2021-2022 Ohio State Men's Basketball

These are interesting reads.

As a Seton Hall alum- I did see that there's a possibility of playing you guys in a preseason MTE.

As for what to expect from Seton Hall- they should be better than they were in 2020-21.

Key losses- Bryce Aiken, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Shavar Reynolds. Mamukelashivili is the biggest loss of the three. Aiken was a grad transfer from Harvard that was a projected starter, but injuries derailed his season. Shavar Reynolds will use his grad transfer year at Monmouth.

Key additions- the Pirates have been active in getting transfers from other schools in recent years, and this year is no different. They have picked up at least 3 transfers in Jamir Harris (American), Kadary Richmond (Syracuse), and Alexis Yetna (South Florida). Kadary Richmond and Jamir Harris are guards, and Alexis Yetna is a forward. Jamir Harris' brother Jaquan (class of 2022) is a Seton Hall commit.

With Myles Cale getting a 5th year of eligibility due to the covid extension, the Pirates will be deep at guard.

Doesn’t exactly check the box to upgrade athleticism (being like Baylor this year is the dream), but think Zed Key in the post. He has a feel and I think people will be surprised, if he gets healthy again. He’ll bang around.

Plus, I can vouch he’s just a cool dude who’s been through a lot and still gives a lot. That’s his late father in his Twitter profile pic- who himself looks like a hell of a guy.

One could say that’s his late father with ‘joey’.

Mid-tier talent to me: 15-25 in country. Just my opinion. I want more if OSU is going to really WIN.

A lot of good players. Don’t see a Big Ten champ there- no clue where those previews are coming from. But that is a solid group. Holtmann can probably get them to play well but I don’t see a high ceiling. Talent needs to keep growing.

Will be pleasantly surprised if any of those guys can take a next tier/round 1 NBA leap. Liddell is best bet but you better have 2-3 dudes to make a F4/win.

Would love to see Meechie, Brown and Branham be those studs too. Gotta have high level guards/wings. We’ll see.

Depends on how the roster ends up as well as the same for other programs, but at this point I don't think it is unreasonable at all to expect this OSU team to be a top contender for the B1G. Let's see how the rosters end up before saying they are THE league favorite, but that could be reality.

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio State sophomores Zed Key and Meechie Johnson Jr. have been invited to try out for the 2021 USA Basketball U19 National Team that will compete in 2021 FIBA World Cup in Riga, Latvia July 3-11.

The USA team will be coached by Jamie Dixon of Texas Christian University, where the team training camp will be held. Practices begin June 20. The selected members of the USA U19 team will depart for Latvia June 27 with competition beginning July 3.

The U19 championship game will be held July 11.

“This is a great honor for Zed and Meechie,” Chris Holtmann, head coach of the Buckeyes, said. “I know they are excited about competing with some of the best players in the country at their age for a chance to represent our country. We are excited to follow and support them as they compete for a roster spot on this U19 team.”

“I understand immediately sometimes your fans look at points per game and say, ‘Well, we should be taking this guy or that guy.’ But you're trying to assemble a team,” Holtmann said. “While we don't know anything on a couple of our players, we do understand we have some guys that have performed well that are returning, so you're trying to put a team together.”

While moving one state over and remaining in the Big Ten as an assistant coach may not seem like that better opportunity, it did provide Johnson with something different that he had been looking for. After coaching defense during his time working for Holtmann, something he loves and appreciates, Matt Painter gave Johnson the chance to coach the offensive side of the ball for the Boilermakers.

“With Coach Holtmann, I was a defensive coordinator,” Johnson told FOX59’s JoJo Gentry. “Now, Coach Painter wants me to jump to the other side. That was really the most exciting part for me. I’m going to be able to be a well-rounded coach.”

For Johnson, leaving Holtmann and the Buckeye program was not an easy decision but one he believes will help further his career by expanding his coaching skills. And while he feels strange about being in the same conference as Ohio State and facing the Scarlet and Gray on a yearly basis, Painter, as Johnson described, is like family after previously coaching his cousins.

For Holtmann and the rest of the Buckeye staff, there are no hard feelings toward Johnson for making a decision that was best for his career, especially after Holtmann advocated for Johnson as a future head coach during the season.

“I don’t just like Terry, I love Terry Johnson, love him, (his family),” Holtmann said when speaking to the local media in late April. “We’ve been together seven years. Seven years, it’s a long time to be together and I just love him as a person. He did good work for us, both at Butler and here in our seven years together.”
