With all due respect to our defensive staff... what I think this is telling us is we are taking too long to adjust.

Game 1- Nebraska tons of success first 2 quarters but we adjusted. Played well for half the game.

Game 2- PSU shut them complete down for a half and then they adjusted in the 2nd half which we never adjusted to.

Game 3- Rutgers- curb stomped them for a half and then could not stop them at all 2nd half.

I chalk up Nebraska to being the first game. However to me if the other two games are saying anything to us it's our defensive staff when given time to come up with a game plan they're crushing it. They really are we are starting games very very strong.

Then the other team in weeks 2 and 3 figured things out at the half and we didnt adjust at all through quarters 3 and 4. The defensive staff I hope is starting to think of "what are they going to do to counter?" Because it seems we continue as is and just never adjust.

Tomorrow I really hope we see under 24 points. In today's college ball that's a big time win.
Read again fellas.

If Joel fucking Clatt can pick apart our defense you should not be making 2 million a year.

Please, nobody say “back 7” when talking defensive troubles. The LB group is our strength.

It is an issue with the secondary and the scheme in particular.

For blame I go:

80% coaching/scheme
20% players

And I probably should shift even more on scheme.

Yeah I know we don’t have 2 guys that went in the first round and a guy in Fuller that was massively undervalued.

That’s all true.

But look back at the last 5 years of recruiting.

Teams are doing better with lesser talent than our secondary has. And that’s coaching/scheme.

I think Coombs is an elite recruiter and a good/great position coach. But that doesn’t mean they guy instantly earns my respect as a DC. That’s a different animal entirely.

Put it this way, I had little to no knowledge on Hafley to give me reason to be excited when he was hired. When Hafley got the job, Coombs had a far more impressive and well known reputation among the casual fan yet after just one year on the staff everyone knew they guy was legit.

That’s the mark of an elite DC.

Edit: why is it the 2nd half let downs are ALWAYS blamed on “effort” etc and lays at the feet of the players and never is discussed as the coaches are getting schooled in the second half and don’t know how to adjust?

The main thing is when we got up 28 and they were now threat to run why did we keep the Vanilla 4-3 look the rest of the game till the last drive. They were running 4 or 5 wide the whole game. Should have gone nickle and taken one of the LBs off of the field not just keep running warner out wide like he's a CB.

Is Warner better than our 5th DB?
