2020 Team Discussion Thread

Unbelievable that coaches and our players are not being listened to. I gather it that they want to play so bad, they would probably even sign liability waivers. I know that's not exactly iron clad and the general rule is you can't waive gross negligence (which I have a hard time seeing from deciding to play if the team attempted to follow safety protocols), but shit... they are informed adults who have worked their asses off to get here. I would be lying to say I'm sad for the prospect of no season for selfish reasons as a fan, but I really feel for the players, especially guys like Justin Hilliard. As for the prospects of playing in the spring, even throwing aside players who won't be coming back, I just don't see how things are going to be any better by then. If we continue living this way as a country, we're going to hide in our houses until there's a vaccine, at which point a COVID-20 will come along and we'll do it all over again. Jesus Christ.

The bold part is important. This isn't sending Johnny Gradeschool back. Likewise, some Universities are going to have to answer for requiring dorm housing for incoming freshmen .... you know... complete strangers in extremely close quarters... even while doing on line classwork

RYAN DAY SAYS BIG TEN CANCELING SEASON NOW WOULD BE “ABRUPT,” OHIO STATE WILL “LOOK AT EVERY OPTION” IF SEASON IS CANCELED

Ohio State coach Ryan Day appeared on ESPN's College Football Live on Monday evening to make his plea to the Big Ten not to cancel the season.

During his appearance on ESPN2 on Monday, Day said he thought it would be “abrupt” to cancel the season now and that the Big Ten should postpone the start of the season if necessary in order to continue evaluating whether it will be safe to play this fall.

“We cannot cancel the season right now,” Day said. “We have to at the very least postpone it and allow us a little bit of time to keep reevaluating everything that’s going on. That’s the reason why we put this (10-game conference-only) schedule together, to have some flexibility. If we need to take a deep breath, let’s take a deep breath. But let’s do everything we can, we owe it to these kids to exhaust every single option we possibly can, and then we go from there. But doing that right now, to me right now, would be abrupt.”

Day said other coaches around the Big Ten have expressed to him that they want to play this fall, too, and that players believe they are safer at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and practicing and playing with the team than they would be without it. And he believes those players, along with their parents and coaches, should have a voice in the conversation of whether or not the season should be played.

“For them to not play football, it’s going to be a major hit for them,” Day said. “But we also know that we have to make sure it’s safe and healthy for them. That’s our job. We present it to them, and then let them make the decision with their family whether they think it’s safe enough. Whether it is or not, who knows. But I still think we need a little more time before we make this decision.”

If the Big Ten does move to cancel the season, Day said Ohio State will “need to look at every option,” potentially even including playing a season outside of the conference structure.

“If that’s the only option at the time, we need to explore it, see if that’s something that we could possibly do,” Day said. “Because if it is and that’s what’s best for our kids, then certainly we need to look at that and do it. But, you know, in the meantime, there’s a lot of other things that are going to come up along the way that we think we can keep getting better at. This virus changes every day. We’re learning about it. We're learning more about testing, testing’s getting better every day. And we’ve created a really good environment here. And I think we can keep getting it better and keep talking throughout the conference and throughout the country on how to make it better and share ideas. Because things are happening so fast, I just think a little bit of time could go a long way.”

Just sayin': I'm sure Gene Smith is working"behind the scenes" on this, which is how he should be handling it (as opposed to "in the press"); but it still would be nice to know his position on this issue.

I hope OSU graduates have enough time to transfer to schools willing to play......feel for a lot of graduated upperclassmen who had a specific plan in place.

Just think it’d be cool to get them into programs that will play so they can have access to top notch testing, workout facilities, and improve their draft stock. If Big 10 is going to close up shop, they should at least cut any red tape to allow kids to go play elsewhere.....

MONTHS OF HARD WORK WOULD MAKE NO FALL SEASON A TOUGH PILL TO SWALLOW FOR OHIO STATE FOOTBALL PLAYERS, COACHES

115668_h.jpg

Despite all the uncertainty that has surrounded the 2020 college football season for the past five months, Ohio State’s football players and coaches have continued to work toward trying to compete for a championship this fall.

When spring practices were shut down after just one week in March and players were sent home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they continued to find ways to work out on their own – Ohio State tight end Jeremy Ruckert, for example, built his own squat rack – so that they could stay in shape.

Since early June, they’ve been back in Columbus participating in workouts at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center – even though the rest of the student body is still away from campus – in an effort to be as prepared as possible to play this season. Even on Monday, as speculation increased that the Big Ten could pull the plug on fall sports, Ohio State was on the practice field preparing for a season it hopes will happen.

Amid an offseason that’s been far from normal, Ohio State coach Ryan Day said last week that he believes his team is as prepared as ever to contend for a title if it gets the opportunity to play this fall.

“I promise you our leadership has kept this team hungry, and I think we’re training right now at a championship level,” Day said.

Ohio State director of sports performance Mickey Marotti, who oversees the Buckeyes’ workouts for most of the offseason, expressed a similar sentiment in a tweet on Monday.

So, if the Big Ten pulls the plug and other conferences continue forward with their plan, would there be room for the Buckeyes? It seems unlikely that the Big 12 or ACC wouldn’t be open to the idea given how much financial and competitive value Ohio State brings to the table. That doesn’t necessarily solve the administration concern, though that appeared to soften a bit with Lettermen Row sources indicated that incoming president Kristina Johnson now currently favors postponement over cancellation. But the contractual issues with Ohio State’s grant of rights would remain, and while those could potentially be negotiated, doing so would come at the expense of the relationships with the rest of the Big Ten — a damaging blow to a league that has built itself into the most profitable in college football.

Without a doubt, it’s way more fun to envision the Buckeyes building a one-time schedule and having a fling with another conference. But the reality is they’re married to the Big Ten, and that’s not going to change.

The rest of the B1G needs to try harder.

I think someone has told Big Gene not to give his opinion for some reason. I have not seen one quote from him which is sort of interesting.

great point

The phrase “His silence is deafening” comes to mind, but that’s usually used where the silence is significant and it’s meaning is clear. In this case, his silence is quite significant, but it could mean anything, including a fair few things that are of no importance to any of us, and a fair fewer that would be of huge import if only we knew.

Find a field on the border of TSUN and The Great State of Ohio... Probably near Toledo.

Start putting down the turf, surround it with hay bails, dig post holes for the light poles and you can get those metal bleachers from any high school.

We're going to Field of Dreams this MF. If active players are banned for injury risk, thus possibly forfeiting scholarships, then we call up any former players wanting to rep tOSU and our people, scUM can do the same.

There must always be The Game.
