Multiple Buckeyes getting first-round draft buzz

Quarterback Justin Fields, who set records at Ohio State and led the Buckeyes to two Big Ten titles and two College Football Playoff appearances, is projected to be selected with the No. 4 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the latest mock draft by The Draft Network’s Jordan Reid. If selected by the Falcons, Fields could be the heir apparent after Atlanta starting quarterback Matt Ryan, who is 35 years old.

Former Buckeyes All-American guard Wyatt Davis is also projected to be a first-round pick. Reid projects Davis to be selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the No. 27 overall pick. Davis could bolster the interior of the Ravens offensive line and reunite himself with former Buckeyes running back J.K. Dobbins.

2021 NFL Draft: Pro Day schedule

The NFL announced in mid-January that the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league’s premier annual scouting event had taken place each year since 1987 as team executives, coaches and scouts convened in Indianapolis to evaluate top draft prospects.

As a result of the cancellation, players will have to wait until their respective college Pro Days to go through athletic testing and individual drills in front of the league’s talent evaluators.

“Consistent with medical and public health advice, the 2021 Combine will be conducted in a different format,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a league memo. “There will be no in-person workouts at the Combine. Instead, any workouts will take place on the individual pro days on college campuses. We will work with the schools to encourage consistency in testing and drills across pro days and ensure that all clubs have access to video from those workouts, irrespective of whether the club is represented at a particular workout.”

All 14 of those Buckeyes – along with other NFL draft-eligible Buckeyes like wide receiver C.J. Saunders and tight end Jake Hausmann who plan to participate – will have the opportunity to work out for NFL scouts at Ohio State's pro day on March 30.

Much like the 2020 NFL season was, the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine will have a different format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than joining scouts and NFL coaches in Indianapolis, invited players will be participating in combine drills on the grounds of their school’s campus. And now, we know who those players will be.

On Wednesday afternoon, a list of 323 draft prospects invited to the 2021 NFL Combine was released to the public. The combine will be held on various days, depending on when the team’s Pro Days are held.

PRESSER BULLETS: JUSTIN FIELDS, WYATT DAVIS, RYAN DAY AND MORE TALK ABOUT OHIO STATE'S PRO DAY

See everybody's comments including Ryan Day's:

RYAN DAY
  • On pro day: "It's a unique setting." Early on, he says, there's always that "awkward quietness."
  • About Fields' performance: "Anybody who was here got to see it live and in color just how talented he is."
  • On if he has talked to teams about criticisms about Fields' progressions: "I haven't heard that from any of the NFL personnel." He says it'll be interesting to see actually where Fields goes in the draft because the teams' opinions are the only ones that ultimately matter.
  • Day on Fields' deep throw to C.J. Saunders while rolling to his left: "As a former quarterback, I probably would have broken my hip throwing that."
  • He says Fields is the most accurate down-the-field thrower he has seen.
  • On Meyer being back in the building: "It was fun to see him here."
  • Day says the ability for Baron Browning and Cooper to do different things will make them more valuable to NFL teams.
  • He says he got a lot of positive feedback from NFL people about the performance on the field.
  • Day says it's a "huge plus" for NFL teams that Sermon doesn't have much mileage. "He's young in terms of the amount of carries we had."
