OHIO STATE DEFENSIVE PROBLEMS FIXED?
11004863.jpg

Put aside the offensive juggernaut Ohio State creates every single season, it’s the defense that has questions going into 2022. The Buckeyes failed to repeat as Big Ten champions, losing to Michigan in the final game of last season and missed out on the title game. New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles came in during the offseason, following a Buckeyes Rose Bowl victory. Knowles had the promise of fixing some leaks on the defensive end of things, including the pass rush. If it’s done right, Ohio State is one of the big favorites to make the playoff and contend for a national title again.

“One of the things that I see, first off in the meetings, Jim is up in front of the group and there’s a whole lot of interaction within the group,” head coach Ryan Day said. “The teaching has been really good, and it’s all tied in. All three levels. That’s what we’re seeing on the field as well.”

Ohio State fans aren't asking for much in 2022.

The Buckeyes should be favored in every game on the schedule, but no one is demanding a 15-0 record. It's like asking Santa for everything. That never works. See, we're strategic.

We would just like an okay defense this season. Maybe slightly more. The okayest defense.

Just sayin': I'm asking for a National Championship!!!

“I think J.T. and Jack both have had very good offseasons. They’ve gotten stronger, they’ve gotten faster, technique’s been better – and you saw that today,” Day said in his postgame press conference. “If they continue to build this summer, then they’re gonna be a force in the fall. I think that they’ve really taken to (Larry) Johnson and his system, too. Jim (Knowles) has a great way of kind of changing up the looks too to kind of keep the offensive guessing, and then the minute you think they’re moving, they come at you with a bull rush. So that combination of really good technique with Coach Johnson, the style and scheme that Coach Knowles has put together really fits those guys and a lot of guys on defense. There’s a bunch of guys today that showed up, but those guys have been strong.”

Ohio State ranked 96th in the country against the pass a season ago, giving up an average of 245.8 yards per game through the air, but cornerback play wasn’t necessarily the reason why. Denzel Burke emerged as a star at the position as just a true freshman, starting every game for the Buckeyes, and Cameron Brown showed flashes of great play at times despite battling through injuries all year.

Both of those players return in 2022, and even after the transfers of Sevyn Banks and Lejond Cavazos, Ohio State’s depth at the position looks solid with second-year corners Jordan Hancock and Jakailin Johnson stepping up and freshmen Jyaire Brown and Ryan Turner also holding their own in the spring game.

Burke and Hancock stood out in particular among the players in Tim Walton’s position room on Saturday, as both broke up two passes to account for nearly half of Ohio State’s 10 PBUs on the day.

"You want to present a picture that [the quarterback] doesn’t necessarily know what’s coming, and then do some different things out of that picture," Knowles added in the interview last summer. "Make him read post-snap, don’t just let him line up and know where he’s going with the ball."

I dont have to know anything else about the man to know he's an improvement over what we've been doing.

Damn... it's almost like the exact same concept as "constraints" from an offensive formation / favorite play.

I’m genuinely curious if the vanilla defense in Spring Game is bc it isn’t fully installed, or if we are keeping our hand close to vest prior to season….

I kinda think we just don’t wanna put ANYTHING on tape at all….

With ND being 1st opponent, I say let everyone think we're still garbage.

God willing it also preps the Offense better.
