2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

bukIpower

Head Coach
Well I started the defensive thread this time last year so I figured I'd get it started.
Here's a look at what we have coming back.

DE-Young and Cooper
DT- Landers and Vincent/Togai
OLB- Harrison/Werner
MLB-Borland/Browning
CB- Wade/Okudah/Sheffield/Arnette
S- White/Fuller

Overall we have damn near everyone coming back (left out Jones as he's probably going pro, Fuller is possible too) but unless we get some things fixed that may not entirely be a good thing. LBs need addressed and so does the duo of Arnette/Sheffield.

The potential is there to be very very good but some structural things need changed IMO for it to be the case.

How about Jackson and K Jones? I think they will contribute next year. As long as we get some coaches that can find their asses with each hand we should be solid, but that is a big IF. I want to see some house cleaning after this years shit show.

I kind of hope Arnette and Sheffield declare to be honest. I’m not sure they have the ability to overcome the deficiency of getting beat consistently; maybe I’ll be proven wrong.

Really interested to see with Riep, Williamson and Tyreke Johnson bring this offseason/spring.

Huh? Neither is hyped and obviously overrated like Chlamydia was, so why would players you believe to be liabilities decide to try to go pro?

Agree Although none of our DB's overly impressed me this year. but then again neither did Werner or Tuf.

This Defense was so young this year. Apart from Jones likely early departure, we get almost all the starters and second team back. The inexperience showed up big time this season. Losing Bosa was a major hit. When he went down they not only lost the best Defensive player in CFB, they also lost their leader and no one really stepped up to replace him.
Their has to be better leadership on the field in 2019 and I just don't see where its going to come from. Hopefully someone will step up and take over that role. Especially with Jones probably leaving. Losing Coombs was also a big hit.
They will have the bowl prep and then the off season to correct the run Defense. If they can't correct that glaring problem we will have a repeat of 2018. And that will be without two number one NFL draft picks along our DL being gone.

Leaders will emerge, they always do. Boreland is still there and already a captain.

As bad as it was at points in 2018, it got better. Nu only had one long TD run, not multiple. The emergence of White at safety to help clean things up was huge imo.

Harrison also clearly emerged late in the season. The DL will be a major strength again. Okudah and Wade give you what looks like NFL caliber players at each level of the defense.

Let's see what changes happen with the staff.

Yeah same here... IMO there's absolutely no hiding the fact that Okudah and Wade are our two best corners. The secondary will be very stout if we make the tough decision to give 1 and 24 the bulk of the reps.

That says it all.. just depends.

This defense IMO can be elite next year with the right approach.
