2021 Spring Practices, Game, and Tidbits

Some very abbreviated notes on the Spring Game....

1. C.J. Stroud is the presumed starter at QB, but he lacked the "it" factor; however, with the QB run being essentially nonexistent due to the format of the game, Stroud was limited in what he could show. Kyle McCord looked the best of the three, but does Ryan Day really want to start a true freshman? Jack Miller looks like a career backup, at least at Ohio State. The Buckeyes' walk-on QBs (Jagger LaRoe and J.P. Andrade) could start at MAC schools.

2. Captain Obvious Alert: Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave looked like NFL wide receivers.

3. Marvin Harrison Jr. is the Next Big Thing. Or maybe it's Emeka Egbuka. Both guys will see significant time this year, and will pass some older players on the depth chart.

4. TreVeyon Henderson is so smooth - speed, vision, cutting ability, surprising power, and excellent hands; he's your starting RB before the end of 2021. Marcus Crowley also looked good, especially as a receiver. With a freshman QB starting in 2021, it will be important for Ohio State to have an RB who can act as a "safety valve" in the passing game (it was no coincidence that there were so many throws to the RBs today).

5. No comments on the OL because it was such a patchwork job, other than to say that Paris Johnson Jr. mauled some people.

6. Also, I can't say much about the defense because there was no tackling. However, I will make a bold prediction: Jack Sawyer will not start as a true freshman because other guys have "earned" that right, but he will lead the team in sacks. Over/under: 8.5 sacks. He's your next three-and-done All American top-5 draft pick.
Good points and agreed on the whole... only very slight disagreement is I thought CJ looked the best of the 3 and IMO only way we see the "it" factor is when they become live like you point out. I thought CJ threw the more difficult throws with some tight window throws for example.

I agree though that Kyle was right there with CJ and Jack Miller looked clearly behind those two.

Between the first and second quarters, seven members of Ohio State's 2020 Big Ten championship team – Justin Fields, Jonathon Cooper, Justin Hilliard, Shaun Wade, Baron Browning, Luke Farrell and Jake Hausmann – received their championship rings during an on-field ceremony.

4th and 5th string guys making plays on the last drive.

original

There were several names that I had never heard of before.

1. Overall I thought Stroud looked a little better than McCord today. Stroud hit the field running and McCord might have been a little nervous and fumbled on his first drive. Miller comes in third. CJ Stroud (11-15, 127 yds, 2 TD), Kyle McCord (9-13, 130 yds, 1 TD), and then Jack Miller (12-23, 100 yds, 1 INT).

2. This season it is Olave/Wilson as the 1-2 punch at WR. But in a year or 2 it will be Egbuka/Harrison, those 2 guys are the "real deal".

3. He was out of bounds, but Stover made a great one handed catch. I'll go out on a limb here and say will be very good at TE.

4. Seibert needs to work on his field goal kicking.

5. It may not be in 2021 due to the depth at DE, but Sawyer is a future "sack machine" at DE.

Rewatching the game and listened to a bit of the Letterman row post game stuff... this team is really really exciting to think about.

Couple more things...

1. Wow is McCord good for a true freshman. He had a sideline throw where he lead Chambers perfect and it went for like a 20 yard gain which caught my attention. 1 of his 4 incomplete passes was that almost 1 handed grab by Stover too. Also to note that CJ had a few throw aways of his 5 or so incompletions.

2. I don't recall true freshman as physically imposing as Sawyer or Harrison. Harrison looks like a different guy than a year ago and you can tell he worked really hard in the off season.

3. The defense is going to be much better than they showed today. They'll get Johnson and Hancock in the Fall, probably will get the kid from Tennessee and have good odds of landing JTT. The DL is already elite and if we can sure up LB we can be a very good defense. Adding JTT though takes this DL to a true force though with the amount of depth we would have of actual impact players.

College football spring games, takeaways: Alabama, Ohio State look just fine with new quarterbacks

Ohio State's QB situation is a luxury, not a concern

It's never easy to replace a legend, but Ohio State quarterbacks C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller and Kyle McCord all looked solid on Saturday, with Stroud looking like the front-runner to replace Justin Fields. Stroud went 16 of 22 for 185 yards and two touchdowns working primarily with the first-team offense. Star wide receiver Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson seemed to take a back seat to some younger, less-experienced players, including highly touted prospect Marvin Harrison Jr. Stroud will likely enter the fall atop the depth chart, but the other two will apply plenty of pressure. Miller went 17 of 30 with a pick, while McCord completed 12 of his 17 passes for 184 yards and two scores. All three looked in command of the offense and seemed to have the trust of coach Ryan Day.

CJ owned today, IMO. Ball looks different off his arm and he seems to make good reads. I didn’t think it liked close to be honest.
I agree 100% the way CJ makes those long sideline throws like Fields use to and obviously the Olave comeback was awesome too.

The most impressive throw of CJs was in the second half he threw a pass I think caught by Egbuka between three people that I thought really showed his separation between the others.

Our offense the next 2 years is going to be nasty.
