2019 tOSU Offense (Official Thread)

His average yards per carry was better and to me it looks like Teague falls forward a ton.

We can't expect Dobbins to carry the entire bulk and I'm just saying when Dobbins needs a breather we need to get Master the ball.

You have to take his ypc with a grain of salt since it was mostly late in the game. He did look good and showed an ability to contribute. I don’t disagree there.

But, IMO, he didn’t look better than JK. For all his faults, JK is good. He just needs to work on vision and patience.

Just 1 game but I think we can agree we should try establish a 2nd back. Might as well see what Master can do as well.

It's a limited sample size of Master but I like what he brings. He's our fastest back and also looks like our strongest. When he gets moving he's tough to bring down and our offense needs that.

Got bored and watched the game again (the joys of a long weekend due to a holiday) and you have to give FAU some credit. First off the 3 man front has always been the most effective against us and FAU started lining up the 3 lineman over the center and guards which took away Dobbins. Then once we were in 2nd/3rd and long they split their line wide and brought pressure.

They did a very good job having multiple splits up front (even going 4 down a few times) and had a few very good blitz packages. With that said our vanilla play calling on 1st down allowed them to simply get us off schedule and allowed them to play aggressive.

We really could have hurt them with some outside running plays with how tight they were playing the middle. Also I'm not sure if we even attempted a pass down field once we went up 28 to 0.

We still killed 2 of our own drives as well. Olave with the drop and then Olave with the offensive PI call (Which was very flimsy).

Overall I was actually more impressed with what FAU was doing. Only adjustments I would've wanted to see would've been to run outside and more downfield shots.

Seems like Master Teague fits this current offense a little more naturally. If the offensive line isn’t opening up holes to the 2nd level, where JK excels, the Bucks need a guy that puts his head down and creates a hole. Loved Teague’s play Saturday.

A little bit of Beanie where he just goes full speed into the defense, tries to smash through for 4-5 yards and if he happens to have a lane he can go for a big gainer. JK’s jump cuts are great for extra yards against DB’s but he wasn’t getting those opportunities often. By all accounts JK’s worked his tail off. Everyone is learning now that Day has his fingerprints on the offense. Need them both.

Run blocking was poor- FAU was selling out and the offense was predictable. These are fine for game 1 but Stud is also running out of excuses.

Passing wise, Fields looked like he is supposed to. He’s QB1 for the first time in meaningful snaps in front of 100k. Slow on some reads but he’ll get comfortable. He’s got an arm and the WR’s are too talented for this not to work.

Yea something about Teague just seems different. If JK is getting dropped for 4 yds a carry again this Saturday then I'll be all for at least giving Teague some run. Maybe it's an OL issue but maybe we just need someone to smash through an arm tackle?

I was disappointed in our run game. I felt we should have been able to run the ball better against this team. I guess I have to put that on the new O line for the first game. Looking for some good improvement starting with Cinci.

Wondering your guys take on this...

I don't understand the vanilla approach to be honest. People know what we have play calling for the most part and I would think we would want the practice as a staff adjusting in game.

Do you guys think having a very plain gameplan actually helps?

Not a big fan of it either but it does provide a surprise element for better opponents like Cincy this week. It also helps the team focus on fundamentals a bit more. I fully expect Day to open things be up on Offense against Cincy. There was no wheel routes, few crossing patterns, only a couple screens. The main thing Cincy will have to now take into account is Ruckert at TE.

And we will also see some blitzes and more of a mix of man and zone on Defense. If we don't play so many backups in the 2nd half the score is more like 45 to 13.

I thought Dobbins played 2 games on Saturday, the first quarter and then the rest of the game.

In the first quarter he was decisive and hitting holes quick, which led to 62 yards.

From the second quarter on he resorted back to some of his bad habits from last year (waiting too long for things to develop or trying to make too much happen). He only had 29 yards in quarters 2-4.

Teague and Crowley averaged 2 ypc more than Dobbins behind the same OL (and even backups in some cases).

Yep. Not a good tendency because 2nd and 8 is not a consistent recipe for success.

Interesting to watch though...
