2020 Buckeye Trivia Contest - won by BN27

Fred Norton

Fred Norton is correct, and while many won’t know that name, we all should. The “Smiling Irishman” was tOSU’s first 4-sport letterman, a 4.0 student who ran the quarter-mile in track, was the captain of the basketball team, the captain and MVP of the baseball team (.442 average in 1917), and was the lead blocker for the legendary Chic Harley on the first Buckeye football team to have a perfect season, in 1916. That season included the 128-0 win over Oberlin, and the 46-7 win over Indiana in which Norton scored 6 TDs in the first half.

He was a member of the 27th ‘Eagle’ Pursuit Aero Squadron. On July 2, 1918, Norton’s guns jammed during a dogfight. Instead of flying to safety, he remained in formation to protect the other members of his squadron, according to military accounts. The brave act led to him being awarded a Distinguished Service Cross.

On July 20th, Norton was hit by German fire while attacking troops from the air during the Chateau-Thierry campaign in France. Norton was mortally wounded by two anti-aircraft rounds to the chest. He managed to land his airplane safely, but conflicting reports surround his death. He may have been taken prisoner by the Germans, who treated his wounds until abandoning him to escape the advancing American troops. It was two days before his fellow soldiers were able to transport him from the front lines to the hospital. In the meantime, the pilot contracted pneumonia and died on July 23, 1918.

He was buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in France and awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French government for his heroism. The first airfield in Columbus, near Broad and Hamilton roads on the East Side, was named for this heroic pilot who was also the first Ohio State graduate to be killed in World War I.
