2022 tOSU Special Teams

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.

Lewis was immediately intrigued by the possibility of playing for Ohio State once he heard from the Buckeyes, in part because of his relationship with Bolden but also because of his friendship with former Ohio State kicker Blake Haubeil, who he says is “like an older brother.” Lewis has known Haubeil since he was in seventh grade, and he watched the Buckeyes often during Haubeil’s Ohio State career, even attending Ohio State’s Fiesta Bowl game against Clemson in 2019 to support Haubeil.

“Before I was committed to USC, Ohio State was my team that I rooted for because I was watching all of Blake’s games,” Lewis said.

Based on his conversations with Haubeil and Ohio State special teams coordinator Parker Fleming, Lewis believes playing for Ohio State would be a much better fit for him than USC was.

“Coach Fleming is more of like a family feel,” Lewis said. “They have it down pat for sure at Ohio State. I love their system and how they operate and manage their specialists.”

Lewis was also a teammate of current Ohio State cornerback Denzel Burke at Saguaro High School (Scottsdale, Arizona), and he likes what he’s heard from Burke about the Buckeyes, too.

“I’ve talked to him a lot on Ohio State, and one thing I like that he said is he said it's ran just like Saguaro. If Saguaro were to be a college, he said it's ran just like Saguaro,” Lewis said. “He’s said a lot of really, really, really great things.”

Lewis, who was ranked as the No. 7 kicker in the 2020 recruiting class and still has three years of collegiate eligibility, expects to select his transfer destination within the next two to three weeks, as he plans to enroll at his new college in May.

Just sayin': Kind of surprised we are recruiting a place kicker with Noah Rucker returning and Jake Seibert still on the roster; however, maybe Day isn't 100% sold on Seibert for 2023 & 2024.

PISCATAWAY, NJ - OCTOBER 02: Ohio State Buckeyes place kicker Noah Ruggles (95) warms up prior to the college football game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and Rutgers Scarlet Knights on October 2,2021 at SHI Stadium in Piscataway NJ.

If Ohio State is ever in a close game and needs a big kick to close it out, you might as well chalk it up to being over. Noah Ruggles, who returns for his final season with the Buckeyes, was the second-most accurate kicker in college football last year. Ruggles went 20-of-21 (95.2%) last year on his field goal attempts. Consistency is key for kickers and Ruggles has that.

“He's an older guy, he's mature, he can take care of himself,” Fleming said Friday. “And that's something he was doing the entire time he wasn't with us.”

While Ruggles was not enrolled at Ohio State for the spring semester, Fleming and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day both said Friday that the sixth-year senior kicker will be back with the Buckeyes this summer.

Neither of them wanted to speak for Ruggles about why he wasn’t on campus this spring, as Day simply said Ruggles “needed a little time away.” Fleming said the reason for Ruggles’ absence was “nothing bad,” though, and that it was a decision Ruggles cleared with Day and Fleming ahead of time.

“It was something I hadn't experienced in the past before, but really, it was kind of a personal thing. It wasn't a big deal,” Fleming said. “It was just kind of a situation Noah and the head coach and I had a conversation and that's the direction that we went.”

Fleming said he was in regular contact with Ruggles throughout the spring, but he wasn’t giving Ruggles specific instructions of what to do while he was away from campus. Rather, Fleming just wanted to make sure Ruggles knew Fleming and the rest of Ohio State’s coaching staff was there for him if he needed anything.

Arnold, who has handled all of Ohio State’s long snaps since Robinson was injured in the third quarter of the Iowa game and even had a tackle against Penn State, is likely to remain Ohio State’s long snapper for the rest of the year, as Day indicated Thursday that Robinson is unlikely to return this season. Day didn’t fully commit to Arnold starting the rest of the season, though, saying that fellow redshirt freshman walk-on Max Lomonico will also travel with the team this week for the second week in a row.

“Expectation is for him to be the long snapper,” Day said of Arnold. “Max Lomonico will also travel this week, and we'll see how both of those guys do. But the expectation is for those guys to be the long snappers this year for the rest of the way.”

RYAN DAY “VERY UPSET” ABOUT BLOCKED EXTRA POINT

After scoring a touchdown on its opening possession of the fourth quarter against Maryland on Saturday, Ohio State initially planned to go for two. The Buckeyes ended up giving up two points to their opponent instead.

Following a touchdown and two-point conversion by the Terrapins on their previous possession, Ohio State took a 12-point lead when Dallan Hayden finished off the Buckeyes’ ensuing drive with a 13-yard touchdown run. The Buckeyes initially kept their offense on the field to attempt to bring their lead back to 14 points, but sent their extra point team into the game instead after a delay of game penalty.

What should have been a routine play to give Ohio State a 13-point lead ended up cutting the Buckeyes’ lead to just 10 points, however, when Noah Ruggles’ kick was blocked by Deonte Banks and returned all the way to the other end zone on an 80-yard scoop-and-score by fellow Maryland cornerback Jakorian Bennett.

Day said after the game that the block happened because Ohio State was supposed to have another tackle on the right side of the line but did not, resulting in Banks going unblocked to the ball.

“That right there was a mistake that we can't let happen,” Ryan Day said after the game. “In that situation, we want the tackle to come over, we didn't put the tackle over so we had a short edge, and that block cost us three points. So I was very upset after that. And when those things start happening, all of a sudden, it could turn into a bad situation fast, and it almost did. But I give our guys credit. They kept fighting and they refused to lose.”

The Delay of Game was part of the problem. The ball was on the left hash, the team’s choice, for the 2-point conversion. It stayed on the left hash after they moved it back 5 yards, and that made the XP be at an angle, rather than straight ahead, which changes the alignment.
