 ppg. Next closest are Georgia (10.11 ppg) and Clemson (11.5 ppg).

going to take a guess that the gap between #1 and #2 in both scoring offense and scoring defense is bigger than any gap between consecutively ranked teams all the way down to about #125. as far as scoring margin goes, it can't be close. i bet we're 10 points ahead of #2.

in other words, osu is an all-around outlier.

The only other team that is in the top 6 in both scoring offense (45.3 ppg) and scoring defense (11.5 ppg) is Clemson, and their scoring margin is 33.8 ppg which is 8.64 ppg lower than ours.

the most comparable team of the last decade+ is 2013-14 florida state, which finished the season with a 41.8 scoring margin. other than the 48-34 boston college game and the national title versus auburn, they were beating teams on both sides of the ball like osu has. though the rutgers game should help, i doubt we finish north of 33ish with the games likely/possibly remaining on our schedule.

And that margin is only gonna go up next week.

There is no one stat to rule them all in CFB but one thing I always look for is a teams ability to get extra possessions (updated for yesterday's games):

  • OSU is #1 in offensive 3rd down conversion % with a 58.18% mark. Some context; only 7 teams of 130 are above 50%. That is 5% higher than #2 team (Bama), also worth noting that is nearly 12% better than last year.
  • OSU is #2 in defensive 3rd down conversion % with a 25.76% mark. Only 2 teams in the country are at/below 25%. Somehow, that is only 7% better than last year.
  • OSU is #5 in TO margin per game at 1.3. That is nearly a full TO per game better than last year.

I mention it because OSU was 4th best in the country coming into the game for Offensive Points per Drive (OPD) at 3.89. The new numbers haven't been updated but that isn't going to go down.

Extra possessions for an offense that uses them to actually score points, instead of just bleed clock/change field position/punt, is death for opponents.

Whats been so underrated this year is just how much playing time the back ups have got this year. This will help big time next year particularly on defense.

We haven't played in 1 close game yet and the back ups were only in the entire game once (MSU). This is enormous and will help speed up the curve big time.

Btw next years offense is going to be nasty!
My only concern with this team is the starters on D run out of gas in a 4 quarter game...

What you do all week has a lot more to do with endurance than # of plays on Saturday; and I expect they’ll rotate guys in big games and keep them fresh

And if it’s bowl/cfp you’re concerned about; behavior in December determines bowl/cfp fitness (2006: exhibit A)
