2020 Team Discussion Thread

One thing I hate about the CFP is how it seems to make the regular season meaningless in the eyes of some fans, to the point of just wanting to get it over with without enjoying the ride.

It's worse this year because of all the uncertainty and unbalanced schedules. I dropped a FB group because all that matters are the two games we might not even play. Maybe I'm just old?

I'm glad it wasn't just all about "the natty" when I was at OSU. We looked forward to every game and the Rose Bowl. The "NC" was just something awarded after all the games were played.

I still look forward to each and every game, whether it be against some team I know we'll curb stomp or one that will play us close until the game clock reads 0:00. I still do expect us to win the division, the CCG, and to at least make the CFP if not win it all, but I take in each and every game, because I know the season will be over all too soon and it'll be back to eight months of "off season".

  • Day said the Buckeyes are currently treating their preparation like training camp, though he acknowledged it's a challenge not to be able to practice in full pads and that players have already begun classes. “We got to kind of kick-start to get into playing shape.” In 2-3 weeks, the Buckeyes will shift into practicing like they would during a typical game weeks.
  • On the challenge of building toughness as a team when they have “We've got to be tough, we've got to be physical ... we've got to get that in short order ... once the pads go on, we're going to have to go.”
  • Day said the team's current protocols at the facility haven't changed from what it was over the summer. “We're hoping that once we get the daily tests, we're able to get a little bit more back to normal.”
  • On Wyatt Davis and Shaun Wade opting back in: “Two All-Americans, two captains, a lot of experience there. To see Buckeye Nation embrace them, that won't be forgotten around here ... To come right back, so quickly too, it just shows you how much they love their teammates, they love Ohio State.”
  • “We have to have extraordinary depth,” Day said because of the reality that anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 will be out for 21 days. “Now more than ever, we're gonna need some of the guys that maybe wouldn't have an opportunity to play.” Said they've told all 120 players, including walk-ons, they'll be needed at some point this year.
  • Day said the Buckeyes are always looking ahead to their opponents, but the next couple weeks will be about developing fundamentals and getting back into football shape.
  • Day said he and his assistant coaches have been watching NFL games and sharing ideas and thoughts in group chats from things they've seen in those games. “We actually are able to watch more football than we ever have before.”

One thing I'll be watching for nationally is if players start opting out of the remainder of the season when their teams start losing games. If Clemson loses, would Lawrence sit out the rest of the year?

If they lose one game he'll stay because they'll still get into the playoffs (provided that one loss isn't in their CCG, and even so they still would likely make it).

Yeah I agree. It's hard for me to enjoy a lot of seasons when the expectations are so high every year. Even winning needs to be in a certain style to impress the committee. I also think it's due to the run Alabama has been on. Even if you win a title, it feels like you need another 1 or 2 to have a dynasty. Even in this golden age of OSU football, that's incredibly hard to do.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but this is why I think it's essential to have an 8 team playoff. All 5 power conferences get in plus 3 open slots. It would make it a lot more fun if the conference titles meant that much more and one or 2 losses didn't 'end' the season. It's what CFB misses that NCAA BB has.

Fully agreed and this makes a ton of sense... And that's why it probably won't happen

I agree as well. I am very old school and still believe there was something good about just using polls and not having a playoff - then arguing all winter about who was really the better team. Instead we have this mini-tournament that purports to "prove" something it really doesn't. An expanded playoff just makes that worse. (We won the NC in 2002 with a team that couldn't hold a handle to the 1996 Buckeyes. We may have won the championship - but we were far from the best team.)

But I still cherish every team and every season - and every game.
