2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

Not counting commits in the 2020 class, we will have at most six scholarship LBs on roster, and maybe as little as four if Werner and Borland bail (UFM seems to think both of them are quite draftable, and me thinks Borland may be encouraged to enter the transfer portal if he doesn't declare). We lose Malik Harrison, along with Justin Hilliard if he does not get a 6th year. That would leave us with two LBs with any real game action (Mitchell and Pope) as Eichenberg has yet to play a snap and Stover has appeared in three blowouts (Cincinnati, Miami, Rutgers):

Tommy Eichenberg (Fr) 6-3 225
Cade Stover (Fr) 6-4 225
Teradja Mitchell (So) 6-2 242
K'Vaughan Pope (So) 6-1 231

Pete Werner (Jr) 6-3 239
Tuf Borland (Rs-Jr) 6-1 232

Malik Harrison (Sr) 6-3 240
Justin Hilliard (5th-Sr) 6-1 235

While we have two top-11 LBs coming in along with the #41 LB (per 247), Hilliard getting his 6th year would be huge.

EDIT: As pointed out by two esteemed colleagues, my dumb ass overlooked Browning (Jr) and Gant (So). That's what happens when old fucks don't take a nap before posting.

Don't laugh, your time's coming...

OK, what happened to Baron Browning (Jr) 6-3 248?

Re: me thinks Borland may be encouraged to enter the transfer portal if he doesn't declare

Has Tuf Borland graduated or is he on track to graduate by this Spring?

I guess old farts like me can't go through the roster and eye-ball all the "LB" entries.

You really think Borland would be encouraged to transfer? I don't understand why. Browning obviously has the higher upside, but Tuf is a captain and the coaches see him as the best option at starter currently.

We've had captains who weren't starters. If the staff starts leaning towards giving the nod to Browning next season, they may politely tell him that greener pastures might be at another university as a grad transfer for his final year of eligibility. He also may turn around and accept his new role as backup for the overall good of the team, as any true captain would. Just saying I think it's a bit more than a remote possibility.
