I was hoping the defense could progress to the point of giving us a punchers chance to win if the offense scored 40+ in any given game.

The change from Coombs to Barnes is more than anyone could have ever imagined.

The other issue early on was the DL and the freshmen are coming along better than anyone could have dared hope.

Mix in a possible Harrison bloom sighting and this could get fun. Better offenses await but no one has a talent advantage on OSU. Especially in the B1G.

The one small concern I have regarding the defensive play calling is that the opponents have not really had a chance to get a read on Barnes’s tendencies. The longer the season goes on, the more film there is available and the more important it will be for Barnes to mix things up to keep the opponents guessing.

The mix in coverages and looks Barnes calls forces QBs to hang onto the ball. That extra time has been huge for getting to the QB.

Agreed and it'll be on Barnes to adjust.

I’m picturing Alabama already having a separate GA and/or former coach each analyzing film for a different potential postseason opponent like Georgia, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, and Ohio State.

I’m hoping tOSU will soon have somebody doing those things, as well as self-scouting things like what route trees are being run out of what formations each percentage of the time. Plan to switch a tendency to a double-move to burn somebody jumping a route. Stuff like that will help slow down opposing offenses and prevent potential turnovers late in the season.

Isn't that why we have Rhodes? Figured he was doing the same thing for us

The 3rd down conversions are a thing and at this point likely won't get fixed but damn...

123rd in the nation for the raw number of 3rd downs per game at 15.8 although I'm not so sure that's a bad thing

What is definitely a bad thing(s)
  • T119th in the country with allowing 7 3rd down conversions per game. Oregon State is the worst at 8.4.
  • 105th in the nation with a 44.44% conversion allowed rate. Last years defense gave up 37.5%
All the other defensive metrics are pretty good but getting off the field on third down (or lack thereof) is much more critical than yards per play or anything like that.

Sacks, TFL's and turnovers are covering up the nowhere near good enough 3rd down defense imo.

Yep.

Penn States yards per play was 4.8, which would actually be around a top 20 defensive performance.

But they also converted 11 of 16 first downs...

I'd want to see one of the X & O gurus chart the games but to the naked eye it seems like it still goes back to the lack of pass rush from the front four.

Defense clearly forces a lot of 3rd downs but, it seems like, when they just rush 4 and drop 7, the QB has time and the QB finds someone open on an alarmingly consistent basis. Once OSU starts blitzing then it gets better.

Not sure but it feels like that's a big part of it. Another big part logically, then has to be that they still struggle in zone because they've gone to a lot of 2 high safety and it's working very well...except on 3rd down.

Yeah I think it's a two-parter of not getting pressure consistently with 4 and struggling in zone. Having to blitz more makes the issues in zone that much worse.

Was also concerned that they were having so much success on those outside screens. Not sure of the best way to stop those.

One positive is that the blitzes up the middle are creating a lot of pressure, but on times they don't or holding isn't called it's an easy conversion. Hoping that the DL can find something that let's the defense play more man and not have to rely on blitzing constantly. But it's good that they willing to and getting that experience .
