I think the heavy use of the 2 TE set(s) this year were because we had two solid and complementary TEs. I'm hoping for good things from Stover and we may well see him in with JR in some short yardage/goal line plays, but I don't see Day and Wilson going out of their way to push 2 TEs.

The tapes don't tell the whole story of the 3. McCord had a more talented team than the other 2. McCord I believe won state and his team is PA power, Stroud was at Rancho Cucamonga, which isn't exactly known much for football, and he singlehandedly took them to the playoffs on his arm and legs. Miller had talent, but had a terrible OL and was a main reason why he was always injured. I think the QB who can master the offense, make the least mistakes and show clear leadership becomes the starter.
Least mistakes is key IMO... if we all think back to 2019 JF didn't have the 300-400 yard passing games every week. In fact 10 of his 14 games from 2019 were under 240 yards passing with a few below 200. However what JF did was protect the ball with only 1 INT all regular season. We have the OL, we have the backs, and we have the explosiveness at WR to not have to force the issue.

As you said the QB who's most accurate and definitely who makes the least mistakes should win the job.

The only thing you hope is that the defense doesnt force our young QB to have to air it out 40 times.

Maybe the wrong thread for this but I'm very concerned with the first two games for our defense and how they will fair which may force the QB to throw to stay ahead. Minnesota is going to have a very good offense with a veteran QB, a veteran RB, two pretty good WRs and they'll have a very good OL. There will be absolutely no ability to start slow unless our defense is drastically improved game 1.

The key players on Offense have sorted themselves out in terms of who is staying or leaving.

Curious as to the status of the other seniors on O including Hoak, Hausmann, Cupp, Harris and even McCall.

Since the schollie limit is not an issue no reason not to let them hang around other than cost. And if the QB battle in the spring should result in a transfer we may still need Hoak.

Should be this years version of the last two years best Offenses; Bama and LSU. We weren't far behind them so I don't see us being much different. Experience everywhere but QB but there's a lot of talent in that room too. I'm more worried about kicking and the rare times we might have to punt

Out of that bunch, I'd personally only want Hausmann back to help with depth in the TE room, and have another TE who has seen PT and give Royer, Stover and Hart time to develop. The other guys I can take or leave, but I'd rather move on and allow younger guys time to develop at their positions. I definitely am ready to move on from McCall, immature and fits no where on the team(we have better RBs, WRs and return men, IMO)

Keep thinking of the unreal WR depth and the new RBs coming in and Bowling ball getting more time to develop....

This offense could actually be better next year.

I said “could” before anyone jumps my case. Yes losing a guy like Fields is enormous but we are seeing young QBs be much better than the old days. If Stroud is legit.....look out.

Yes we lose Sermon but as a group the RB room is absolutely better and it could be a noticeable improvement if, for no other reason but Master will be farther into his recovery. Borland looked MUCH better this year once he had more time to heal.

So if Teague is better and you have guys like Henderson come in and tear it up plus all the current RBs getting healthy and spring ball to develop that RB room goes from weakness to a strength at a quick pace IMO.

The dropoff at QB will be interesting. Fields is a physical marvel who took multiple game/year ending hits and was still launching bombs. I can't ever expect another QB to do that, but if they are able to make quicker reads, move in the pocket better, and have a quicker release (things Fields was arguably average at), the passing game will be more consistent and could look better.

Also, while Olave and Wilson were amazing, there wasn't much depth in the WR room due to limited practice and game reps. More time will lead to a bigger rotation next year and IMO a much more dynamic WR corps.

So yeah, this could definitely be one of those years in which everyone is kinda shocked by how well the passing game turns out after losing Fields. I don't know a ton about Stroud, but the conversation around him has led me to believe he is a perfect fit the athletic distributor role that Day is looking for.

It’s not just the passing game.

I expect a much more potent rushing attack. Granted that 2 game run by Sermon was unreal but it was just so flat early on. Plus, as we saw in the Natty the run game was hurt dramatically when he went out. I don’t see the run game being so dependent on one guy next year and so inconsistent throughout the year.

I expect the OL to be solid again and I expect the run game to be very explosive.

Yep... 3 returning OL starters and plugging in one of the best OL talents in the past few years to solidify the middle? Not to mention Jones played a lot down the stretch and even started a few games.

Better all around WRs, better TE, and a better pass protecting OL. The QB whoever it is will set up better than any first year starter we've ever had.

I preface this by saying (which goes without saying) that I've done absolutely no research and have no way of quantifying this. I feel like the offense was better Justin's first year in the sense that we reverted a little to Braxton-itis in 2020 where we all watched and waited for Justin to save the day one way or another. I'm inclined to think that one of the new QBs with the talent around him should be able to run things efficiently/effectively.

PERFECT SITUATION FOR A NEW QUARTERBACK
It doesn’t matter who suits up at quarterback. It could be C.J. Stroud. It could be Jack Miller. It could be Kyle McCord. Whoever wins the job, he’ll have thrown the same number of passes at the collegiate level as you and me (unless we’ve got a college signal-caller or two out there reading out in the ether).

So, what does a first-time starter and underclassmen at quarterback need around him to succeed? Talented veterans he can rely on.

How about two potential All-American candidates at wide receiver (Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson), a stud at tight end (Jeremy Ruckert), a fourth-year starting left tackle (Thayer Munford), several other bule-chippers on the offensive line (Paris Johnson, Matthew Jones, Harry Miller and Dawand Jones), a solid crop of running backs and Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson calling the offense? Does that work? It should.

A perfect scenario would probably include a star tailback beside the soon-to-be first-year-starting quarterback, but this is the next best option. The ceiling of Ohio State’s offense could be determined by the play of Stroud, Miller and McCord, but they’re working with a pretty nice floor.

A TALENT-LADEN ROSTER, BUT HOW GOOD IS THE QUARTERBACK?
Ohio State, once again, is littered with one-time four-star and five-star recruits. It’ll feature one of the most impressive rosters in the country again.

But as so often happens, it all comes back to the quarterback.

If Stroud, Miller or McCord falters, this team might not achieve its goals. If one of them turns out to be an impact player, the Buckeyes are absolutely a College Football Playoff contender who could find themselves back in the national championship game. Sometimes, it’s that simple.

Ohio State’s biggest question mark – the level of play from the starting quarterback – is also the most important factor in determining this team’s ceiling.

Just sayin': The quarterback is the most important position on any team sport. The 2021 season will go as the quarterback goes.

Whoever wins the job will again inherit a national-championship caliber roster.

“Those guys are going to roll [spring reps],” Day said. “And they’re going to get as many reps as they can. If one guy starts to separate himself early on, then he goes and runs with it. I look at the spring and the preseason as a continuation of each other. If we had 15 practices in spring, the first practice of the preseason is really practice No. 16. Usually in these situations, it takes care of itself. Somebody steps up and if they don’t, we keep rolling from there.

“The exciting thing is as these guys compete, if you can get a quarterback who can really grow and learn, then you have somebody who’s going to be in the program for a while. That’s important where it’s been hard for us because the last two quarterbacks we’ve had here, they’ve after three years, they’ve moved on to the NFL.”

There in the comment section among the 100-plus fans, dozens of Buckeyes players – past and present – backed him up.

“Go time,” wrote Justin Fields. Taron Vincent called him “QB1,” and Jeff Okudah deemed him “Next up.” Teradja Mitchell said, “In CJ we trust,” and Jaxon Smith-Njigba wrote, “Here we go.” Zach Harrison used the phrase “7 era,” referencing Stroud’s number. Baron Browning, Dwayne Haskins, Chris Olave, Jameson Williams, Trey Sermon, Lathan Ransom, Miyan Williams, Zach Harrison, Paris Johnson, Dallas Gant, Garrett Wilson, Ryan Watts and a slew of others joined in the chorus.

To put it simply: His teammates – and Fields – are treating him like he’s next in line to start. But is he?

Day won’t name a leader this early. When posed the question of whether or not Stroud pulled ahead of Jack Miller during their freshman season, he acted as though they remain neck-and-neck.

“I don't think that either of them are further along than the other, and I think we'll get a better feel for that in the spring,” Day said on Friday. “We'll see. There's still a lot to be worked through as we get into next September.”

Just sayin': Competition makes everyone better and you want to give all three a fair shot at competing for the job. In addition, not revealing your starting QB makes the opponent have to prepare for any possible outcome. A coaching decision might be make a little earlier, but it wouldn't surprise me if the QB1 isn't officially announced until September 2, 2021.
