2021 Fall Camp and Other Tidbits

There are people seriously sleeping on Minny? We have a new QB, and unsettled RB depth, and multiple new OL starters, not to mention how is our back 7 going to handle so many new starters and a full offseason. Minny will certainly be a massive test

Perhaps @bukIpower is referring to the people he knows in real life.

Here on BP, as I type this there are 3 posts on the Minnie game thread, none predicting a score. Doesn’t sound like a lot of overconfidence to me.

Or perhaps it’s the lack of nail-biting posts that bothers him.

If that’s it, I’d point out that we’re more than a week away from starting the countdown. We won’t be in the mode of really discussing game 1 until August.

Whatever it is, I seriously doubt that any but the most ignorant Ohio State fans are overconfident against any early season opponent with an experienced quarterback. If we’re honest with ourselves, we’re all still hoping that Coombs proves to be a good coordinator, because we haven’t seen much evidence to that effect yet.

Will there be more discussion about Oregon as the season approaches? Probably. Oregon is a higher ranked opponent. The game against Oregon will be far and away the most watched game of week 2, whereas the game vs Minnesota won’t come close to being the ratings king of week 1. It is what it is. But you can bet that the team and any reasonably intelligent fan is very nervous about that defense facing any offense with a pulse. Especially on the road. Especially on week 1

Minnesota was a losing team last year though and historically they arent good. You add that with facing a top 10 team the week after and this has all the makings of a semi trap game.

Thankfully it's week 1 and our guys will be tired of hitting each other. That said I didn't realize this but their entire oline from 2019 when they beat Auburn is back for this year. Luckily their WRs aren't explosive like in 2019 though and their defense isn't anywhere near as good in the back end.

You just have to hope that Stroud is sharp from game 1 because this schedule is the exact opposite to start than I would've liked. The defense is going to be a major question mark early too.

I think the team is far too young and inexperienced to have this as a trap game. IMO, trap games come from overlooking a team and looking to the next week. Though I'm sure Oregon will be talked about, there's no way that a guy like CJ Stroud isn't focused on Minny, and what his 1st start could mean. Then throw in that our entire defense is a question mark, Coombs still has a lot to prove, etc etc, and Minny may be one of our most important games. In conference, I'd say that Minny is a top 3 game for the Buckeyes(along with Indiana and Ped St).

I would consider Minny a dangerous game, not a trap game.

Conference opponent, on the road, at night, with a brand new QB who has yet to complete a collegiate pass is so obviously dangerous that I don't think overlooking Minny is even possible.
Frankly I'm terrified of this first game. Weird I know... but they have the OL to compete with our DL and obviously our QB is a big question mark right now. You add that with them having a 3 years starter at QB now? Yeah it's going to be painful getting this win even though I think we do obviously.

Better be ready for the annoying read option with the slant pass for 8 yards because that's happening a ton on Sept 2nd.

If we shut down their run its over but I have liked Ibrahim since he ran hard against us 3 years ago in the shoe.

Here are the 5 biggest 'Trap games' of the 2021 B1G season

Ohio State @ Minnesota (Sept. 2)
If there’s a trap game on Ohio State’s schedule, it’s Minnesota in Week 1. The Buckeyes will be breaking in a new quarterback when they face Minnesota at TCF Bank Stadium on the opening Thursday night of the season.

Minnesota has the talent to grind clock and PJ Fleck will have the Gophers ready to go for this game. Ohio State likely won’t be vulnerable to this kind of game later in the season after establishing new starters for players like Justin Fields, Wyatt Davis, Pete Werner and Shaun Wade. But early on in the year? It’s at least possible someone could take down the Buckeyes.

Agree Minnie sets up as a trap game. But I think we have a secret anti-trap vaccine. Depth.

You get caught in a trap when you are looking ahead. These kids take a day off and they will find themselves on the bench.

I guarantee that the 2014 team took VT seriously. They just weren't ready, yet, to be punched in the mouth like that.

I think the rest of the talent and depth difference between OSU and Minny makes this game a pretty solid bet for OSU BUT the QB position is so critical and ours will be so inexperienced that it has to give you pause.

A brand new QB makes a mistake or two, meaning turnovers, and you are in a dogfight. If they can't be a consistent pass threat then you are playing one handed and the huge talent/depth advantage OSU has is largely negated.

Odds are still in OSU's favor but the danger of a 1st start freshman QB being taken advantage of by an experienced, but less talented, group on the other side is very real imo.

It will be competitive. The Gophs will make a game of it, but it's not a trap and it isn't dangerous unless we don't take it seriously and I don't think there's any chance of that.

It may be that you two think that you disagree, but unless I'm misunderstanding you, I agree with both of you.

That "unless" in Rugby's post is something that can mean a little or a lot. Whether you guys actually disagree depends on how much meaning you put into that "unless".

Ohio State has recruited better at pretty much every position on the field. They have better athletes all the way across the board. Both have experienced offensive lines, but Ohio State's line has a very good chance of being the best OL in college football this year.

Before anyone suggests that Minne's OL might be as good as Ohio State's, ask yourself if you think they're as good as Alabama's line. Then ask yourself if Ohio State's line might be better than Alabama's this year. One of those is a discussion you can have, the other isn't.

As for the other side of the trenches; as long as Haskell Garrett is healthy, that's not a discussion either.

I think that mistakes by Ohio State's new QB could make the game interesting, but I think the TO margin has to be -3 or worse for Ohio State to lose unless the Buckeyes take this one lightly. I don't see that happening, but I didn't expect certain things in 1969, 1974, 1998, 2015, etc either.

Agree, entirely, DBB. Another thought is that many of us are focusing a lot of offseason bandwidth on a topic that really isn't all that material. We don't need elite QB play to beat even a veteran Minnesota team on the road at night. If we do, we have much bigger problems and I've completely misjudged things. Any of the three we have should be able to go out and win this one. Let the horses on the lines and in the backfield do the heavy pulling, complete some easy passes, come home and get ready for Oregon.
