2019 tOSU Defense (Official Thread)

Interesting seeing White being moved to LB. Wint makes perfect sense, but I don't get why Pryor wasn't moved as well. IMO, he was every bit as bad in coverage and angles last year as Wint, and his size and speed would fit better in the LB room than with the Safeties. I could see Safety starters as Fuller and (possibly) Proctor. But I see our best possible options at S alongside Fuller would be Proctor, Riep, Williamson(if he can stay healthy) and Hooker. In a pinch, Wade and Johnson can play S, but let them focus on CB. Shaw should also provide a decent competition too as a true frosh at S.

Wait... what? White is with the LBs?

Well whatever, not like the LB play was any good last year.

Plus it would get Wade on the field more which I'm a fan of.

What people aren't thinking about is what white being moved to a hybrid really means. I don't think we plan on getting another safety on the field.

Just in certain situations they are going to drop white into the box.

Maybe this means we are going to see a shift from the 4-3 to a 3-4? Maybe a Bandit and Spur type OLB package with White and Wint would make sense to me. Both those guys would be Spur type guys whereas Browning and Werner could be ILB or Bandits.

There are many reasons I’m excited about a mostly new defensive staff. One big one is a totally new set of eyes and no preconceived notions. There are a bunch of talented dudes on this roster and I’m pumped to see what kind of product the new staff puts together. It’s not like there is a huge talent gap.

Why go to 3-4 when our DL is the strength of the defense?
Because it is much better suited to match up against spread teams, hence the reason 80% of college and NFL defenses have switched to it? You see more 4-2-5 and 3-4 now than our older 4-3 scheme. You can still have a nasty Dline with a 3-4, ask Bama.

When I said Wint and White would be Spurs, that means one or the other, not both at the same time. Most colleges now use a Safety like at LB that covers in space and plays mostly on the wide side of the field and a Bandit or a mostly rush OLB that plays to the boundary most of the time and is your fourth rusher.

I feel like it is better suited to defend the spread and then you do not have to sub as much and change personnel.

What I think this is setting up for is more what we did in 2014 with DLee but slightly different.

If I had to guess I would assume that two of Proctor/Wade/Arnette come onto the field in obvious pass downs giving us a Nickle. Where as one of the LBs rotate in during running downs giving us almost like a 4-4 look.

Any rate, Whites flexibility is going to be enormous for us. When we play teams like Wisconsin we can go 4-3 and drop White in the box which gives another heavy player.

Also don't be shocked if we are implementing a 3-3-5 look like Iowa State and Texas did. More or less it drops a safety behind the MLB. In my opinion It'd be a very good thing to add for passing situations. It allows for your guys to play fast which is what they set out to do.

Should be interesting to see!
