2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

At least 9 points the Defense has given up this season are not against the first team. Not sure of more but it would be very interesting by mid season or the end to see just how good this first team defense is.

Didn’t look at personnel on the field in the second half, but OSU has given up 15 points in the first half this season. 13 have been scored on the defense.

A field goal from FAU, a field goal from Ind, and a field goal from Miami.

The lone touchdown was the trick play against Indiana.

And with almost the same personnel that was on the field for tOSU last year, minus Bosa and Dremont (two pretty stout defenders). What happened? Shows what good coaching can do for a team. Wonder how Urban let this happen….love hearing how Okudah praises Hafley for making him such a better DB. It's still too early to tell, but Buckeye Nation's hopes are soaring every week. Keep on truckin' Buckeyes!

Last four games the D has given up:
0 points
10 points
5 points
7 points

22 points in 4 games. The last four games teams are averaging less than two field goals per game. I know it is early on and the competition is going to be at a higher level but this is pure dominance by our Defense.

I'm with you. Teams of this caliber were shredding us last year. Now they're getting absolutely shut down. The sheer dominance is fun to watch. I'm particularly enjoying seeing Browning and Okudah playing at the level we anticipated after plucking them from Texas. Browning is probably the guy that's impressed me the most, mainly because of the HUGE improvement he's shown from last year. He's showing incredible closing speed, great tackling, physicality, awareness and I've been impressed with him in coverage. He keeps this up and he might have himself a tree planted in Buckeye Grove.

Agreed on Browning. Just think that we also have another year to see him play. But it also seems like everyone has stepped it up across the board. Arnette and Okudah are both playing at a higher level. Wade..the list could go on and on. If the DL can get over the injury bug it will also only get better.

THE LINEBACKERS CAME TO PLAY IN LINCOLN
With superstars like Chase Young and Jeffrey Okudah on defense, it can be missing to forget about some of the "other guys". One group of "other guys" includes the linebackers, which was by far the most criticized position group a season ago.

The Buckeyes have returned their top four linebackers from the previous year, yet the difference in play has been absurd. With Ryan Day's staff change and a quick swap in the middle linebacker position, Ohio State's linebackers are looking better than they have in years.

The unit has been gobbling up opponents all season long by attacking the line of scrimmage and hogging all of the tackles. Against Nebraska, the linebackers had one of their best performances of the season.

This linebacker play has made a huge impact on one of Ohio State's biggest issues last year: big plays. Last season, the defense allowed 67 plays of over 20 yards and 23 plays of over 40 yards. Through five games this year, the Bucks have allowed just 13 plays of 20+ yards and only three of 40+ yards.

With Michigan State's unimpressive offense coming to Columbus on Saturday night, the linebackers should have another field day under the lights.

7 on a trick play and another 7 against the back ups too... don't sell them short now!

It is amazing what uber talented, hard working players can accomplish when they are actually put into a position to make plays. Last year it seemed like players were poorly positioned and then compounded things by taking poor angles. This year they are seemingly in the opposing OC’s head and, with the exception of a few plays, they are taking good angles of pursuit.
