2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

Yeah same here... IMO there's absolutely no hiding the fact that Okudah and Wade are our two best corners. The secondary will be very stout if we make the tough decision to give 1 and 24 the bulk of the reps.

Right. Johnson (position coach) needs an offseason with his guys — which he deserves.

Confident one of Williamson, Riep and/or Tyreke can emerge as viable starter(s). Proctor has made noise on special teams all year which we know is the path to get on the field. We will see. I was excited about the Johnson hire because of what he was able to accomplish with lower-tied recruits; but we need to ensure said talent is in a position to succeed and that’s a larger concern in the grand scheme of things given where this staff is.

Proctor has one snap against Nebraska and no other statistics for the year. You must be thinking of someone else.

My Breakdown:
DE - Young and Cooper (both playing the best ball of their careers)
Cornell and Smith as back ups
DT - Landers and Hamilton
Togai and Vincent as back ups
LB - Harrison (playing his best also), Browning (needs the light to come on. We need his speed and athleticism) Werner
Jones, Borland, Hilliard as back ups
CB - Sheffield (Solid starter) and Okudah (our best CB)
Safeties - Fuller (Veteran starter) and White (up and coming star)
Nickel - Wade (Our 2nd best DB)
Arnette, Johnson (Hope he's the answer), Pryor provide depth

Totally forgot about Hamilton...

It's all there to have a dominant defense if we can just get some kind of consistent message from our staff. If we make no personnel changed for our defensive staff then forget it maybe we can crack the top 30. However with this line up (especially with Wade/Okudah as starters) we should be top 10 considering we literally return basically everyone minus Jones.

Yeah, I forgot to mention Garrett on the inside as well. We will be strong up the middle. Hopefully with some more maturity and some adjustments with coaching, scheme or personnel, the problems will be fixed and we will see the Silver Bullets again.

I think if there is genuine interest between OU and Grinch and he were to bolt, then that'd be the only scenario I see OSU pursuing Freeman from UC. In essence IF Grinch were to leave, make a hard offer at Freeman. Make him the co-DC, with the knowledge that he'd be DC once Schiano(more than likely) left after next season(which it seems like he's coming back next year but still looking for a HC position). Fire Davis, and make Freeman the LB coach to go with co-DC. Schiano can also coach the Safeties, since that was where Grinch was, but Schiano has a background in coaching S/DBs.

If Grinch stays put, then still fire Davis, get a young LB coach that's moving up the ranks, and promote Grinch one Schiano bolts.

This is my plan in your words. Exactly what if hope for. Davis is shown the door regardless and maybe even make a run at Freeman on the DL to see if it makes sense to make it easier for Grinch to head to OU.

Apparently Arnette and Sheffield have not decided whether they will return next year. I heard rumblings during the season that Arnette thought he was good enough for the NFL. Don't shoot the messenger

I have always thought that 5th year guys had a little different decision to make.

Do you already have a degree? Can you improve any more by coming back or not? Sick of school after 4 years and ready to move on or love it and just want one more year before you have to grow up and go to work?

As far as just play on the field I don't think either DB is NFL caliber but that's just imo.

a lot of bad DB's in the league that have jobs. I think Sheff could make it. Arnette has always struggled in lock-down man coverage but been solid in run support/tackling most of his career (minus big gaf in Maryland game and I'm sure a few others I've conveniently forgotten).

As far as I know neither Arnette or Sheffield have degrees
