Well, I guess it was always going to be tough replacing Okudah, Arnette and Fuller in the back and Young up front. And recruiting before Coombs was a huge miss for a couple years.

Then you lose two offseason criminals (Riep, Wint) and injured Cam Brown who had some playing experience and a lot of skill. And mix in Covid for a first year coach trying to install his defensive techniques, schemes and playcalling with limited games and practices. I get a lot of that.

Still...I’m seeing some of the same things that drove me nuts during the Coombs/Meyer era. A stubborness to man coverage with no disguising, poor communication and poor technique in coverage (face guarding vs getting his DBs to turn and see the play). This gameplan last night had Meyer’s fingerprints on it too as all week he was on shows talking about playing it safe and just trying to get redzone stops as the world’s greatest offense moved down the field. No thanks. That ended up being way too respectful and soft for Bama as they took advantage of every open spot. Little to no aggression all game- 1 great blitz causes a fumble, then the next got burned and it was gone for the game. They finally brought some pressure and made Jones lay down in the pocket a couple times late. I know the horses weren’t there but the gameplanning is what the coaches can control and they got embarrassed. For $1.5M budget I feel like there was someone that would have done better.

Individually I’m not sure where the blame lies on the development of Wade. He was out of position for his strengths but also didn’t seem to ever be comfortable buying into this year. Just a mess and wasted season that will cost him.

Awful gameplan in the biggest moment that didn’t put the guys in position to succeed. That’s dissapointing.

You probably give Coombs one more full year as the talent upgrades and he gets time to develop but another year like this and there has to be a hard conversation if the defense holds the team back from a title.
