Coombs impressed with Buckeyes' true freshmen corners | Also speaks about Barnes' promotion, Cam Brown, more

Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs met with the media after Friday's practice and shared a lot of interesting details about the Buckeyes' cornerbacks and the defense as a whole. You can watch our 14-minute video of Coombs' question-and-answer session here:

Ohio State's 2020 defense might not have been historically bad, but their performance was certainly far below both our expectations and the level necessary to win a championship. While the depleted secondary deservedly gets a lot of the blame, the defensive line must also be held accountable.

We have been spoiled in recent years with three generational talents in less than a decade (Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Chase Young), but several other defensive linemen had superb college careers while at Ohio State - Sam Hubbard, Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, Adolphus Washington, Tyquan Lewis, Michael Bennett, Dre'mont Jones, even Noah Spence.

In the chart below, I list all of the defensive linemen who played during the Meyer-Day Era (even if their careers began during the Tressel-Fickell Era). The chart contains the following stats: tackles; TFLs; sacks; QBHs; PBUs; turnovers; total defense. Players with 12 or more games played are listed in the main chart; players with less than 12 games played are in a separate chart below. Current players are listed in scarlet (Cade Stover is listed with the current DL even though he will play TE for the 2021 season).

In conventional scoring, a sack counts as a sack, a TFL, and a tackle. To prevent this duplication, I have defined a "tackle" to be a tackle that is not also a TFL and/or a sack; and a "TFL" to be a TFL that is not also a sack. So if a player in conventional scoring has 16 tackles, 6.5 TFLs, and 3.0 sacks, in my system he has 9.5 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, and 3.0 sacks.

The "total defense" stat is similar to total offense, and is the total of yards lost as the result of TFLs and sacks, plus yards gained as the result of fumble recoveries and interception returns; I have also given a 10-yard bonus for a TD scored off of a fumble or interception. So a player with 25 yards lost on TFLs + 15 yards lost on sacks + 12 yards gained on fumble returns + 33 yards gained on interception returns with a pick six would have a total defense score of 95.

Finally, the "DL score" was calculated by giving 1 point for each tackle and QBH; 2 points for each TFL and PBU; 3 points for each sack and turnover (with a turnover being defined as a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, an interception, or a blocked punt/kick); and .1 point for each yard of total defense.

NOTE: I have included a "hypothetical" Nick Bosa, who doesn't get hurt after 2.5 games and plays his entire season season. For Nick's senior year stats, I used his actual stats for 2.5 games, plus Chase Young's actual stats for his 12-game 2019 season.

The current DL are bunched toward the bottom of the performance chart, which is to be expected because they have played less games. However, when each player's stats are averaged to a 40-game career, the current DL are still near the bottom in terms of performance.

Zach Harrison has clearly separated himself from the current pack, but even still he is only performing at the level of Jalyn Holmes or Jonathon Cooper, which is not really what you'd expect from a 5-star prospect and supposed generational talent. The rest of the group, including the highly-touted Tyreke Smith, are performing in the same range as Jamal Marcus, Tommy Schutt, and Michael Hill, guys who were pretty much back-ups during their forgettable careers.

I understand that raw stats don't tell the entire story (see Haskell Garrett, All American), but the DL really do need to step it up in 2021 in order for the defense to be capable of competing with teams like Oklahoma, Georgia, Clemson, or Alabama in the playoffs.

Great breakdown. I'm pretty high on the DL due to Smith playing up against Clemson (I know they don't have a great OL, but still), Garrett being an anchor, and Harrison playing better than I thought last year and having the upside. All this plus COVID hampering a lot of development has me thinking that the jumps we didn't see happened over the last 8 months. But they need to show it on the field.
