2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

FAU began the game with 8 straight punts and one first down. That’s 7 3-and-outs, and one 6 play drive that netted 2 total yards due to a Jashon Cornell sack/forced fumble. FAU managed a FG on their last possession, their best series of the first half, which went 6 plays for 15 yards, off a fumble recovery that was already in FG range.

The defense played their base cover 3 zone with a lot of backups in the entire second half since the coaches knew FAU couldn’t beat them. There is nothing on film for Cincinnati other than 12 minutes of proof our 1s are better than their 1s.
Yes all of this. The last 2 TD drives were mostly 2s.

As you pointed out we basically played a loose cover 3 once the 2nd half hit. When we played man press it was insane how good we were.

Just disappointing we gave up 21 because that output was worthy of under 10 points

And this was also done with us missing quality depth along the DL. Cooper, Friday, Smith and Vincent were all out for the game. There was a significant drop off with pressuring the QB when Young and Cornell were not on the field. Good and needed experience for the younger guys but Young and Cornell were at an entirely different level. I think we would of been more productive in the second half If Smith and Friday and Vincent were playing as the two's.

Yeah I really hope we can get our DL back for this week. Awfully thin at DE otherwise and yes I thought we got the safety too.

My literal only bummer for this game is the 2nd team plays giving up 2 scores and 100+ yards. Loved the defense though overall.

I thought that this defense would reflect 2014. Much improved with rocky moments while developing into a great unit. Maybe it's too early to say, but after rewatching the game and film breakdown, I think they're already far ahead of early 2014. Too much elite, experienced talent with flexible pieces that can confuse an offense and adds depth. Want to see how they respond when something isn't working and they have to switch to other looks, and also how adept the new coaching staff is at making half time adjustments. That'll be the difference between a really good defense and a dominant one.

Another thought is that it was a terrible call by the refs when around the 6:40 Mark in the 3rd quarter we forced a clear safety but they said the players forward motion got him out of the end zone.

Man, I was livid about that. After OSU gave up a BS safety against Arkansas in the ‘11 Sugar Bowl the exact same way — the ball carrier was out of the end zone, driven back into the end zone, disengaged and apparently at that point establishes a new point of forward progress.

I’m so sick of obscure rules like this, roughing the long snapper, and diving over the line on FG block being applied unevenly in a way that always screws the Buckeyes.

Friday and Smith are back. Good news. Really think that the Silver Bullets are too going to come out blazing tomorrow. Just need to stop the running game. Looking for the LBs to have a big game tomorrow.
GO BUCKS!

LBs are better this year, DL roughly the same, and I like this years secondary better than 2014 too.
